The Difference Between Senior Living and Nursing Homes Explained

August 21, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

When it comes to senior living options, people often feel confused about the differences between senior living and nursing homes. Making arrangements for a loved one or parent is never easy, which is why you should keep reading to better understand the differences.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are mostly designed for seniors who need a high level of medical care, nursing, and supervision. You may have also heard nursing homes being referred to as skilled nursing facilities. This is because most of their staff are registered nurses nursing assistants who can offer more specialized medical care, where most facilities do not have a large nursing staff available at all times.

Senior Living

Senior living is often an umbrella term used to address independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Independent living is designed for seniors who live autonomously and want to experience a stress-free retirement with walkable amenities, prepared meals, and weekly activities around like-minded seniors for socialization. Assisted living and memory care is similar to a nursing home, but they cannot provide care for severe health conditions that regularly require medical intervention.

MorningStar Senior Living

Within its communities, MorningStar Senior Living offers Assisted Living. This means seniors can get the support they need while experiencing all the joys that come with retirement. While they are not a skilled nursing facility, they do offer around the clock Care Managers. Each MorningStar community also has access to at least one full-time licensed nurse for clinical concerns 24/7.

A Quick Guide to Senior Living

August 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Senior living offers different options for housing and care specifically for seniors. Past the age of 55, older adults begin to experience changing needs and health concerns. This is why senior living that is customizable and built with seniors in mind is so popular in retirement. There are many living options available. Below is a quick guide that can help you better understand the options available.

Independent Living

Independent living is ideal for seniors who are completely autonomous and want to fully experience retirement without the added stress of homeownership, chores, upkeep, and isolation. There are many options for all-inclusive senior living, which allows seniors to experience a variety of amenities, activities, and independence with like-minded individuals.

Assisted Living

Like independent living, assisted living offers seniors an active and safe community while providing extra care and attention. Assisted living is ideal for seniors who are still pretty autonomous, but might require more check-ins and help performing daily tasks, like cleaning themselves, preparing meals, and keeping up with important dates and information.

In assisted living, seniors receive personalized care plans that match their exact needs and routines to keep them healthy and safe, while still getting to enjoy retirement.

Memory Care

Memory care is the most specialized option for senior living and revolves around creating a safe community for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other forms of memory loss. Like assisted living, memory care also creates personalized care plans that work in tandem with medical provider and family recommendations. The goal of memory care at MorningStar is to work with memory care symptoms to offer the best life for these seniors.

Creating a Memory-Friendly Home Environment

August 14, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Making our homes comfortable and safe is important, especially as we or our loved ones age. For those experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline, having a supportive environment can make a world of difference. Let’s explore some practical ways to create a memory-friendly home that promotes safety, independence, and peace of mind.

When I first helped my mom set up her space to be more memory-friendly, we found that a few small changes could have a big impact. Here are some tips we discovered along the way:

Simplify and Declutter

A cluttered space can be overwhelming and confusing for someone with memory issues. Begin by removing unnecessary items and keeping only essentials in view. This helps reduce distractions and makes it easier to focus on daily activities. In our senior living Phoenix community, we encourage residents to keep their living spaces organized and simple, which fosters a calming atmosphere.

Use Clear Signage and Labels

Labeling cabinets, drawers, and rooms with clear signs can help remind individuals where items are stored or where certain activities take place. For instance, placing a label on the bathroom door or the kitchen cabinets can assist with navigation. We’ve seen firsthand how these small reminders can make life easier for residents in our memory care Phoenix facilities.

Incorporate Familiar and Soothing Elements

Bringing in familiar objects and personal touches can make a space feel comforting and safe. Display family photos, favorite books, or cherished mementos to create a sense of connection and nostalgia. Soft lighting and calming colors can also contribute to a soothing environment. My mom always found comfort in her favorite quilt, so we made sure it had a special place in her room.

Ensure Safety and Accessibility

Safety is paramount in a memory-friendly home. Remove tripping hazards such as loose rugs or electrical cords, and ensure that pathways are clear and well-lit. Installing grab bars in the bathroom and non-slip mats can prevent falls. For those considering assisted living Phoenix, communities are designed with these safety features to provide a secure environment.

Establish Routines and Structure

Consistency and routine can be incredibly beneficial for individuals with memory challenges. Establishing a daily schedule helps reduce confusion and provides a sense of stability. Simple routines, such as regular meal times and bedtime rituals, can have a positive impact. In our community, we find that maintaining consistent schedules helps residents feel more at ease.

Engage in Cognitive Activities

Stimulating the mind with cognitive activities is another way to support memory health. Puzzles, word games, and arts and crafts are excellent ways to keep the brain active and engaged. Our senior living Phoenix community often hosts activities that encourage creativity and cognitive stimulation, providing both enjoyment and mental exercise.

In conclusion, creating a memory-friendly home environment involves thoughtful planning and attention to detail. Whether you’re adapting a current living space or exploring options like memory care Phoenix, these strategies can help create a supportive atmosphere where individuals with memory challenges can thrive. By making these adjustments, we not only enhance safety and comfort but also promote independence and well-being.

The Importance of Hydration: Tips for Seniors

August 07, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Greetings from our cozy community! We often find ourselves gathered around the table or enjoying the fresh air outside, chatting about the little things that keep us healthy and happy. One topic that always pops up is hydration, especially since it’s something many of us need to pay a bit more attention to as we age.

Water might not be the most exciting topic, but it’s essential. Our bodies rely on water to function properly, and it’s especially important for us seniors to stay hydrated. Over the years, I’ve noticed that many of my fellow residents, including myself, don’t feel as thirsty as we used to. It’s not just us—many older adults experience this, which makes it easy to become dehydrated without realizing it.

Understanding Dehydration

Dehydration can creep up on us. Some signs to watch out for include dry mouth, feeling tired or dizzy, and darker urine. One of our neighbors, Bob, told me about a time he was feeling particularly fatigued. It turned out he just needed to up his water intake. A simple fix that made him feel so much better!

Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated

Let’s talk about some practical tips to help us all stay hydrated:

  1. Keep Water Handy: Having a water bottle by your side is a simple way to remind yourself to sip throughout the day. I keep mine with me, especially when enjoying the beautiful weather here in senior living Phoenix.

  2. Make Water More Exciting: If plain water doesn’t sound appealing, try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or cucumber. It’s a little trick we’ve picked up that makes drinking water feel like a treat.

  3. Drink with Meals: Make it a habit to have a glass of water with every meal and snack. It’s a routine that’s easy to remember and keeps you hydrated throughout the day.

  4. Eat Water-rich Foods: Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges are not only delicious but also help you stay hydrated. We often enjoy these as snacks or part of our meals.

  5. Check Your Urine Color: A quick glance at your urine color can tell you a lot about your hydration level. Aim for a light yellow color.

Hydration in Our Community

In our retirement communities Phoenix, we’ve made hydration a fun and social part of our lives. Whether we’re sharing a pitcher of infused water or enjoying a fruity snack together, we make it easy and enjoyable to stay hydrated. It’s a great way to remind each other of its importance and to keep our spirits high.

For anyone considering assisted living Phoenix or looking to stay healthy at home, remember that staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to care for yourself. If you have any personal tips or stories about hydration, we’d love to hear them. Sharing these little pieces of wisdom is what makes our community truly special.

Here’s to staying hydrated and feeling our best every day!

Taking Your Blood Pressure at Home

July 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Many of us have had our blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office and were surprised when it turned out to be higher than we expected it to be. If this has happened to you, you may be experiencing something known as “white-coat hypertension,” meaning a higher than warranted reading during a medical appointment.

Doctors say one of the best ways to ensure you do not have elevated blood pressure, is to take your blood pressure at home a number of times. You may also be asked by your healthcare provider to track your blood pressure to see if you should be put on medication or adjust medication to reach a target number.

It is important to do it correctly to ensure readings are accurate. Experts say start by buying a validated monitor and do not buy one that uses the finger or wrist as they are not as accurate as upper-arm cuffs. If you have a much smaller or larger upper-arm, look for one appropriately sized.

Other things to consider are to not take your blood pressure when you are stressed and to wait at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking or exercising. Odd as it sounds you will get a more accurate reading if you empty your bladder right beforehand. Sit comfortably with feet flat on the floor and support your arm near heart height. Now wait a few minutes. A good strategy for a true representation of BP is to take 4 readings a day for 7 days – twice in the morning and twice at night. Let your doctor know your findings.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we are honored to provide a level of assisted living that allows seniors to live rich, independent lives while receiving the personalized care they need. The Impact of Social Media on Senior Cognitive Function

July 10, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

Today, we will talk about something that has become an integral part of our daily lives: social media. We’ll explore its impact on cognitive function and share some tips for using it in a way that benefits those in memory care Phoenix.

Staying Connected Through Social Media

In today’s digital age, social media platforms have transformed the way we stay connected with one another. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter allow us to keep in touch with family and friends, near and far. Whether sharing photos, exchanging messages, or catching up on the latest news, social media has made staying connected easier than ever.

The Cognitive Benefits of Social Media

Believe it or not, using social media can positively affect our cognitive function. Engaging with others online can provide mental stimulation, keeping our brains active and agile. Additionally, sharing and receiving new information through social media can help to enhance cognitive abilities such as memory and problem-solving skills.

Tips for Harnessing the Positive Potential of Social Media

Now that we understand the cognitive benefits of social media, let’s discuss some empowering tips for seniors and their families on making the most of these platforms:

  • Connect with Like-Minded Individuals: Join groups or follow pages that align with your interests. Finding like-minded individuals can lead to meaningful and stimulating conversations; whether it’s a hobby, a favorite author, or a cause you’re passionate about.

  • Share Positive Stories and Memories: Use social media to share uplifting stories and cherished memories. Doing so spreads joy to others and reinforces your positive experiences.

  • Stay Informed: Follow reputable news sources to stay updated on current events and relevant information. Remember to verify the credibility of the sources to ensure you’re receiving accurate news.

Senior Apartments Phoenix: Embracing Technology in Community Living

At our senior living community in Phoenix, we recognize the importance of embracing technology and social media. Our residents have access to technology classes and social media workshops to help them stay connected with their loved ones while reaping the cognitive benefits that these platforms offer.

Memory Care Phoenix: Nurturing Cognitive Function through Social Engagement

In memory care Phoenix, we understand the significance of social engagement in preserving cognitive function. Through supervised access to social media and tailored activities, we aim to create a supportive environment where individuals can stay connected and engaged.

As we’ve explored the impact of social media on senior cognitive function, it’s clear that when used thoughtfully, social media can be a valuable tool for staying connected and keeping our minds sharp.

Skin Care Routines for Seniors to Maintain Skin Health in Hot Weather

June 26, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Maintaining skin health becomes particularly important for seniors during hot weather. High temperatures and increased sun exposure can cause various skin issues. For residents in and senior living Santa Fe NM, adopting effective skin care routines can make a significant difference in their overall well-being.

Hydration is Key

One of the most crucial aspects of maintaining healthy skin is staying hydrated. Seniors should drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep their skin hydrated from the inside out. Additionally, using hydrating moisturizers can help lock in moisture and prevent dryness. For those in senior housing Santa Fe NM, it’s essential to choose products that are suitable for their skin type and address specific concerns like sensitivity or dryness.

Sun Protection

Sun protection is vital for seniors, especially during hot weather. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 can protect the skin from harmful UV rays. It’s important to apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, can further shield the skin from sun damage. Residents in senior living Santa Fe NM should make sun protection a part of their daily routine to prevent sunburns and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Gentle Cleansing

Using a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils is essential for seniors. Harsh soaps can lead to dryness and irritation, especially in hot weather. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers that cleanse the skin without causing any damage. Washing the face twice a day with a gentle cleanser can help maintain skin health and prevent breakouts.

Moisturizing Regularly

Applying a good moisturizer is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness. Choose a moisturizer that suits the skin type and addresses specific needs, such as anti-aging for sensitive skin. Seniors in senior living Santa Fe NM should apply moisturizer immediately after showering to lock in moisture and keep their skin soft and supple.

Avoiding Excessive Heat

Seniors should avoid spending too much time in direct sunlight, especially during peak hours when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Staying indoors or in shaded areas can prevent overheating and protect the skin from sun damage. Using fans or air conditioning can help keep the living environment cool and comfortable, reducing the risk of heat-related skin issues.

Regular Skin Checks

Regular skin checks can help seniors detect any changes or abnormalities early. It’s important to look for new moles, growths, or changes in existing spots and consult a healthcare provider if any concerns arise. Residents should schedule routine skin examinations with their doctors to monitor their skin health and address any issues promptly.

By following these skin care routines, seniors can maintain healthy skin and enjoy the summer months without worrying about skin problems. Taking proactive steps to protect and nourish the skin can lead to improved overall health and well-being.

Meeting the Needs of a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

June 21, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety, especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque offers care to those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages their independence while keeping them safe.  Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. How to Make Your Senior Living Apartment Feel More Like Home

May 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Seniors often worry if their new senior living community will feel like home. For many seniors, they likely lived in the same home for many years of their life. This makes the moving anxiety understandable. Although this change can be overwhelming, choosing the best assisted living community near you ensures access to top-notch amenities, comfortable living arrangements, and excellent dining options. With some support, your new space will feel like home in no time.

At MorningStar Assisted Living in Sparks, NV, seniors discover a premier senior living community that actually feels like home, with built-in companionship, luxury amenities, and budget-friendly living options. Keep reading to learn how to help your loved one create a comfortable assisted living apartment.

Style and Accessorize with Special Belongings

One of the easiest ways to make an unfamiliar space feel more like home is to style it similarly to the home you felt closest to. Seniors in assisted living may struggle with memory loss or other ailments that can make them feel more uncomfortable with their surroundings, this is why it is important to style their space with some of their favorite things that they hold dear. If you know they love a specific style, pattern, or texture, be sure to fill their new senior living apartment with all the things sure to make them feel right at home.

Ease The Mind by Removing Clutter

When downsizing, it can be overwhelming to go through years of items and belongings. However, extra stuff can make your loved one stressed and anxious in their new space, especially if there is not ample room for it all. Take the time to sit with your loved one and help them sort through their belongings, making sure only to pack the things most necessary to them. Storage spaces can also be an option if your loved one still wants to hold on to some items that they would eventually like to pass on later down the line.

Seniors can Benefit from these Exercises

April 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

It may be hard to stay active in older age. Bodies begin to slow down and you may not have the same amount of muscle mass as you once had. Active senior living activities incorporate many healthy initiatives into their communities to try to keep seniors moving and engaged. If you enjoy moving your body or just want to learn more senior friendly exercises, you might enjoy some of the exercises below.

Yoga and Stretching

Stretching is a great low-impact exercise for seniors. Yoga is a common Eastern exercise that focuses on breathing, positive thinking, and gentle movements to encourage wellness. While some yoga techniques can be a bit intimidating, senior living communities encourage many seniors in assisted living to regularly stretch in ways that feel good to them. Simple movements can help your body feel great.

Short walks

Taking short and intermittent walks throughout the day is great for your health and overall wellness. You do not have to worry about walking quickly or for a long period, it’s simply the routine and consistency that does your body well! Spending more than 10 minutes a day outdoors aids in happiness, relaxation, and boosts metabolism. Seniors often enjoy finding a walking body and going on shaded paths in parks or trails. Be mindful of the area you walk in, as loose gravel and exposed tree roots can be dangerous.

Water Aerobics

If you’re a fan of a workout with serious benefits, you should consider water aerobics. Joint pain and weaker muscles from older age may make it difficult to participate in strenuous exercise. Due to the density of water, your joints will experience relief while you get a workout. This is why water aerobics in senior living facilities is a great, low-impact exercise that keeps seniors active, even if they have chronic health issues, such as arthritis, joint problems, and circulation issues.

Meal Planning Tips for Seniors Seeking a Balanced Diet

April 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

For seniors, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for overall health, supporting everything from bone strength to mental acuity. Whether residing in assisted living Phoenix, enjoying the community at senior living Phoenix, part of retirement communities Phoenix, living independently in senior apartments Phoenix, or receiving specialized care in memory care Phoenix, meal planning plays a vital role in ensuring nutritional needs are met. Here are effective meal planning tips tailored for seniors.

1. Incorporate Variety

A balanced diet consists of a variety of food groups including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and dairy. Mixing these not only ensures a range of nutrients but also keeps meals interesting. Facilities in senior living Phoenix often offer diverse menus to cater to this need, inspiring residents to explore different foods within their meal plans.

2. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods

As we age, our caloric needs may decrease, making it essential to focus on nutrient-dense foods that provide vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients without too many calories. Leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fatty fish are excellent choices. This approach is particularly emphasized in assisted living Phoenix to support seniors’ health without excessive caloric intake.

3. Plan for Hydration

Adequate hydration is crucial, yet often overlooked. Including water, herbal teas, and other hydrating fluids in your daily plan is as important as the solid foods you eat. Memory care Phoenix communities ensure that residents have easy access to fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

4. Easy and Accessible Snacks

Having healthy snacks readily available can help seniors meet their nutritional needs between meals. Snacks like sliced vegetables, fruits, nuts, or yogurt are nutritious options that are easy to prepare and eat. Senior apartments Phoenix encourage seniors to keep such snacks on hand, offering convenience and nutritional benefits.

5. Consider Special Dietary Needs

Many seniors have specific dietary requirements due to health conditions. Tailoring meal plans to accommodate these needs, whether low sodium for heart health or high fiber for digestive health, ensures that dietary restrictions are met without compromising on nutrition or taste. Retirement communities Phoenix are adept at customizing meals to meet these varied needs.

6. Seek Professional Guidance

When in doubt, consulting with a dietitian or nutritionist can provide personalized advice tailored to individual health needs and preferences. This service, often available through senior living Phoenix and other senior communities, can help in creating meal plans that are both enjoyable and health-promoting.

Meal planning is a fundamental component of maintaining a balanced diet for seniors. By incorporating variety, focusing on nutrient-dense foods, planning for hydration, preparing easy snacks, considering dietary needs, and seeking professional guidance, residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix can enjoy the benefits of a well-rounded diet, supporting their health and well-being in the golden years.

Stretching is a Good Way to Begin Exercising

If you are a senior who would like to get some exercise, you may not know how to begin.  For one thing, you probably realize you are not as fit as you used to be, and are not up to the same degree of physical activity that you once did.  And of course, before you begin any new form of exercise, you will need to check with your doctor to make sure you are fit enough, especially if you have osteoporosis, an injury, or balance issues.

Once you get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, stretching is a good place to begin.  In fact, studies show that as we grow older our flexibility decreases by up to 50 percent in some joints.  Another good thing about stretching is many exercises are appropriate for any level of fitness including ones that can be done sitting in a chair.  Stretching can help you maintain your flexibility and mobility as well as loosen up some of your stiffness in your back, neck and shoulder muscles.

Another plus about stretching exercises is that most of them do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere.  The Silver Sneakers website recommends that as you stretch, “to breathe deeply, and go slowly. Listen to your body, and never force a movement that causes pain.”  They remind seniors it is okay if they cannot bend very far as over time they will loosen up some.  Safety is always important and you do not want to hurt yourself.  Other exercises especially good for seniors include chair yoga, resistance band workouts, walking, and dumbbell strength training.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our beautiful community offers a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents.  Located on the popular northeast side of town between Paseo del Norte and Palomas, we are convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services.  Contact us to learn what sets us apart from other senior living Albuquerque, NM offers and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Poor Oral Health Linked to Alzheimer's Disease

February 23, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary problems to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases progress, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. When the time comes for memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Albuquerque, a senior living community offering specialized care for individuals with memory impairment diseases. How is Your Senior Living Incorporating More Healthy Dining Options in Their Assisted Living Community?

February 21, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

A new year is a great excuse to start treating your body and mind better. What better way to improve your overall health and well-being than by eating healthier and more nutritious meals?

Unfortunately, many seniors may not have access to healthy dining options especially if they need assisted care. If this is the case, your loved one may eat fast or processed foods more often than they should.

Luxury senior living at MorningStar offers seniors in assisted living care restaurant-style meals that prioritize ingredients known to support brain health by their high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. These meals encourage better brain and body health.

The charge of MorningStar’s culinary team is not just to create flavors to delight the eye and palate, but to leverage the phenomenal benefits of these aptly named “Super Foods.”

Benefits of Superfoods for Seniors

Superfoods are nutrient-dense foods that are rich in health-promoting compounds. Incorporating superfoods into a senior’s diet can offer a range of benefits, supporting overall health and well-being. Here are just some advantages of including superfoods in a senior’s diet:

Supporting Brain Function

Foods like salmon, sardines, walnuts, eggs, and grass fed beef are some “Super Foods” that contain powerful omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 supports brain function and is an essential fat that the body needs to function. At MorningStar, our executive chefs are aware of the powerful benefits of eating omega-3 fatty acids.

Digestive Health

Did you know consuming too many processed foods can harm your gut microbiome? Seniors should pay special attention to the foods they consume and how those foods impact their digestive health. Eating foods rich in fiber and live cultures is the best way to ensure you are feeding your body the nutrients it needs.

Increase Bone Strength With a Healthy Diet

January 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The Mayo Clinic explains our bodies constantly absorb and replace bone tissue. When a person has osteoporosis, their body is removing old bone but not keeping up with making new bone. Early warning signs of osteoporosis include bone fractures, lost height, curved back, sudden back pain and gastrointestinal problems. However, many people have no symptoms, and it isn’t until a bone fracture or a bone density test (measuring the proportion of minerals in the bones), do they learn they have osteoporosis. A step above osteoporosis is osteopenia, which affects approximately half of Americans over age 50.

It is important to work with your doctor if your bone loss has progressed to osteoporosis as there are medications that can help build stronger bones. In addition, you can help increase bone strength with a healthy diet of foods high in calcium, vitamins D and K, and protein. Foods containing calcium include dairy and soy, fish and green leafy vegetables like kale. Additionally, many foods are fortified with calcium so check labels. Protein is found in meat, fish, eggs, soy and dairy products, beans, lentils, and legumes as well as seeds and nuts. Experts recommend people over age 70 increase their uptake of vitamin D to 800 IU daily, which they can also obtain from supplements.

Consuming a lot of salt should be avoided as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports overconsumption of salt can cause the kidneys to excrete calcium. Studies indicate consuming caffeine in coffee or caffeinated drinks can additionally interfere with the body’ absorption of calcium and it is recommended older adults limit their coffee intake to no more than three cups a day. Limiting alcohol also helps maintain bone health.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living Albuquerque, NM offers.

When You Eat a Breakfast With Protein, You Stay Full and Satisfied Longer

January 10, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit.  Nutritionists say another incentive for eating protein in the morning is it may help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period.

Explore 3 Assisted Living Creative Programs in Senior Living

December 13, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Creative therapies have been proven beneficial for seniors. Suppose a loved one is struggling with completing everyday tasks or experiencing anxiety due to being overwhelmed and confused with everyday life. In that case, they may benefit from exploring creative programs and therapies designed for seniors needing assisted care.

At MorningStar Assisted Living in Sparks, NV, our creative programs developed by our Life Enrichment Teams are essential to maintaining cognitive health and quality of life for all our senior residents. Keep reading to explore three of the most popular assisted living creative programs offered in assisted living.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a very successful form of therapy for seniors as it offers a wide range of possibilities. Generally, seniors can paint, draw, complete crafts, write, and much more during art therapy. Art therapy for seniors in assisted living care enhances social skills and improves cognitive and sensory-motor functions. These abilities usually diminish as we age and our memory declines. Art therapy is a great way to combat these symptoms of memory loss in seniors.

Music Therapy

There is impressive research to back up the effectiveness of music therapy and you don’t need to be a musician to enjoy the benefits! You can find music therapy in assisted living that often looks like drum circles, listening to classical music while relaxing, or practicing an instrument. Music therapy is very relaxing for seniors in assisted care and helps them recall memories and lower anxiety.

Pet therapy

It’s hard to be discouraged when interacting with cuddly animals. Pet therapy is a great way for seniors to relax and indulge their inner child. Spending time with an animal or pet you enjoy can greatly reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. MorningStar Assisted Living offers a mix of art therapies like pet therapy and other creative activities that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit through a holistic approach.
