Change Unhealthy Habits for Better Cognitive Health

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6½ hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scan, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

Understanding and Preventing Dementia in Seniors

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

Dementia is a collective term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline, such as forgetfulness. It significantly affects a person’s daily life, but there are ways to manage and possibly prevent its onset. For residents in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, understanding dementia is the first step towards prevention and ensuring a quality life.

1. Engage in Regular Physical Activity

Physical exercise is not only good for the heart but also for the brain. Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can help to prevent dementia. Many senior living Phoenix and retirement communities Phoenix offer fitness programs tailored to seniors, providing safe and enjoyable ways to stay active.

2. Maintain a Healthy Diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can benefit brain health and possibly prevent dementia. Foods high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial. Dining services in assisted living Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix often focus on nutritious meal plans that support cognitive health.

3. Keep Your Mind Active

Mental stimulation can help to keep the brain active and reduce the risk of dementia. Activities like reading, solving puzzles, playing musical instruments, or learning a new skill can stimulate the brain. Memory care Phoenix facilities incorporate a variety of cognitive activities into their daily programs to support brain health.

4. Stay Socially Connected

Social interaction helps prevent dementia by keeping the mind engaged. Joining clubs, attending social events, and even simple daily interactions can make a significant difference. Assisted living Phoenix and senior living Phoenix communities provide numerous opportunities for residents to connect with others, fostering a sense of belonging and mental engagement.

5. Regular Health Check-Ups

Managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol is crucial in preventing dementia. Regular check-ups can help in managing these conditions effectively. Retirement communities Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix often have on-site health services or partnerships with local healthcare providers to ensure residents receive comprehensive care.

6. Quality Sleep

Good sleep hygiene is essential for brain health. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful sleeping environment can improve sleep quality. Memory care Phoenix facilities emphasize the importance of sleep in their care routines, recognizing its role in cognitive function.

Understanding and preventing dementia involves a multifaceted approach focusing on physical health, mental activity, social engagement, and proper medical care. For those in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, adopting these strategies can contribute to a reduced risk of dementia and promote overall well-being in senior years.

Popular Assisted Living Wellness Programs

April 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Holistic wellness programs in assisted living communities encourage healthy and happy lifestyles in seniors. Active senior living communities understand the priority of connection and involvement, which is why MorningStar Senior Living offers specialized wellness programs for seniors in assisted living that are thoroughly planned by our dedicated Life Enrichment Teams.

MorningStar’s Life Enrichment Teams plan creative ways for seniors to tap into their unique talents and experiences. Some residents choose to lead special interest clubs themselves. On top of the programs MorningStar Senior Living has to offer, there are also the following popular assisted living wellness programs that combat loneliness and isolation in seniors:

Fitness classes

Having access to physical movement, no matter how small, is extremely beneficial for seniors. Even if a senior struggles with decreased mobility, assisted living wellness programs can still help these residents move their bodies. Gentle stretching, short walks, and water aerobics are just some of the low-impact workouts for seniors in assisted living to enjoy.

Healthy dining options

When seniors struggle to care for themselves, it is often their eating habits that take a turn for the worst first. Having healthy dining options available for seniors in assisted living is crucial in supporting overall wellness. Diets also alter as we age, and senior living dining should offer modified menus and recipes to accommodate changing needs and tastes.

Relaxation therapies

Even in retirement seniors can experience anxiety and distress. Especially if they are dealing with worries about their health, family, or adjusting to a new senior living community. Relaxation therapies like music therapy, crafting, and animal therapy are all innovative approaches to help seniors feel more involved and relaxed in assisted living.

Falls in the Elderly

March 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

A fall can result in serious injuries especially for the elderly, who make up most cases, and can take a long time to heal.  Many even lead to permanent mobility issues that limit the person’s freedom.  The CDC reports that each year 3 million older adults are treated in the emergency room for a fall injury and over 800,000 patients are hospitalized due to their injuries.

Experts explain there are several reasons why the elderly are more vulnerable to falling and include medical conditions such as Parkinson’s and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, diabetes, and blood pressure fluctuations.  In addition, physical disabilities that affect strength and balance, poor eyesight, inner ear problems, and dehydration can also put a person more at risk for a fall.  Common situations that can result in a fall include wet or recently polished floors, poorly lit areas, rugs not properly secured, stairs, and uneven sidewalks.

There are some changes you can make to fall-proof your home such replacing light bulbs in dimly lit hallways or stairways with higher wattage bulbs.  Clean up clutter and make sure each room in your home has a clear, clean path to walk through and install grab bars and handrails where needed.  Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or shower and do not wear socks or loose, floppy slippers but rather a good walking shoe with support and cushioning.

If a loved one is unsteady on their feet, talk to their doctor about using a walker or cane.  Also, ask if any of their medications can cause dizziness or light-headedness, and if so, is there an alternative.  Doctors say if not, it is even more important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we offer residents comfort, security, and built-in companionship. Our beautiful home has suites in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities, wellness programs, activities and care services. Our residents’ safety is important to us, and each suite is equipped with a handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. How to Choose an Assisted Living Community for a Parent

March 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

It is never easy for children of elderly parents to come to terms with their parent’s aging. This is especially true if they have been showing signs of immobility or cognitive decline. Watching parents struggle is extremely emotional and disheartening. We rely on our parents and see them as strong and independent, so when the time comes to consider affordable assisted living options for seniors, MorningStar’s best rated senior living will be there to guide you every step of the way.

Assessing Your Parent’s Needs

When deciding on an assisted living community for a parent, it’s important to consider what needs your parent currently has and how they might change in the future. Depending on any health diagnosis, you may be able to calculate what care they may require throughout the years. This is why assisted living communities that offer a continuum of care are best for seniors with changing needs.

Making the Decision

Once you have assessed your parents’ needs and know what they will require for the best senior living experience, you can then consider the following for the best fit:

Amenities and Services

All inclusive assisted living should offer the same if not similar, amenities and services as independent senior living communities. This means seniors should have access to all the things that make life fun. Exercise classes, theatre rooms, on-site salon, and dining should be easily accessible to seniors in assisted living.

Safety and Security

Safety and security are of utmost importance when a parent needs extra care and attention. While no senior should feel trapped, assisted living communities should be secured, kept clean, and tightly managed to prevent accidents.

Senior Nutrition: Adapting Your Diet for Heart Health

March 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in retirement communities

Heart health is a primary concern for seniors, with dietary habits playing a crucial role in maintaining cardiovascular wellness. For residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, adapting dietary habits can be a significant step towards enhancing heart health. Here are key dietary adjustments that can help seniors support their heart health effectively.

1. Emphasize Fruits and Vegetables

Incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into the diet is essential for heart health. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help reduce blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease. Senior living Phoenix communities often offer menus with a wide range of fruits and vegetables, ensuring residents get the nutrients they need.

2. Choose Whole Grains

Whole grains are an excellent source of fiber, which can help improve blood cholesterol levels and make you feel full, aiding in weight management. Options like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread are staples in the diets provided by assisted living Phoenix and similar settings, helping seniors enjoy the benefits of whole grains every day.

3. Opt for Lean Protein Sources

Incorporating lean protein sources, such as poultry, fish, beans, and nuts, can support heart health by providing the necessary nutrients without the extra saturated fat found in red meat. Facilities in memory care Phoenix often prepare meals with these protein sources, offering delicious and heart-healthy options to their residents.

4. Limit Sodium Intake

High sodium intake is linked to increased blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease. Seniors are encouraged to limit their sodium intake by choosing low-sodium or no-salt-added products. Retirement communities Phoenix are mindful of this, seasoning foods with herbs and spices instead of salt to enhance flavor without compromising heart health.

5. Reduce Saturated and Trans Fats

Saturated and trans fats can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Seniors should aim to reduce their intake of these fats by choosing foods with healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, and fatty fish. Senior apartments Phoenix and other senior communities often use these healthier fats in meal preparation, supporting residents’ heart health.

6. Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration is crucial for overall health, including heart health. Drinking water instead of sugary or caffeinated beverages can help manage calories and support cardiovascular function. Communities across assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix encourage regular hydration throughout the day.

Adapting dietary habits for heart health is a powerful tool for seniors looking to improve their cardiovascular wellness. By focusing on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and reducing sodium and unhealthy fats, residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix can take proactive steps toward a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Are You Considering an Assisted Living Community?

March 27, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

According to the US Census Bureau’s statistics, there were an estimated 56 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 16.8% of the nation’s population as of 2021. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, “Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors?  What type of onsite amenities would you desire?  A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we offer assisted living along with memory care.  As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Please visit our website to learn more about luxury assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

Travel Tips for Seniors: Exploring the World Safely

March 27, 2024 by MS Arcadia in retirement communities

Traveling can be one of the most enriching experiences, offering new sights, cultures, and memories. For seniors, especially those from assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, exploring the world safely is paramount to ensure a fulfilling and hassle-free adventure. Here are essential travel tips designed to assist seniors in making the most of their journeys while prioritizing safety and comfort.

1. Comprehensive Planning is Key

Thorough planning is the first step towards a successful trip. It involves researching your destination, understanding the climate, and being aware of any travel advisories. Seniors should also ensure accommodations are senior-friendly, with easy access and necessary amenities. Detailed planning is particularly crucial for those in memory care Phoenix, as familiar and safe environments are essential.

2. Prioritize Travel Insurance

Investing in comprehensive travel insurance is non-negotiable for senior travelers. It should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. This extra layer of security is reassuring, especially for residents from assisted living Phoenix venturing far from their community’s support network.

3. Pack Smart

Packing light and efficiently can significantly enhance travel comfort. Essential items include medications, comfortable shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. Additionally, packing a list of emergency contacts, including details of senior living Phoenix or senior apartments Phoenix, is advised should you need to reach out to them.

4. Stay Medically Prepared

Seniors should have a recent health check-up before embarking on a trip and carry a sufficient supply of all medications, clearly labeled, and in their original containers. Bringing a brief medical history and details of any conditions is also wise, especially for travelers from retirement communities Phoenix who may need specific medical attention while away.

5. Embrace Technology

Leveraging technology can significantly enhance travel safety and convenience. GPS for directions, mobile apps for restaurant reservations, and digital boarding passes make traveling more accessible. Seniors from assisted living Phoenix can benefit from familiarizing themselves with these technologies before their trip.

6. Consider Group Tours

Group tours can be a great option, offering the excitement of discovery with the reassurance of a structured itinerary and the company of fellow travelers. Many tours cater specifically to seniors, providing a balanced pace and senior-centric activities.

7. Stay Hydrated and Rested

Maintaining hydration and taking regular rests can help manage energy levels and ensure seniors enjoy their travels to the fullest. Structuring itineraries with ample downtime is crucial to avoid exhaustion.

Travel opens up a world of possibilities, and age should not be a barrier to experiencing new adventures. For seniors from assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, following these travel tips can ensure they explore the world safely and comfortably, making every journey as rewarding as it is memorable.

Video call applications like Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime allow residents in memory care Phoenix and other senior communities to participate in important family moments, from birthdays to casual daily chats, bridging the distance with just a click.

Enhanced Learning Opportunities

The internet is a treasure trove of information and educational resources. This access to endless learning opportunities promotes mental stimulation and keeps the mind sharp.

Aging in Place Depends on a Variety of Factors

March 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

To safely age in place, seniors need to be somewhere that supports their independence, health, and security whether it is their own home or a senior community designed to meet their needs. The decision on where and how a person lives depends on a variety of factors including any physical conditions limiting their mobility. Another thing affecting a person’s well-being is dealing with a disease such as Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.

It is beneficial to evaluate your current home to see if it will work for you in the future; or would your needs be better served somewhere like an assisted living community? If you have mobility issues and your present living situation requires modifications to make it safe, keep in mind those changes can be expensive as well as affect the value of the home when you do sell. Problem areas include stairs, narrow doorways and poorly lit areas that increase the risk of a dangerous fall.

Additionally, if you live alone, how far away are family members or friends you can count on if you need help. Are you comfortable with an in-home service to assist you with tasks that are difficult to do on your own such as bathing or preparing food?

Other important considerations of aging in place include the upkeep of a home. Are you responsible for the maintenance inside and out? Also, do you still drive, and how far away is shopping and your medical care?

If you do have chronic health conditions, it makes sense to plan for changing needs. In some cases, a person may choose to move into an assisted living community even if they currently do not need help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). This way they are already familiar with the residents and staff and have peace of mind knowing help will be there when they need it. For assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, we encourage you to learn more about MorningStar, located on the northeast side of town between Paseo del Norte and Palomas.

MorningStar of Albuquerque is designed from the ground up to accommodate residents in beautiful surroundings. Services include help with the ADLs; all-day, restaurant-style dining; resort-style amenities; wellness programs, activities and built-in companionship. Why Eating Breakfast is Good for Us

March 20, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Growing up, most of our mothers told us it wasn’t healthy to skip breakfast. While we listened, many of us still went off to school without eating anything. Based on current research, it turns out our mother’s advice was right again, and eating breakfast is good for us for several reasons.

Registered Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade explains when we eat a healthy breakfast upon rising in the morning; it helps regulate our appetite for the rest of the day. If we break our nightly fast with a good meal, we are less likely to indulge in sugary or fat-laden food later in the morning. A healthy breakfast also helps to prevent blood sugar highs and lows and Palinski-Wade says this is important for diabetics as well as the rest of us.

While many breakfast foods such as cereal, baked goods, and granola bars are high in sugar and refined grains, experts say we should refuel our body each morning with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Protein makes us feel fuller and keeps us from snacking later on unhealthy foods. Eggs, yogurt, sausage, and peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast are good sources of protein. Fiber helps our digestive system work well and is found in oatmeal and whole grain cereals. Many meals can be partly prepared the night before to make your morning routine easier.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide a lifestyle that focuses on wellness, comfort and community. Assisted living residents receive a whole range of services and amenities including beautifully prepared, nutritious meals served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room. Possible Causes of Memory Loss

March 18, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

Many of us have been embarrassed by forgetting someone’s name when we unexpectedly run into them or missing an appointment. The Medical News Today (MNT) describes short-term memory as the brain systems involved in storing information for short periods, usually up to about 30 seconds. Short-term memory typically holds about seven pieces of information at a time. Our long-term memory is where old memories are stored.

Experts remind seniors not all problems with memory loss are caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia but rather some are age-related or caused by outside factors. One example is sleep as research shows lack of sleep interferes with short-term memory and is vital to memory consolidation, which is the process of preserving key memories and discarding excessive or irrelevant information. Drinking too much alcohol and using recreational drugs also interfere with memory consolation; and overtime can cause irreversible damage to both short and long-term memory.

Other issues that cause memory loss can be medications (check with your doctor), infections such as Lyme disease, urinary tract infections (UTI), and organ failure, such as liver failure. Even a small amount of hearing or vision loss can interfere with a person’s ability to take in and process new information. Experts say once the problem is solved such as with hearing aids, memory problems should improve.

Chronic cardiovascular problems like hypertension and high cholesterol impair blood flow to the brain, leading to a condition called vascular dementia. Depression, anxiety, chronic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder additionally have the potential to cause memory problems but typically go away once the underlying problems are resolved. For any of these various reasons, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are having memory problems as it could be treatable.

Along with assisted living, Albuquerque’s MorningStar community offers specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood caters to our most tender residents with purposeful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Assisted Living Communities Are Designed to Address Many Needs

March 06, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As people grow older, their needs change and many require help with daily personal care activities.  This can present a dilemma in families as some elderly seniors firmly state that they do not want to move into an assisted living community.  However, when the pressure to assume caretaking responsibilities continues to grow for family members and even safety is a concern, they may have to consider alternatives.

It is important to know that research shows assisted living can be a healthier lifestyle for seniors than living alone.  They have access to 24/7 care as well as the benefits that come from socializing with others.  In addition, keep in mind that your parent’s home may need costly modifications to make it safe for them to continue to live there while assisted living communities are designed to address those needs.  Moreover, along with the assistance they need with daily personal care, communities such as MorningStar of Albuquerque provide a range of wellness programs and activities that support residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing.

In addition, wholesome, nutritional daily meals as well as housekeeping and laundry services mean your parents will have their basic needs met seamlessly.  One often overlooked benefit of assisted living is that with proper assistance, rather than your parent’s fear of losing their independence becoming true, they will actually get it back.  Also, by getting the needed assistance from the staff, it allows families to just enjoy spending time together without the added responsibility of being caregivers.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our carefree lifestyle provides a chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy precious retirement years. Our stylish suites are available in a range of floor plans and only require furnishings and personal items to make it feel like home.  For residents’ safety, all suites are equipped with emergency call systems and handicap-accessible bathrooms.  Contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

Understanding and Managing Arthritis in Senior Adults

March 04, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

Arthritis is a prevalent condition that affects many senior adults, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Managing this condition effectively is crucial for maintaining a high quality of life. Seniors residing in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix have access to various resources and support systems designed to help manage arthritis symptoms. Here’s what seniors need to know about understanding and managing arthritis.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Arthritis symptoms can vary but commonly include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased range of motion. These symptoms may be more pronounced in the morning. Recognizing these signs early is essential for prompt management. Facilities specializing in senior living Phoenix and assisted living Phoenix often provide educational sessions to help residents identify and understand arthritis symptoms.

Staying Active

Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage arthritis. Exercises like walking, swimming, and tai chi can improve joint function and reduce pain. Many retirement communities Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix offer fitness programs tailored to seniors with arthritis, focusing on gentle exercises that enhance mobility without putting undue stress on the joints.

Pain Management Techniques

Various pain management techniques can help alleviate arthritis symptoms. This includes both medication and non-medication approaches such as hot and cold therapies, massage, and acupuncture. Memory care Phoenix and other senior care settings often work with healthcare providers to create personalized pain management plans for residents with arthritis.

Nutritional Support

Diet plays a significant role in managing arthritis. Anti-inflammatory foods like fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, fruits, and vegetables can help reduce joint inflammation. Nutritionists in assisted living Phoenix and senior living Phoenix can assist residents in planning meals that support joint health and overall well-being.

Access to Professional Care

Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals are crucial for monitoring arthritis and adjusting treatment plans as needed. Retirement communities Phoenix and senior apartments Phoenix facilitate access to medical care, ensuring residents receive the support they need to manage their arthritis effectively.

Adapting Living Spaces

Adapting living environments to make daily tasks easier can significantly improve the quality of life for seniors with arthritis. This may include installing grab bars in bathrooms, using ergonomic tools and utensils, and choosing furniture that provides better support. Assisted living Phoenix and memory care Phoenix are designed with these adaptations in mind, providing a comfortable and accessible living space for seniors.

Understanding and managing arthritis is essential for senior adults to maintain their independence and enjoy their golden years with minimal discomfort. Through a combination of staying active, effective pain management, nutritional support, professional care, and adapted living environments, seniors in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix can effectively manage arthritis symptoms and lead a fulfilling life.

Stretching is a Good Way to Begin Exercising

March 04, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

If you are a senior who would like to get some exercise, you may not know how to begin.  For one thing, you probably realize you are not as fit as you used to be, and are not up to the same degree of physical activity that you once did.  And of course, before you begin any new form of exercise, you will need to check with your doctor to make sure you are fit enough, especially if you have osteoporosis, an injury, or balance issues.

Once you get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, stretching is a good place to begin.  In fact, studies show that as we grow older our flexibility decreases by up to 50 percent in some joints.  Another good thing about stretching is many exercises are appropriate for any level of fitness including ones that can be done sitting in a chair.  Stretching can help you maintain your flexibility and mobility as well as loosen up some of your stiffness in your back, neck and shoulder muscles.

Another plus about stretching exercises is that most of them do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere.  The Silver Sneakers website recommends that as you stretch, “to breathe deeply, and go slowly. Listen to your body, and never force a movement that causes pain.”  They remind seniors it is okay if they cannot bend very far as over time they will loosen up some.  Safety is always important and you do not want to hurt yourself.  Other exercises especially good for seniors include chair yoga, resistance band workouts, walking, and dumbbell strength training.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our beautiful community offers a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents.  Located on the popular northeast side of town between Paseo del Norte and Palomas, we are convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services.  Contact us to learn what sets us apart from other senior living Albuquerque, NM offers and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Guide to Choosing the Right Assisted Living Facility

March 01, 2024 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Choosing the right assisted living facility is a pivotal decision for seniors and their families, aiming to ensure comfort, care, and quality of life during the golden years. Whether you’re considering assisted living Phoenix, exploring senior living Phoenix, looking into retirement communities Phoenix, evaluating senior apartments Phoenix, or researching memory care Phoenix, finding a place that meets your needs requires thoughtful consideration. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed choice.

1. Assess Your Needs

Before starting your search, assess your or your loved one’s current and future health care needs. Facilities like assisted living Phoenix offer various levels of care, from minimal assistance to more comprehensive services provided in memory care Phoenix. Understanding the specific needs will help narrow down the options to those facilities best equipped to provide the necessary support.

2. Location Matters

Consider the facility’s location. Is it important to be close to family and friends? The convenience of visiting can significantly impact the decision-making process. Many people prefer assisted living Phoenix due to its vibrant community and accessibility, ensuring residents stay connected with their loved ones.

3. Visit and Observe

There’s no substitute for visiting a facility in person. Schedule tours at senior living Phoenix and retirement communities Phoenix to get a feel for the environment. Pay attention to the cleanliness, the attitude of the staff, and the overall atmosphere. Are residents engaged in activities? Does the staff seem attentive and caring? First-hand observation is invaluable.

4. Evaluate the Amenities and Services

Amenities and services play a crucial role in daily life within these communities. From dining options to fitness centers, and from social activities to health care services, what is available? Facilities offering a wide range of amenities and services, like those found in senior apartments Phoenix, can enhance the living experience, providing both convenience and enrichment.

5. Understand the Costs

Understanding the cost structure is crucial. What is included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra? Transparency in pricing from assisted living Phoenix and similar communities ensures there are no surprises down the line. It’s also important to discuss payment options and whether the facility accepts insurance or other forms of financial assistance.

6. Read Reviews and Talk to Residents

Feedback from current residents and their families can provide insights that promotional materials cannot. Discussing their experiences can highlight the strengths and potential drawbacks of living in retirement communities Phoenix or memory care Phoenix.

Choosing the right assisted living facility is a decision that affects a senior’s well-being and happiness. By carefully considering your needs, visiting potential facilities, evaluating their offerings, understanding the costs, and seeking feedback, you can find a place that feels like home, whether it’s in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, or memory care Phoenix.
