The Power of Gratitude in Enhancing Elderly Health

April 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

Gratitude is more than just saying thank you; it’s a mindset that can significantly impact overall health and well-being, especially in the elderly. For residents at assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, cultivating a practice of gratitude can lead to numerous physical, psychological, and social benefits.

Physical Benefits of Gratitude

Practicing gratitude has been linked to better physical health in seniors. Those who engage in gratitude practices often experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier than others. Gratitude can lead to better sleep quality and duration, which is crucial for physical health. Seniors in communities like senior living Phoenix who keep gratitude journals or regularly reflect on things they are grateful for tend to stick to their medical treatments better and engage more in preventative health activities, such as exercising and healthy eating.

Psychological Benefits of Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful tool for enhancing mental health. It reduces a variety of toxic emotions, from envy and resentment to frustration and regret. Studies have shown that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression, which can be particularly beneficial in settings like memory care Phoenix. By focusing on the positive aspects of their lives, seniors can cultivate a greater sense of well-being and satisfaction.

Social Benefits of Gratitude

Gratitude can also play a significant role in strengthening social ties and building stronger relationships. When seniors express their appreciation for others, it promotes a positive cycle of reciprocal kindness and generosity. In environments such as assisted living Phoenix, where community and support are key, gratitude can help deepen connections between residents and staff, fostering a supportive and harmonious living environment.

Encouraging Gratitude Practices

There are several ways senior communities encourage the practice of gratitude among their residents:

1. Gratitude Journals: Keeping a daily diary of things seniors are thankful for can improve their sense of well-being. Writing down positive experiences and feelings helps bring a new and positive perspective on life.

2. Sharing Sessions: Organized group activities where residents can share things they are grateful for with each other can enhance social relationships and provide a platform for positive interactions.

3. Thank You Notes: Encouraging residents to write thank you notes to staff, family, or friends can not only brighten someone else’s day but also reinforce their own feelings of gratitude.

4. Mindfulness and Meditation: Incorporating mindfulness practices that focus on gratitude into the daily routine can help seniors appreciate the present moment and find joy in their everyday lives.

Communities such as retirement communities Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix find that integrating these practices into their programs not only enhances the individual health and happiness of their residents but also contributes to a more positive and supportive community atmosphere.

By fostering gratitude, facilities like assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix help their residents lead more joyful and healthier lives. The practice of gratitude can transform the everyday experience, proving that a simple ‘thank you’ can go a long way toward improving health and well-being in the elderly.

Exercise Tips for Seniors with Diabetes

April 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Managing diabetes requires careful attention to both diet and exercise. For seniors residing in communities such as assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, incorporating regular physical activity into their routine is essential for maintaining blood sugar levels and overall health. Here are some practical exercise tips designed specifically for seniors with diabetes.

Understanding the Importance of Regular Exercise

Regular physical activity helps improve blood glucose control, reduces cardiovascular risk factors, and contributes to weight loss. It can also enhance overall well-being and energy levels, which is especially important for seniors managing chronic conditions like diabetes.

Safe Exercises for Seniors with Diabetes

1. Walking: This low-impact exercise is ideal for seniors as it doesn’t require any special equipment and can be done almost anywhere. Walking for at least 30 minutes a day can significantly improve cardiovascular health and aid in glucose management.

2. Tai Chi: Known for its gentle movements and balance improvement capabilities, Tai Chi is another excellent exercise for seniors. It helps reduce stress and improve neuropathy pain, common in diabetic patients.

3. Swimming: Water activities provide buoyancy that helps relieve stress on the joints while providing a good cardiovascular workout. Swimming or water aerobics are perfect for those who might have mobility issues due to age or diabetes complications.

4. Resistance Training: Incorporating light weights or resistance bands can help build muscle mass, which is beneficial because muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue, even at rest. Strengthening muscles can help control blood sugar levels more effectively.

Adapting Exercise to Individual Needs

Each senior’s health status and physical capability are different. Communities like assisted living Phoenix and memory care Phoenix often offer personalized exercise plans developed in consultation with healthcare providers. These plans consider the individual’s health conditions, current fitness levels, and personal preferences to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Monitoring Blood Sugar Levels

Seniors with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels before and after exercise to understand how different activities affect their glucose levels. This is particularly important to avoid hypoglycemia, a condition where blood sugar levels fall too low. Staff at senior living Phoenix and retirement communities Phoenix can assist residents with regular monitoring and provide guidance based on those readings.

Staying Hydrated and Wearing Appropriate Footwear

Hydration is crucial, especially during physical activities, as dehydration can affect blood sugar levels. Seniors should drink water before, during, and after exercise to stay hydrated. Additionally, proper footwear is essential to protect the feet from injuries, particularly for diabetic seniors who may have reduced sensation in their feet.

Incorporating regular exercise into the daily routine offers numerous health benefits for seniors with diabetes. Communities like senior living Phoenix, assisted living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix are equipped to support their residents in maintaining an active lifestyle, which is crucial for managing diabetes and enhancing overall quality of life.

How to Accurately Measure Blood Pressure at Home

April 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Many of us have had our blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office and were surprised when it turned out to be higher than we expected it to be. If this has happened to you, you may be experiencing something known as “white-coat hypertension,” meaning a higher than warranted reading during a medical appointment.

Doctors say one of the best ways to ensure you do not have elevated blood pressure, is to take your blood pressure at home a number of times. You may also be asked by your healthcare provider to track your blood pressure to see if you should be put on medication or adjust medication to reach a target number.

It is important to do it correctly to ensure readings are accurate. Experts say start by buying a validated monitor and do not buy one that uses the finger or wrist as they are not as accurate as upper-arm cuffs. If you have a much smaller or larger upper-arm, look for one appropriately sized.

Other things to consider are to not take your blood pressure when you are stressed and to wait at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking or exercising. Odd as it sounds you will get a more accurate reading if you empty your bladder right beforehand. Sit comfortably with feet flat on the floor and support your arm near heart height. Now wait a few minutes. A good strategy for a true representation of BP is to take 4 readings a day for 7 days – twice in the morning and twice at night. Let your doctor know your findings.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we are honored to provide a level of assisted living that allows seniors to live rich, independent lives while receiving the personalized care they need. The Emotional Impact Alzheimer’s Disease Has on the Family

April 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.  MorningStar offers experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.

Using Hearing Aids May Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia

April 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar Offers Memory Care in Albuquerque

April 17, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

While there is not a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, it is important to provide the person with the proper level of care.  Along with assisted living, Albuquerque, NM’s MorningStar community offers compassionate memory care. Our Reflections Neighborhood has the amenities and services to ensure the comfort, safety and wellbeing of our most tender residents.

As dementia care specialists, our approach and philosophy to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  All team members, regardless of their position, receive Lavender Sky training, which includes a deeper understanding of the disease and communication techniques to use with memory-impaired residents.  It also includes training in environmental safety and security as well as holistic solutions to challenging behaviors.

An important aspect of our program is to provide plenty of recreational and purposeful activities such as music, life skills, art, entertainers and exercise.  To ensure our residents’ safety and well-being, services include daily health monitoring and around-the-clock staffing as well as a secure courtyard reserved just for memory care residents.

Mealtimes in the Reflections Neighborhood are as much about Community as they are about Nutrition, with residents and team members eating together.  Family style meals allow team members to encourage residents’ appetites as well as to provide any needed assistance with eating.  In addition, much of our food is modified out of respect for some of our residents’ compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Also, bear in mind that we accept residents in the earliest stage of the disease right through to those in more advanced phases that require the highest level of care.  Furthermore, everything we do is in a loving environment that affirms the dignity and value of the individual.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar of Albuquerque.

Try Balance Exercises to Reduce Your Risk of Falling

April 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than one in four people aged 65 years or older suffer from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we understand the importance of our resident’s living life to the fullest.  This is why we offer a Life Enrichment program that focuses on creative ways to stay physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually active.  Please see our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest assisted living Albuquerque, NM offers.  Contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Seniors can Benefit from these Exercises

April 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

It may be hard to stay active in older age. Bodies begin to slow down and you may not have the same amount of muscle mass as you once had. Active senior living activities incorporate many healthy initiatives into their communities to try to keep seniors moving and engaged. If you enjoy moving your body or just want to learn more senior friendly exercises, you might enjoy some of the exercises below.

Yoga and Stretching

Stretching is a great low-impact exercise for seniors. Yoga is a common Eastern exercise that focuses on breathing, positive thinking, and gentle movements to encourage wellness. While some yoga techniques can be a bit intimidating, senior living communities encourage many seniors in assisted living to regularly stretch in ways that feel good to them. Simple movements can help your body feel great.

Short walks

Taking short and intermittent walks throughout the day is great for your health and overall wellness. You do not have to worry about walking quickly or for a long period, it’s simply the routine and consistency that does your body well! Spending more than 10 minutes a day outdoors aids in happiness, relaxation, and boosts metabolism. Seniors often enjoy finding a walking body and going on shaded paths in parks or trails. Be mindful of the area you walk in, as loose gravel and exposed tree roots can be dangerous.

Water Aerobics

If you’re a fan of a workout with serious benefits, you should consider water aerobics. Joint pain and weaker muscles from older age may make it difficult to participate in strenuous exercise. Due to the density of water, your joints will experience relief while you get a workout. This is why water aerobics in senior living facilities is a great, low-impact exercise that keeps seniors active, even if they have chronic health issues, such as arthritis, joint problems, and circulation issues.

Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

April 12, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

If your mom is one of those people who has everything and/or is living in an apartment where she does not have room for a bunch of useless stuff, be creative with this year’s Mother’s Day gift. You may worry that more practical gifts are too boring but if they help to make her life easier and more interesting, most mothers are happy to get them.

If mom lives alone, there are several smartly designed dressing aids to make it easier for her and would be a useful addition to a basket of goodies. If mom likes to wear dresses or blouses that zip up the back, a zipper puller will come in handy. The same goes for a bracelet fastener or magnetic necklace fastener, both are great for those with some mobility problems. A cozy gift idea for a mom or grandmother who always has cold feet is a pair of heatable slippers. Microwaveable ones have a heatable insole typically filled with aromatic ingredients such as lavender and rosemary.

For a mom who suffers from sore muscles and stiffness, how about a Shiatsu pillow massager designed for the back and neck (it can also be used in other places). Simple to use, just plug it in and feel the tension ease from your body with the 3-dimensional deep-kneading shiatsu massage nodes. Want to give mom a spa-like experience? A gift of shower steamer bombs creates a relaxing, aromatherapy experience for women who like showers more than a bath. Most are made with natural ingredients and pure essential oils like lemongrass and lavender.

Moms and grandmothers always love the gift of a loved one’s time. Why not put on a fancy brunch with many of mom’s favorite dishes. An offer to declutter and organize her home or help her write her life story is bound to bring up lots of memories and fun stories to share.

Looking for exceptional senior living? The Benefits of Pet Ownership for Senior Well-being

April 05, 2024 by MS Arcadia in retirement communities

Pet ownership brings joy and companionship into the lives of many, and for seniors, the presence of a furry friend can have a profound impact on their physical and emotional well-being. Residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix experience numerous benefits from pet ownership, which can significantly enhance their quality of life. Let’s explore how pets contribute to the well-being of seniors.

1. Enhanced Physical Health

Regular walks and the daily care involved with pet ownership encourage physical activity, which is essential for maintaining mobility and heart health. This increased activity can help seniors manage their weight, lower blood pressure, and improve their overall physical condition. Senior living Phoenix communities that support pet ownership often see more active residents, thanks to the motivation pets provide.

2. Emotional Support and Companionship

Pets offer unconditional love and companionship, which can be especially comforting for seniors. They provide a sense of purpose and routine, which is particularly beneficial for individuals in assisted living Phoenix who may struggle with loneliness or depression. The companionship of a pet can alleviate feelings of isolation, making each day brighter and more fulfilling.

3. Stress Reduction

Interacting with pets has been shown to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation. The simple act of petting a dog or cat can release endorphins, creating a sense of calm and well-being. For residents in memory care Phoenix, the presence of pets can be incredibly soothing and can even improve interactions with caregivers and family members.

4. Improved Mental Health

Pets can also have a positive impact on the mental health of seniors. Caring for an animal can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, pets can help keep the mind active and engaged, potentially slowing cognitive decline. Retirement communities Phoenix that encourage pet interaction often report higher levels of happiness and mental agility among their residents.

5. Social Opportunities

Pets can act as social catalysts, encouraging interactions with others. Whether it’s chatting with fellow pet owners during walks or sharing stories about pets with friends and family, animals provide a common interest that can foster new friendships. This is particularly advantageous in senior apartments Phoenix, where building a vibrant, supportive community is key to resident satisfaction.

For seniors, the benefits of pet ownership extend far beyond companionship. From enhancing physical health to providing emotional support and boosting social interaction, pets can play a crucial role in improving the overall well-being of seniors. Communities across assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix recognize the value pets bring into their residents’ lives, often incorporating pet-friendly policies to support this enriching aspect of senior living.

It is Not Uncommon for Seniors to Experience Brain Fog From Medications

April 05, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

As we age, many seniors experience occasional “brain fog” or forgetfulness and have trouble comprehending and processing new information. Medical experts say this may be a normal part of aging but could also be from some of the medications you are taking.

Dr. Mark Albers, a neurologist at the McCance Center for Brain Health at Harvard – affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, says it is not uncommon for seniors to experience symptoms of brain fog when taking certain medications for the first time. He explains medications can affect memory more in aging adults as “older people tend to metabolize drugs more slowly, making them more sensitive to medications and more vulnerable to side effects.”

Other reasons medications cause more problems in seniors are they often take larger doses of a drug and more frequently as well as take several drugs to treat one health condition. Moreover, older people may have a weakened blood-brain barrier. This barrier works to block toxins and other harmful substances including drugs from entering the brain, which may account for some memory problems.

Sleep medications are one of the common medications that can be problematic. Over-the-counter sleeping aids can contain anticholinergic drugs, which are known to impair cognitive function, and some prescription sleep drugs diminish activity in parts of the brain involved in transferring short-term memories to long-term memory. Pain medications can additionally result in memory problems. The good news is once patients stop taking sleep or pain meds, modify the dose or replace the drug with a better option, many of the problems go away.

MorningStar of Albuquerque is proud to offer seniors a vibrant and carefree lifestyle to help live life to the fullest. Our community offers a selection of assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans equipped with kitchenettes, handicapped-accessible bathrooms, and emergency call systems.  Residents enjoy all-day dining, fitness room, theater, salon and fireside patio along with wellness programs and activities. Meal Planning Tips for Seniors Seeking a Balanced Diet

April 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

For seniors, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for overall health, supporting everything from bone strength to mental acuity. Whether residing in assisted living Phoenix, enjoying the community at senior living Phoenix, part of retirement communities Phoenix, living independently in senior apartments Phoenix, or receiving specialized care in memory care Phoenix, meal planning plays a vital role in ensuring nutritional needs are met. Here are effective meal planning tips tailored for seniors.

1. Incorporate Variety

A balanced diet consists of a variety of food groups including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy. Mixing these not only ensures a range of nutrients but also keeps meals interesting. Facilities in senior living Phoenix often offer diverse menus to cater to this need, inspiring residents to explore different foods within their meal plans.

2. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods

As we age, our caloric needs may decrease, making it essential to focus on nutrient-dense foods that provide vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients without too many calories. Leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fatty fish are excellent choices. This approach is particularly emphasized in assisted living Phoenix to support seniors’ health without excessive caloric intake.

3. Plan for Hydration

Adequate hydration is crucial, yet often overlooked. Including water, herbal teas, and other hydrating fluids in your daily plan is as important as the solid foods you eat. Memory care Phoenix communities ensure that residents have easy access to fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

4. Easy and Accessible Snacks

Having healthy snacks readily available can help seniors meet their nutritional needs between meals. Snacks like sliced vegetables, fruits, nuts, or yogurt are nutritious options that are easy to prepare and eat. Senior apartments Phoenix encourage seniors to keep such snacks on hand, offering convenience and nutritional benefits.

5. Consider Special Dietary Needs

Many seniors have specific dietary requirements due to health conditions. Tailoring meal plans to accommodate these needs, whether low sodium for heart health or high fiber for digestive health, ensures that dietary restrictions are met without compromising on nutrition or taste. Retirement communities Phoenix are adept at customizing meals to meet these varied needs.

6. Seek Professional Guidance

When in doubt, consulting with a dietitian or nutritionist can provide personalized advice tailored to individual health needs and preferences. This service, often available through senior living Phoenix and other senior communities, can help in creating meal plans that are both enjoyable and health-promoting.

Meal planning is a fundamental component of maintaining a balanced diet for seniors. By incorporating variety, focusing on nutrient-dense foods, planning for hydration, preparing easy snacks, considering dietary needs, and seeking professional guidance, residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix can enjoy the benefits of a well-rounded diet, supporting their health and well-being in the golden years.

Senior Communities Offer a Broad Range of Amenities and Services

April 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as yard work and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many senior communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As an assisted living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services senior communities provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, salon, theater, fitness room, library, fireside patio, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle for residents. After a Diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

April 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Housing

MCI (mild cognitive impairment) can be a precursor to dementia but does not always progress to dementia. Medical professionals report 10% to 40% of MCI cases go on to become dementia, and a good percentage of those become Alzheimer’s disease. On the positive side, research shows as many as 30-40% of people with MCI get better. As with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, there are no drugs to treat MCI but doctors say there are steps we can take to mitigate or minimize its effects.

MCI is just as its name suggests. The impairment is mild and does not affect a person’s ability to care for themselves or take away their independence. Steps a person should take to protect their cognitive health include quitting smoking and moderating or eliminating alcohol consumption. If you do have hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol levels or diabetes, it is important to treat these conditions and manage them through medications, diet and healthy lifestyle habits.

Other things you can do to thwart, delay or minimize the effects of MCI are to maintain a healthy weight and exercise, which is good for our brains as well as our bodies. Avoid junk food, highly processed foods and foods high in sodium; and reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. Isolation has also been linked to a higher risk for dementia, so it is important to stay social.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Santa Fe provides compassionate, individualized memory care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is tailored to serve the needs of our special residents from purposeful activities to nutritional, easy-to-eat foods.  Our job is to elevate and celebrate life by trying to connect with and nurture the individual each day, and to ensure they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s senior housing in Santa Fe, NM.

Change Unhealthy Habits for Better Cognitive Health

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6½ hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scan, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

Understanding and Preventing Dementia in Seniors

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

Dementia is a collective term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline, such as forgetfulness. It significantly affects a person’s daily life, but there are ways to manage and possibly prevent its onset. For residents in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, understanding dementia is the first step towards prevention and ensuring a quality life.

1. Engage in Regular Physical Activity

Physical exercise is not only good for the heart but also for the brain. Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can help to prevent dementia. Many senior living Phoenix and retirement communities Phoenix offer fitness programs tailored to seniors, providing safe and enjoyable ways to stay active.

2. Maintain a Healthy Diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can benefit brain health and possibly prevent dementia. Foods high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial. Dining services in assisted living Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix often focus on nutritious meal plans that support cognitive health.

3. Keep Your Mind Active

Mental stimulation can help to keep the brain active and reduce the risk of dementia. Activities like reading, solving puzzles, playing musical instruments, or learning a new skill can stimulate the brain. Memory care Phoenix facilities incorporate a variety of cognitive activities into their daily programs to support brain health.

4. Stay Socially Connected

Social interaction helps prevent dementia by keeping the mind engaged. Joining clubs, attending social events, and even simple daily interactions can make a significant difference. Assisted living Phoenix and senior living Phoenix communities provide numerous opportunities for residents to connect with others, fostering a sense of belonging and mental engagement.

5. Regular Health Check-Ups

Managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol is crucial in preventing dementia. Regular check-ups can help in managing these conditions effectively. Retirement communities Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix often have on-site health services or partnerships with local healthcare providers to ensure residents receive comprehensive care.

6. Quality Sleep

Good sleep hygiene is essential for brain health. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful sleeping environment can improve sleep quality. Memory care Phoenix facilities emphasize the importance of sleep in their care routines, recognizing its role in cognitive function.

Understanding and preventing dementia involves a multifaceted approach focusing on physical health, mental activity, social engagement, and proper medical care. For those in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, adopting these strategies can contribute to a reduced risk of dementia and promote overall well-being in senior years.

Popular Assisted Living Wellness Programs

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Holistic wellness programs in assisted living communities encourage healthy and happy lifestyles in seniors. Active senior living communities understand the priority of connection and involvement, which is why MorningStar Senior Living offers specialized wellness programs for seniors in assisted living that are thoroughly planned by our dedicated Life Enrichment Teams.

MorningStar’s Life Enrichment Teams plan creative ways for seniors to tap into their unique talents and experiences. Some residents choose to lead special interest clubs themselves. On top of the programs MorningStar Senior Living has to offer, there are also the following popular assisted living wellness programs that combat loneliness and isolation in seniors:

Fitness classes

Having access to physical movement, no matter how small, is extremely beneficial for seniors. Even if a senior struggles with decreased mobility, assisted living wellness programs can still help these residents move their bodies. Gentle stretching, short walks, and water aerobics are just some of the low-impact workouts for seniors in assisted living to enjoy.

Healthy dining options

When seniors struggle to care for themselves, it is often their eating habits that take a turn for the worst first. Having healthy dining options available for seniors in assisted living is crucial in supporting overall wellness. Diets also alter as we age, and senior living dining should offer modified menus and recipes to accommodate changing needs and tastes.

Relaxation therapies

Even in retirement seniors can experience anxiety and distress. Especially if they are dealing with worries about their health, family, or adjusting to a new senior living community. Relaxation therapies like music therapy, crafting, and animal therapy are all innovative approaches to help seniors feel more involved and relaxed in assisted living.
