The Benefits of Regular Exercise for Seniors in Senior Living

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Exercise, even something simple like walking, helps seniors maintain a healthy weight. Senior living communities that offer access to walking trails, sidewalks, exercise rooms, and other places for seniors to walk encourages a healthy environment. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces seniors’ risk of chronic diseases and other health concerns, too.

Improved Mood

How much we move our bodies can certainly have an impact on how we feel about life. Exercise has been proven to improve moods and emotional reactions. Regular exercise helps us to clear our minds and be one within our bodies. This promotes good overall health, especially for seniors who may be experiencing stress or irritability.

A Fun Project To Do With an Elderly Parent or Grandparent

August 14, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If an elderly parent or another loved one is in an assisted living community and has limited mobility, you may feel it is difficult to think of things to talk about or to do when you visit.  Scrapbooking is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Also, it can be more than just a means to pass the time and preserve memories for older adults but can be beneficial to them as well.

By organizing an activity such as scrapbooking, it can help to keep everyone engaged as well as inspire your loved one to start sharing stories about the “good old days.”  As you start documenting their life story, it will likely bring back memories they may have forgotten and/or the rest of the family has never heard.  Along with exercising the brain with recollections of the past, scrapbooking can boost self-esteem, improve one’s dexterity and increase socialization by introducing new topics of conversation.

To get started, visit your local craft store or shop on the Internet for scrapbooking supplies that will help you create a book that is uniquely your parent’s.  Your next step is to help gather and organize the photos and materials in chronological order that will go into the scrapbook.

If the project seems too overwhelming for your parents, have them pick a theme such as family vacations or weddings through the years, or do one that focuses on their childhood and early years.  Before you start to glue things in, take the time to layout the photos and mementos for each page; and most importantly, encourage and enjoy the stories and memories shared by your loved one.

If you are looking for assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Albuquerque. Assisted Living Provides Care Services and Much More

August 09, 2024 by MS Arcadia

When asked, many seniors say they would prefer to age in place in their own home, but at some point, a family may have to consider if there isn’t a better, safer option for them. Assisted living communities are designed for people who are largely independent but require support with daily activities. They offer residents many benefits such as peace of mind knowing help is there whenever they need it, access to licensed nurses, medication management and transportation to doctor’s appointments.

The range of activities is typically broad with something to appeal to everyone. Whether you are a movie buff who loves classic films, a trivia expert or a budding artist who would love the chance to explore their creative side, assisted living makes it easy to stay involved. Many communities also have fitness centers and exercise classes tailored to seniors as well as large outdoor areas perfect for taking a stroll or sitting out on the patio with friends.

Safety and security are important to seniors and living in an assisted living community gives you both. Communities are designed to meet the needs of residents dealing with mobility issues, and offer ramps, flat thresholds, wide corridors and hallway hand railings. Handicap accessible bathrooms are another benefit of assisted living.

Studies show seniors who are isolated and lack socialization are at risk for dementia, and community living offers a vibrant lifestyle without much effort. Other perks include healthy, balanced meals seniors no longer need to cook.

Remember your parents have worked hard all their lives to provide for others and it is time to think about their happiness and well-being. At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we offer seniors assisted living which allows them to live life to the fullest. Along with well-designed suites and care services, residents enjoy an array of luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities.

In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides experienced, compassionate care for those with memory impairment diseases. Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

Assisted Living at MorningStar of Albuquerque

July 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If you have been relying on a piecemeal approach to care for your elderly parent’s various needs, you may want to consider moving them into an assisted living community.    If cost is the reason you have not considered community living, you may not be aware that assisted living can be more affordable than in-home care services.  Experts say if you are paying for more than 40 hours of weekly care, all told, assisted living is probably less expensive.

Moreover, the peace of mind you get knowing trained care managers are always available to help navigate changes in your loved one’s health is priceless.  At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide residents a beautiful home along with a lifestyle of comfort and wellbeing.  In addition, our team is committed to caring for seniors and ensuring they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

As an assisted living resident, your parents will have an individualized care plan created just for them after an extensive interview process with our Wellness Director.  It includes an assessment of their current health as well as a full review of their medical history. Additionally, we routinely re-evaluate the needs of our residents and update care plans as needed.  Monthly costs are based on the level of care (we have five levels), along with various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, that are priced a la carte.

Our contemporary suites are ready to move into and all new residents need to do is bring their furnishings and personal items. We provide the rest including three daily tasty and nutritious meals, a 24/7 care staff, full-time licensed nurse, scheduled transportation and much more.  And in case you wondered, MorningStar is pet friendly.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living in Albuquerque.

Gift Ideas for a Loved One in an Assisted Living Community

July 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

It can be difficult to find the right gift for a parent or grandparent living in an assisted living community.  We recognize that they have had a lifetime of gifts, and as they are no longer running their own household, they not only do not need as much but have a limited amount of space.

One suggestion is to give them a blanket or throw as seniors often suffer from the cold.  However, if you want to personalize your gift, there are several companies that will create a cozy throw using one of your family photos.  A talking photo album also lets you create memories through family pictures and when it has recorded voices of the grandkids, it is really special.

Another idea is to give them a lap desk that allows them to easily read a book or to write a letter from the comfort of their chair.  You could add a couple of adult coloring books illustrated with things they enjoy or places they have been along with some colored pencils and markers to complete your gift.

A personalized gift basket can be filled with all kinds of things such as their favorite soaps, lotions and perfumes or colognes.  You can also fill a basket with special treats including chocolates, cookies and a small plug-in teapot and tea bags, or do one up with slippers, grippy socks, and a couple of pairs of fashionable compression socks.

Furthermore, tablets and iPads make good gifts for either a new user or as a replacement for an outdated model.  Their touch-screen technology and large print options make them easy for seniors to use.  If your parent is not tech savvy, set up the tablet before you give it to them with their email address, facebook page and other personal items.  It may be fun to pre-load a few games that you think they would enjoy and add some photos of the family.  Add to the gift the offer to be their “tech support” if they have any problems.

Is Your Brain Working as Efficiently as It Did When You Were Younger?

July 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

If you are looking for luxury assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, MorningStar may be your answer. Assisted Living Can be a Healthier, Safer Option for Many Older Adults

July 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Most older adults wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and that is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second-floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health issues.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

If you are looking for exceptional senior living in Santa Fe, NM, MorningStar may be your answer. Our beautiful community has 56 assisted living suites offering residents’ peace of mind knowing compassionate help is readily available whenever they need it. We also have 29 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please see our website for more information about MorningStar of Santa Fe.

Why You Should Consider the Relationship Between Food and Cognitive Health

June 26, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

It’s no secret that what we eat has a lot to do with our health. But did you know that eating certain foods can impact our brain health and memory? It is especially important for anyone age 55 and up to start taking your cognitive health seriously. Keep reading to understand why assisted living communities are highly considering the relationship between food and cognitive health. Senior living executive chefs can also offer which foods are best to support brain function and memory as you age.

Omega 3’s and Brain Health

Omega 3’ fatty acids are said to be one of the most important nutrients for brain health. Since humans cannot naturally make omega 3’s, we have to obtain this through the foods we eat. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are some of the best foods for those with Alzheimer’s. These types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to improved brain health and cognitive function. These essential fatty acids play a vital role in building and maintaining brain cell membranes and may even reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

For those that don’t eat fish, there are some other food choices that contain omega 3’s. Walnuts, flax seed meal, chia seeds, and soy milk are other great sources of omega 3’s and can offer even more added benefits for seniors, like added fiber and protein.

Reducing Inflammation

Berries are another essential food group for those wishing to improve their brain health. Blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are rich in antioxidants that protect the brain from damage and inflammation. These powerful antioxidants help to remove toxins from the brain, which may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The Benefits of an Assisted Living Community

June 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Way too often people have misconceptions about assisted living communities. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar of Albuquerque, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Stretch and Strength, Let’s Get Moving, Baking Club, Flower Arranging, Pictionary, Music Trivia, Zoo Outing and more. Seniors also find it easier to eat healthily as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason assisted living can make sense is seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are available around-the-clock to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate daily help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

Moving Into Assisted Living as a Couple Offers Many Benefits

June 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Growing older together can make couples feel like they are as familiar with their own needs as they are with their spouse’s. They are used to relying on one another for companionship as well as emotional support, which is why experts say moving into assisted living together can be beneficial on several levels.

To start with, it helps make the transition to community life easier. Alyssa M. Lanzi, a research assistant professor in the department of communication sciences and disorders at the University of Delaware in Newark, says, “Assisted living communities can be great for couples that are looking to continue to live together while needing some support for daily activities.”

Given the fact many senior living communities offer various levels of care services, even if a couple is on a different health track, their needs can be addressed with separate personalized care plans. It also eliminates the need to fund two homes. Additionally, if one of the partners is in good health, they can always move if their spouse passes away or requires something like specialized memory care.

Studies show in many cases couples who move together say they wished they had done it sooner. They report enjoying the community’s social interactions and the peace of mind that comes knowing someone is around to lend a hand when needed. If one of the couple is more physically or cognitively healthy, they can relax knowing their loved one is being taken care of.

Moving earlier rather than later helps to maintain the couple’s quality of life and may provide a healthier lifestyle. Wellness programs, activities, nutritious meals and medication management offered often help prevent or slow further decline.

If you are looking for outstanding senior housing in Santa Fe, NM, MorningStar may be your answer. Which Assisted Living Community Is the Best Fit for You or a Loved One?

June 21, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

A US News & World Report article discusses how to determine which assisted living community would be the best fit for you or a loved one. They explain that while there may be similarities between communities, upon closer scrutiny, each one will most likely have its own strengths and weaknesses. It is also a good idea to take into account things like personal preferences and location; and you may find it helpful to take a look at the checklist provided in the article.

To begin narrowing down the various communities, visit their websites to get answers to commonly asked questions. From there you can call to inquire about availability and pricing, and if the place sounds good, go ahead and book an in-person tour. While at the community, make the effort to speak to as many people as possible. Try to be there during an activity to see how engaged residents are, and join the group for lunch if you have the opportunity.

Furthermore, this is a good time to discuss the range of senior care options to determine if they can provide the level of care you need. Ask about policies regarding joining the community and what happens if it doesn’t work out. If there is a daily calendar of activities and events, ask for a copy. You will also want to know if they provide transportation for doctor’s appointments and other errands. If you do eat a meal, what did you think of the quality? Another thing to pay attention to is the cleanliness and smell of the community.

As mentioned earlier, location is important. Is the community convenient for your family and friends and close to your doctors and other personal services? When visitors do come, is there adequate parking? Is there a relaxing spot to sit outside when the weather is nice?

Now consider personal preferences. Does the size of the community matter to you? How does the list of amenities stack up to things you are interested in doing? For example, is an onsite salon important or do you enjoy spending time outdoors?  Would you like to attend services at an onsite chapel?

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we offer senior living on Santa Fe, NM’s west side with mountain views and close to medical facilities, shopping and other services. Assisted living suites are available in a variety of contemporary floorplans featuring high ceilings, large windows, handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. We provide residents comprehensive care services along with luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities to enhance quality of life. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, we offer compassionate, all-inclusive care in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Is it Time to Consider Assisted Living?

May 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If a parent or other loved one is starting to slow down and would welcome assistance with personal daily care or has mobility issues requiring major renovations to their existing home, it may be time to think about assisted living. While there may be several communities to choose from, it is useful to have some insight into your parents’ needs when evaluating assisted living communities.

A Place for Mom, an Internet referral service, explains a good place to start is to “compare factors like staff friendliness, amenities, and overall culture.” If you plan to do a virtual tour or onsite visit, come prepared with a list of questions regarding costs, care plans, amenities, programming, and general lifestyle and culture.

During your visit, observe residents. Do they seem engaged, happy? Are they encouraged to participate in activities and events? Ask to see the community’s calendar of activities. If mom or dad loves to play bridge, does the community have a game room and a bridge club? If mom or dad is no longer driving, does the community offer scheduled transportation to doctor visits and other appointments? Do they do outside trips to area shopping and local parks?

Remember your loved one’s suite is where they will sleep but the community is where they will live.  Are the common rooms inviting? How about the outdoor areas? Is there a nice courtyard or terrace where they can sit and relax on a nice day? If mom or dad enjoys a glass of wine before dinner, is it available? Other things to ask about include the meal service, the community’s ability to meet both present and future care needs and how emergencies are handled.

MorningStar of Albuquerque is a senior community designed from the ground up to meet the needs of residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Our beautiful community offers assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. MorningStar Offers Memory Care in Albuquerque

April 17, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

While there is not a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, it is important to provide the person with the proper level of care.  Along with assisted living, Albuquerque, NM’s MorningStar community offers compassionate memory care. Our Reflections Neighborhood has the amenities and services to ensure the comfort, safety and wellbeing of our most tender residents.

As dementia care specialists, our approach and philosophy to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  All team members, regardless of their position, receive Lavender Sky training, which includes a deeper understanding of the disease and communication techniques to use with memory-impaired residents.  It also includes training in environmental safety and security as well as holistic solutions to challenging behaviors.

An important aspect of our program is to provide plenty of recreational and purposeful activities such as music, life skills, art, entertainers and exercise.  To ensure our residents’ safety and well-being, services include daily health monitoring and around-the-clock staffing as well as a secure courtyard reserved just for memory care residents.

Mealtimes in the Reflections Neighborhood are as much about Community as they are about Nutrition, with residents and team members eating together.  Family style meals allow team members to encourage residents’ appetites as well as to provide any needed assistance with eating.  In addition, much of our food is modified out of respect for some of our residents’ compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Also, bear in mind that we accept residents in the earliest stage of the disease right through to those in more advanced phases that require the highest level of care.  Furthermore, everything we do is in a loving environment that affirms the dignity and value of the individual.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar of Albuquerque.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Senior Communities Offer a Broad Range of Amenities and Services

April 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as yard work and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many senior communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As an assisted living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services senior communities provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, salon, theater, fitness room, library, fireside patio, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle for residents. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest assisted living Albuquerque, NM offers.  Please contact us to learn why MorningStar of Albuquerque is such a great place to call home.

How to Choose an Assisted Living Community for a Parent

March 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

It is never easy for children of elderly parents to come to terms with their parent’s aging. This is especially true if they have been showing signs of immobility or cognitive decline. Watching parents struggle is extremely emotional and disheartening. We rely on our parents and see them as strong and independent, so when the time comes to consider affordable assisted living options for seniors, MorningStar’s best rated senior living will be there to guide you every step of the way.

Assessing Your Parent’s Needs

When deciding on an assisted living community for a parent, it’s important to consider what needs your parent currently has and how they might change in the future. Depending on any health diagnosis, you may be able to calculate what care they may require throughout the years. This is why assisted living communities that offer a continuum of care are best for seniors with changing needs.

Making the Decision

Once you have assessed your parents’ needs and know what they will require for the best senior living experience, you can then consider the following for the best fit:

Amenities and Services

All inclusive assisted living should offer the same if not similar, amenities and services as independent senior living communities. This means seniors should have access to all the things that make life fun. Exercise classes, theatre rooms, on-site salon, and dining should be easily accessible to seniors in assisted living.

Safety and Security

Safety and security are of utmost importance when a parent needs extra care and attention. While no senior should feel trapped, assisted living communities should be secured, kept clean, and tightly managed to prevent accidents.

Are You Considering an Assisted Living Community?

March 27, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

According to the US Census Bureau’s statistics, there were an estimated 56 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 16.8% of the nation’s population as of 2021. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, “Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors?  What type of onsite amenities would you desire?  A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we offer assisted living along with memory care.  As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Aging in Place Depends on a Variety of Factors

March 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

To safely age in place, seniors need to be somewhere that supports their independence, health, and security whether it is their own home or a senior community designed to meet their needs. The decision on where and how a person lives depends on a variety of factors including any physical conditions limiting their mobility. Another thing affecting a person’s well-being is dealing with a disease such as Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.

It is beneficial to evaluate your current home to see if it will work for you in the future; or would your needs be better served somewhere like an assisted living community? If you have mobility issues and your present living situation requires modifications to make it safe, keep in mind those changes can be expensive as well as affect the value of the home when you do sell. Problem areas include stairs, narrow doorways and poorly lit areas that increase the risk of a dangerous fall.

Additionally, if you live alone, how far away are family members or friends you can count on if you need help. Are you comfortable with an in-home service to assist you with tasks that are difficult to do on your own such as bathing or preparing food?

Other important considerations of aging in place include the upkeep of a home. Are you responsible for the maintenance inside and out? Also, do you still drive, and how far away is shopping and your medical care?

If you do have chronic health conditions, it makes sense to plan for changing needs. In some cases, a person may choose to move into an assisted living community even if they currently do not need help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). This way they are already familiar with the residents and staff and have peace of mind knowing help will be there when they need it. For assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, we encourage you to learn more about MorningStar, located on the northeast side of town between Paseo del Norte and Palomas.

Why Eating Breakfast is Good for Us

March 20, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Growing up, most of our mothers told us it wasn’t healthy to skip breakfast. While we listened, many of us still went off to school without eating anything. Based on current research, it turns out our mother’s advice was right again, and eating breakfast is good for us for several reasons.

Registered Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade explains when we eat a healthy breakfast upon rising in the morning; it helps regulate our appetite for the rest of the day. If we break our nightly fast with a good meal, we are less likely to indulge in sugary or fat-laden food later in the morning. A healthy breakfast also helps to prevent blood sugar highs and lows and Palinski-Wade says this is important for diabetics as well as the rest of us.

While many breakfast foods such as cereal, baked goods, and granola bars are high in sugar and refined grains, experts say we should refuel our body each morning with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Protein makes us feel fuller and keeps us from snacking later on unhealthy foods. Eggs, yogurt, sausage, and peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast are good sources of protein. Fiber helps our digestive system work well and is found in oatmeal and whole grain cereals. Many meals can be partly prepared the night before to make your morning routine easier.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide a lifestyle that focuses on wellness, comfort and community. Assisted living residents receive a whole range of services and amenities including beautifully prepared, nutritious meals served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room. Other services include 24/7 care managers, certified medication care managers, scheduled health & wellness evaluations and access to a licensed nurse. Assisted Living Communities Are Designed to Address Many Needs

March 06, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As people grow older, their needs change and many require help with daily personal care activities.  This can present a dilemma in families as some elderly seniors firmly state that they do not want to move into an assisted living community.  However, when the pressure to assume caretaking responsibilities continues to grow for family members and even safety is a concern, they may have to consider alternatives.

It is important to know that research shows assisted living can be a healthier lifestyle for seniors than living alone.  They have access to 24/7 care as well as the benefits that come from socializing with others.  In addition, keep in mind that your parent’s home may need costly modifications to make it safe for them to continue to live there while assisted living communities are designed to address those needs.  Moreover, along with the assistance they need with daily personal care, communities such as MorningStar of Albuquerque provide a range of wellness programs and activities that support residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing.

In addition, wholesome, nutritional daily meals as well as housekeeping and laundry services mean your parents will have their basic needs met seamlessly.  One often overlooked benefit of assisted living is that with proper assistance, rather than your parent’s fear of losing their independence becoming true, they will actually get it back.  Also, by getting the needed assistance from the staff, it allows families to just enjoy spending time together without the added responsibility of being caregivers.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our carefree lifestyle provides a chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy precious retirement years. Our stylish suites are available in a range of floor plans and only require furnishings and personal items to make it feel like home.  For residents’ safety, all suites are equipped with emergency call systems and handicap-accessible bathrooms.  Contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.
