Bruising Tends to Be More Common in Older Adults

As we age, many seniors discover new bruises on their body but have no memory of how they got there. The Medical News Today (MNT) explains this may be the result of the skin thinning and blood vessels weakening and/or that some people are just more prone to bruising. It can also run in families. Being a frequent, extreme bruiser includes having many bruises without remembering their cause; regularly developing bruises that take many weeks to heal and bleeding for longer than 10 minutes following an injury.

Excessive bruising and bleeding can be from medications, many of which seniors routinely take. These include drugs like warfarin, heparin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, apixaban and aspirin. Doctors say even certain herbal remedies such as ginkgo biloba, ginseng, feverfew, large quantities of garlic, ginger, and willow bark can increase the risk of bleeding or cause a change to blood vessels. The same is true for drugs like corticosteroids and glucocorticoids of which one example is prednisone.  

MNT reports liver disease is also associated with excessive bruising. “As the disease progresses, the liver may stop producing the proteins that help the blood clot. As a result, a person may experience excessive bleeding and easy bruising.” Other blood disorders and diseases such as hemophilia, senile purpura, or even vitamin deficiencies can include bruising as a symptom. Experts say consult your healthcare provider if you suddenly begin bruising more easily, have symptoms such as yellow skin, fever and low energy, taking medication and begin bruising, or getting painful bruises that are slow to heal.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains while you may be unsure on how to best approach the issue, these changes could be a sign of a significant health concern. They offer the following advice on how to sort through the changes. 

The first thing is to think about what is causing your concern and how out of the norm is it for the person? Then consider what else may be going on in the person’s life such as changes in their physical health or other stress factors that could impact their mental state. Remember depression and diabetes can cause changes in a person’s mental acuity. 

Now take a look at the Alzheimer’s Association’s 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementia diseases. Do these common signs seem to be in line with the type of things you are worrying about? If they do, you may want to enlist some help from other trusted family members or friends.

Start by asking them if they too have noticed any changes in the person’s behavior. If there is an agreement on something being amiss, experts say it is best if one or two people are selected for the task of discussing the problem with the person as a crowd may be too threatening.

Good conversation starters can be something like, “I have noticed some changes in you, is everything okay?,” or use a specific example of something troubling you have noticed the person doing. Offer to go to the doctor’s with the person; and if the first talk is not productive, try again. Keep in mind, the Alzheimer’s Association’s website has a lot of resources and support so take advantage of the help.

How to Keep Your Glasses and Lenses in Top Shape

Traditional Medicare Does Not Cover Some Services and Medical Devices

Many seniors new to Medicare have questions about the scope of coverage under the program. Experts explain traditional Medicare covers most health care needs including hospital care, doctor visits and lab tests. However, some services and medical devices are not covered.

While Medicare covers treatment and doctor visits regarding medical problems in the ears; many seniors are surprised to learn it does not cover hearing aids. In 2017 a bill was passed that allows hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter without a prescription for people with mild to moderate hearing loss; greatly reducing the cost.

Eye exams, glasses and contact lenses are also not covered under traditional Medicare. Medicare does cover things like cataract surgery and other medical conditions of the eye. If you are concerned about the cost of glasses and exams, vision insurance is available. The same goes for most dental care, and there are additional plans out there to help cover the cost of dental work. 

If you travel out of the country, you need to know Medicare will not cover any of your medical care. Travelers may purchase a Medigap policy that covers certain overseas medical costs; or check into travel insurance policies offering basic health care. Some seniors opt to pay upfront for emergency medical evacuation insurance. 

Other types of services not covered by Medicare are podiatry, massage therapy and chiropractic care. While short-term rehabilitation services are covered, Medicare does not cover long-term care in a nursing home.

Most of us grew up thinking a little sunburn was no big deal. A pink nose after a day outside? Just part of summer. But the truth is, what we thought we knew about skin cancer back then doesn’t always match what we know now. And even today, plenty of myths stick around that can get in the way of staying healthy in assisted living Phoenix.

Let’s clear up a few of the most common misunderstandings.

Myth #1: If it doesn’t hurt, it’s nothing to worry about

Skin cancer often starts quietly. Most of the time, it doesn’t hurt. There’s no sting or burning. You might just notice a new bump, a mole that looks different, or a patch that never seems to heal. Even if it feels harmless, it’s worth having a doctor take a look.

Myth #2: I’m not in the sun enough for it to matter

Pacemakers Regulate Heart Rate and Rhythm

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the most common reason for a pacemaker is when the heart beats too slowly (bradycardia), or it pauses, causing fainting spells or other symptoms. The device also prevents or treats a too fast or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia). For patients with heart failure, a pacemaker is used to help the heart chambers beat in sync, and enable the heart to pump blood more efficiently.

Pacemakers use low-energy, electrical pulses to control the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat, and the type of pacemaker you get depends on your situation. A traditional pacemaker sends electrical pulses through wires (or leads). It is placed in the chest or abdomen; and wires are connected to electrodes inside one to three heart chambers. This type of pacemaker includes single- and double-lead pacemakers, or biventricular pacemakers also known as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices.

A newer version of the pacemaker is a wireless pacemaker without wires, which is about the size of a large pill capsule. It is placed inside a chamber of your heart through a small tube inserted in one of your veins and doesn’t require surgery. The device sends pulses to the right ventricle. Typically the battery life of a pacemaker is between 8 and 13 years.

After the procedure, most patients spend a night in the hospital so doctors can make sure the device is staying in place, doing its job, and is programmed correctly. You will be given a card with information regarding the device’s settings and the hospital where you got it, which needs to be always carried with you.  

Once home, restrictions include not lifting heavy items or putting your arms over your head to avoid shifting the device or the wires. Your medical team will schedule a check-up over the next few weeks. 

Living with a pacemaker includes avoiding close contact (at least 6” away) with devices having strong magnetic fields as they can disrupt your pacemaker. When using your cell phone, put it on speaker phone or hold it to the ear on the other side of your body from your device. Don’t put it in your shirt pocket. Household items like microwaves, electric blankets, and heating pads are usually safe if they are working properly. The risks of airport screening are low, but show your pacemaker card to be individually screened. Contact your doctor with questions and problems, and if you think your pacemaker has stopped working, contact them immediately.

Best of all, many effective stretches can be done in the comfort of your home, either seated or standing — no fancy equipment needed.

Here are a few easy stretching exercises seniors in assisted living can safely incorporate into their routine:

1. Neck Stretch

This simple stretch helps relieve tension and increase range of motion in the neck and shoulders.

How to do it: Sit comfortably in a chair. Slowly tilt your head toward one shoulder, hold for 10–15 seconds, and then repeat on the other side. Do 2–3 repetitions on each side.

2. Shoulder Rolls

Great for loosening up tight shoulders and improving posture.

How to do it: Sit or stand with arms relaxed at your sides. Roll your shoulders forward in a circular motion 10 times, then reverse and roll backward 10 times.

3. Seated Forward Bend

This stretch targets the lower back and hamstrings and can be done from a sturdy chair.

How to do it: Sit near the edge of the chair with feet flat on the floor. Slowly bend forward from the waist, reaching your hands toward your toes. Hold for 15–20 seconds and return to an upright position. Repeat 2–3 times.

4. Ankle Circles

How to do it: While seated, lift one foot slightly off the ground and slowly rotate your ankle in circles — 10 times clockwise, then 10 times counterclockwise. Switch to the other foot.

5. Side Stretch

How to do it: Stand or sit with your arms at your sides. Raise one arm overhead and gently lean to the opposite side, keeping your hips and feet in place. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat on the other side.
