Expert Advice to Help Prevent the Spread of Colds and the Flu

March 10, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

With lots of stories about viruses in the news every day, it is probably a good time to review some basics from experts about how to prevent spreading a cold or the flu.  To start with it is important to know how long someone is contagious.

In the case of the common cold, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention explains that different viral strains cause the symptoms of a cold, such as rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and coronaviruses.  Since each of these viruses evolves and adapt to their environment, it explains why we do not have a cure for the common cold. Experts also say that a cold typically lasts for about 10 days and that we are probably contagious for that amount of time.

Depending on the person, influenza typically last for up to 10 days.  Doctors explain a person is contagious one day before they start having symptoms and up to seven more days.  The flu affects people of all ages but some groups more severely than other such as the elderly, young children and people with compromised immune systems.

Both the common cold and the flu are highly contagious and it requires all of us to be vigilant in not passing them along to others.  There are several good habits we need to adopt, especially in cold and flu season, and they start with washing our hands frequently (alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective), to avoid touching our mouth, nose and eyes, and to avoid contact with people who are sick.  Moreover if you get sick, stay home.

At the MorningStar of Santa Fe senior living community, we help our residents and employees to all get a flu shot each year.  We also ask that if a staff member is sick, they stay home, and discourage families from visiting residents if they are sick or feel like they may be coming down with something.  MorningStar takes our responsibility to keep our residents as healthy as possible with tasty, nutrient-rich meals, wellness programs and a whole range of care services and onsite amenities.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Contact us for more information regarding unsurpassed senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Learn About MorningStar at Arcadia’s Companion Living

March 09, 2020 by MS Arcadia

While seniors have discovered the many benefits of senior living, MorningStar at Arcadia understands that for some older adults the cost may be too high to comfortably afford.  This is why we consider it part of our job to help area seniors find creative ways to make the move to assisted living possible.

One of the things we offer to make it more affordable is “Companion Living.”  Whether you wish to move into assisted living or memory care, Companion Living allows two unrelated people of the same sex to share the expense of a suite.  Furthermore, if you do not have a friend or relative to share a suite with, we will carefully pair you up with another senior who shares your interests and background.

The advantage of companion living also goes far beyond economics as companionship is important for a person’s health and wellbeing. We believe we are designed by our Creator for relationships, and that isolation can drain us of energy and purpose.  When a senior loses their life partner after being married 40, 50, or 60 years, it can be a very lonely existence and a companion can help to diminish those feelings of loneliness, and help the person to reconnect.

Offering built-in companionship, it can additionally help to ease the transition of moving into a senior living community.  Also as roommates naturally look after each other’s interests, they may be the first one to notice changes in their roomies’ health or abilities.

Please visit our website to get an idea of the various amenities and services we offer as well as to set up a tour of our beautiful Phoenix assisted living and memory care community.  We are certain MorningStar at Arcadia’s stylish suites and inviting common areas will impress you from the first but the thing we are most proud of is our dedicated, loving team.

MorningStar at Arcadia represents the best in Phoenix assisted living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. Call to schedule a tour of our exceptional community.

To Achieve the Best Health, Seniors Need a Nutrient-Rich Diet

March 09, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As people age, many find their appetites have diminished or they suffer from physical or medical conditions that make eating more difficult.  This is why the nutritional value found in the foods they do consume is important, and even today, many seniors have an “inadequate intake of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, folic acid, calcium, and niacin.”

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) advise that people over the age of 50 follow the USDA food recommendations, which should help keep older adults feeling more vital, and thus healthier.  They also point out the earlier you start eating a nutrient-rich diet, the more effective it will be later down the road. Recommendations include a daily diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. It also includes eating foods with healthy fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados.

Along with all of the other amenities and care services we provide, the MorningStar of Santa Fe senior living community is proud to offer our residents daily meals that are chocked full of the freshest ingredients.  We get much of our produce from home-grown or local high-quality producers.

Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch, and take into account seniors’ dietary restrictions.  We offer a range of choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat that allows our residents to self-manage.  MorningStar’s food service is overseen by our own Executive Chef, who welcomes resident feedback and often tailors our menus per their suggestions.

If you are looking into senior living in the Santa Fe area, and in particular assisted living, we invite you to set up a tour, and while you are here, plan to share lunch with us to experience for yourself our culinary treats.  Please visit our website’s community page or give us a call for pricing and availability or to set up your tour.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about unparalleled senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Seniors Should Limit Their Screen Time

March 08, 2020 by MS Arcadia

For years research has suggested children should have limits placed upon their daily screen time, and now a large study suggests the same may be true for older adults.   A published report from the University College London in the United Kingdom indicates that older adults who spent at least 3.5 hours a day watching television experienced a greater decline in verbal memory.  The study’s data was taken from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), which included 3,662 participants age 50 years and older.

Participants answered researchers’ questions in 2008-2009 and then again in 2014-2015 regarding the time they spent watching TV.  Afterward they were given a series of tests that measured verbal memory and fluency. Results showed adults who watch 3.5 or more hours of TV daily had an “average decline of 8–10 percent in word- and language-related memory over the 6 years the study covered. This is compared with a lower 4–5 percent average decline in those who watched fewer hours of TV per day over the same period.”   For the verbal memory tests, participants were asked to memorize and then recall lists of words within a given time. The verbal fluency tests required them to list as many examples, such as animals, they could in a given amount of time. The semantic fluency of the study’s participants did not seem to be affected.

It was noted that most of the studies involving the effects of TV watching have been done on children and little to no studies on older adults.  One of the study’s co-authors, Dr. Daisy At MorningStar at Arcadia, our mission is to provide the best senior living Phoenix has to offer, Fancourt, who works in the Department of Behavioral Science and Health says, "Much less attention has been paid to the effects of television viewing at the other end of the lifespan, despite it being hypothesized for over 25 years that watching excessive television could contribute to the development of dementia."

MorningStar at Arcadia’s goal is to provide one of the best assisted living homes Phoenix AZ offers. We have the care services residents’ need as well as a range of wellness programs and activities designed to enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage connection.  With such a broad range of activities, we are sure you will find something of interest, such as exercise classes, socials, trivia and games, arts and crafts, entertainment, outings and much more. Please call or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  Set in a loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia invites you to schedule a tour of one of the best assisted living homes Phoenix AZ offers.

As We Age, a Good Medical Team is More Important than Ever!

March 08, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If you have reached your 60s, or for some of us, even our 50s, you need to a have great team of doctors on your side.  This should include physicians with experience that has focused on health conditions common to seniors, and who are attuned to the multitude of changes that aging has on our bodies, our minds, and our lifestyle.

You also want health care providers who actually listen to you and then talk to you.  Dr. Michael Wasserman, a geriatrician and board member of the American Geriatrics Society's Health in Aging Foundation, stresses that good listening ability is the first personality trait to look for in your doctor.

If you are shopping for a new physician due to a move or other circumstances, ask friends and neighbors for a reference.  Once you call, find out if they are accepting new patients, and if not, how long is the waitlist. In addition before you make your first appointment, ask if they accept your insurance including your various Medicare plans, and if medical help is available when the office is closed.

Dr. Wasserman also cautions that a conservative approach to treating aging patients may be the best one. He explains, "You need clinicians who show a lot of caution before putting an older person on a medication, before sending him off to a specialist, before doing tests and before putting him into the hospital.”

At MorningStar of Santa Fe senior living community, we understand that the best care comes from the heart.  Our loving home promotes a lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and community and offers an array of comprehensive care services.  These include transportation to doctor appointments, routine care planning reviews, scheduled health & wellness evaluations and physician visits.  Please visit our website to learn more about pricing and availability, and while you are there, set up a tour to experience firsthand the finest senior living in Santa Fe.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please visit our website for more information on compassionate senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Assisted Living Offers Many Benefits

March 07, 2020 by MS Arcadia

As people grow older, their needs change and many require help with daily personal care activities.  This can present a dilemma in families as some elderly seniors firmly state that they do not want to move into assisted living.  However when the pressure to assume caretaking responsibilities continues to grow for family members and even safety is a concern, they may have to look into alternatives.

It is important to know that research shows assisted living can be a healthier lifestyle for seniors than living alone.  They have access to 24/7 care as well as the benefits that come from socializing with others. In addition, keep in mind that your parent’s home may need costly modifications to make it safe for them to continue to live there while assisted living communities are designed to address those needs.  Moreover, along with the assistance they need with daily personal care, communities such as MorningStar at Arcadia provide a range of wellness programs and activities that support residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, and social connections.

In addition, wholesome, nutritional daily meals as well as housekeeping and laundry services mean your parent will have their basic needs met seamlessly.  Lastly, something often overlooked regarding assisted living is that with the proper assistance, rather than your parent’s fear of losing their independence becoming true, they will actually get it back.  Also by getting the needed assistance from the staff, it allows families to just enjoy spending time together without the added responsibility of being caregivers.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s goal is to be one of the best assisted living homes Phoenix AZ has to offer. Options include 80 assisted living private suites in a variety of configurations including studio, and one and two-bedroom floor plans.  In our Reflections Neighborhood, devoted to caring for seniors suffering from memory loss due to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we have 30 secure suites. Please see our website for more information.

Learn More about MorningStar of Sparks’ Memory Care

March 05, 2020 by MS Arcadia

MorningStar of Sparks’ philosophy and approach to memory care includes our guiding principle that: whatever the extent of the memory loss, whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains.  We feel it our calling as well as our privilege to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Our individualized care starts by meeting with the senior and their family members to learn all we can about the person’s background including their vocation, talents and preferences.  Taking this information, we put together a daily routine that will be used to stimulate or calm the resident in response to their mood or the surrounding circumstances.  Throughout the senior’s stay with us, we also engage the family members as we know our services are as much for them as for the residing senior.

MorningStar’s memory care provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being, while at the same time, encourages and supports choice and independence whenever possible.  Our residents participate in daily recreational and purposeful activities that include life skills, art, music, and exercise and are included in special events and scheduled outings.

The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to permit residents the freedom to move about in spacious surroundings and include an enclosed courtyard that is reserved just for their use.  Our extensive services include around-the-clock care, daily health monitoring, a licensed nurse and a caring and devoted staff.

MorningStar is honored to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market we serve.  Our team members work to support their local chapter by donating their time, talent and treasure.  In addition, MorningStar of Sparks will participate in Alzheimer’s events including Memories in the Making, The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  Please visit our website for contact information as well as to learn more about the finest senior living Reno-Sparks has to offer.

Heart Disease is the Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.

February 16, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion state that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S.  The organization is committed to helping people lead heart healthy lives by raising awareness and spreading strategies for preventing the disease.

Some of their suggestions for prevention include small lifestyle changes such as flavoring food with spices rather than using salt as well as adopting overall healthier eating habits.  They recommend staying active (or get active) and maintaining a healthy weight. Also, to control cholesterol and blood pressure levels. If you smoke, quit and avoid secondhand smoke. If you drink alcohol, do it in moderation.  It is also important to manage stress.

Remember you are at a greater risk for heart disease if you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, are overweight or obese, and are not exercising and following a healthy diet.  Genetics may also put you at a higher risk as well as your age. If you had a father or brother with heart disease before age 55 or a mother with the disease before 65, it may indicate a family history.

The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease.  This causes the coronary arteries that carry blood to the heart to become blocked by cholesterol and plaque buildup.  Chest pains or a heart attack are a sign of a blocked artery.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, a Phoenix assisted living and memory care community, we take our residents wellbeing very seriously, which is why we serve delicious, nutritional meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients.  In addition, we have a range of wellness programs and activities that support and enhance physical, mental, and spiritual health.  Please visit our website to learn more about our beautiful community.

Practical Information Regarding Assisted Living

February 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

If you are new to the concept of assisted living, and are unsure of the difference between other senior living options including independent living, MorningStar of Santa Fe is here to help.   Not only is our staff happy to answer any questions but our extensive website helps educate potential families on what our community is all about and provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission.

To start with, assisted living offers various levels of support with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing and other support services including meals, transportation and wellness activities in a residential setting.  Independent living is for seniors who enjoy the benefits offered by community living including predictable budgeting, companionship, and activities; but do not require assistance with personal care. A nursing home is unlike assisted living as it is designed for people requiring around-the-clock nursing care.

When you visit our website, be sure to check out our FAQs found under our “Family Resources” tab.  We supply answers to many of the questions you probably have as well as a little background regarding the MorningStar Senior Living Company.  You will also find important information on how we determine your loved one’s level of care and reassurances regarding our commitment to regularly re-evaluate care plans to keep up with changing needs.

Moreover we can help residents find a primary care doctor or specialty health care providers such as Occupational Therapists or Physical Therapists. When needed, we provide transportation to doctor appointments with vehicles that accommodate walkers or wheelchairs.

Our FAQs gives a quick overview of the training our Care Managers receive, which includes an orientation program (and a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Our Medication Managers are trained Qualified Medication Administration Persons (QMAP).

This is just a sampling of what you will learn on our website, but we would also love to hear from you personally as well as help you set up a tour of our gorgeous senior living community.   For those families struggling with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, we also provide compassionate memory care.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  We invite you to give us call or visit our website to learn more about the finest senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Assisted Living May Enrich Your Life

February 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

After making the move into assisted living, many residents are surprised at how full their lives become.  And despite their fears about losing their independence by moving into an assisted living community, most are pleased to discover that by getting the assistance they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.

Our holistic approach to assisted living creates an atmosphere filled with love, care and compassion.  We also recognize that it is important for our residents to continue learning and contributing, which is why we offer such a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment.  Examples include exercise classes, crafts, games, social gatherings, outside entertainment, outings and much, much more. Independent Living at MorningStar of Sparks

February 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

MorningStar of Sparks goal is to provide the best independent and assisted living Reno or Sparks offers and we invite you to take a closer look at the many benefits of moving into an independent living community. While some seniors feel strongly about remaining in their homes after retirement, other seniors are very happy to have discovered the advantages of community living.

A senior living community provides the opportunity to say goodbye to never-ending yard work, home maintenance and housekeeping chores.  After all who wants to spend precious retirement years mowing the lawn or shoveling snow when you can use the time for more fulfilling activities?  MorningStar of Sparks provides residents with activities and programming that ensure you are never bored.  Whether you want to attend an exercise class, play cards or a board game, get a haircut, or catch a movie, independent living gives you the chance to do it all on-site.

Community living also solves another problem many seniors face - loneliness.  As we age, older adults can have difficulty getting out and about, and may be at risk for losing their social ties and more likely to develop health problems that come with loneliness.  An independent living community offers the advantage of a private apartment and the chance to socialize whenever you choose with built-in companionship.  Even if you are the type of person who values privacy, senior living offers the reassurance of having people around when you need them.

Predictable budgeting is yet one more benefit of senior living as most of your living expenses will be included in your monthly fee.  At MorningStar of Sparks that includes basic cable TV and utilities, three daily meals prepared by our Executive Chef, fitness room, onsite theatre, housekeeping and trash removal, and more.  Please visit our website for more information regarding our independent living, assisted living and memory care.  We feel privileged to provide seniors with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to learn more about the finest independent and assisted living Reno/Sparks has to offer.

Start the Year off Right by Decluttering Your Home

February 14, 2020 by MS Arcadia

According to US New & World Report, it is estimated that between 2 to 5% of the population are hoarders.  While most of us are just guilty of accumulating too much “stuff,” there is no time like the present to tackle all the extra clutter that has started to overwhelm us.  Seniors also need to declutter as too much stuff clogging up hallways and passageways can be a safety hazard and result in falls, which can cause serious injuries or even fatalities.

Organizing experts have some tips to help you get started and suggest beginning at a place that will make a big impact.  For instance if a table by the front door that acts as a catch-all is spilling over with stuff, decluttering it will give you a good feeling every time you walk in the house.  Once you tackled that area, you need to keep going. If you like, set a goal that you will do a little bit each day until you are done.

Now that the hall table is cleared, professional organizers say to continue clearing other visible surfaces like countertops and desktops, tops of dressers and tables, floor space, etc.  Put things away where they belong and have trash bags and appropriate containers ready for charity items. And once you declutter an area, treat it as a “clutter free” zone.

As you go in deeper to the inside of cupboards and closets, be firm about getting get rid of some things.   Also don’t overlook the big items in your home including furniture and rarely used toys or electronics taking up space.  Take time to evaluate each room and visualize how you want it to look when you are done. Ask hard questions like, “do you really love the item or can you live without it?”

How MorningStar at Arcadia Determines Monthly Costs

February 14, 2020 by MS Arcadia

If you are considering assisted living, you will want to know how the monthly fee is determined.  At MorningStar at Arcadia, our assisted living residents pay a monthly fee based on their accommodations as well as their level of care.

Within our 80 bright suites, we offer a range of configurations that include spacious studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (including penthouse suites) and priced accordingly.  Your level of care (we offer five) is determined after you and your family meets with our Wellness Director to discuss your medical needs.  From there, we create a personalized care plan based on your medical history and daily needs.  Your care plan is routinely reviewed and updated as needed.

We are also proud to offer MorningStar’s assisted living communities our Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for more coordinated, efficient care.  The central, mobile solution offers assessments, care planning, incident tracking, wound care, behavior management and eMARs (electronic medication administration records).

We feel that the EHR system benefits both our team and residents by providing quick and secure access to accurate, complete demographic and medical information on residents.  In addition, the documentation offers enhanced privacy and security of residents’ medical data.

Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 30 secure suites dedicated to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.  For memory care, we charge an all-inclusive fee that wraps the suite rental and care (whatever the level of need) into one price. Having a Purpose in Life May Help Us Live Longer

February 13, 2020 by MS Arcadia

There are several studies that suggest a purposeful life is associated with better physical and mental health and an overall improvement in quality of life.  Seniors age 65 years and older who report having a purpose in life and tangible goals appear to have an increased life span, lower risk of disease, better sleep and healthier outcomes for stroke incidence, post-stroke quality of life, depression and diabetes.

Evidence comes from several long-term studies including The Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which collected data, including information from U.S. adults age 51 to 61 regarding life purpose and other psychological well-being constructs for almost 30 years.  The recently published conclusion and relevance report states “a stronger purpose in life was associated with decreased mortality and that purposeful living may have health benefits.”  Researchers suggest future studies focus on evaluating the association of life purpose interventions with health outcomes, including mortality, to seek more knowledge on how life purpose influences health outcomes.

Another national study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed the functioning grip strength and walking speed in participants age 50 years and older.   Study participants that reported a higher sense of purpose in life were found to have better walking speeds even after researchers controlled for preexisting health conditions, depression and health behaviors.  Authors of the study report their findings suggest that “sense of purpose, a modifiable factor, may play an important role in maintaining physical function among older adults.”

At the gorgeous MorningStar of Santa Fe senior living community, we recognize the importance of our residents living meaningful lives.  Our wellness programs focus on mental, physical, spiritual and social connections and give our residents something to look forward to each day.  In fact we take any excuse to have a good time, be it celebrating a holiday or a birthday as residents and team members love having a good time.
