Foods That Support Cardiovascular Health

September 24, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

A study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology reports certain foods including many of the things we would not want to live without, such as chocolate and coffee, may help lower blood pressure. A type of flavonoid called Flavan-3-ols, a plant-based compound in cocoa and coffee beans as well as apples, grapes and teas are found to be effective at improving endothelial function, which can significantly influence blood pressure.

Medical News Today says endothelium is a thin layer of cells lining the blood vessels, and its elasticity or stiffness plays a role in effecting how well the arteries maintain normal blood pressure, and keep nutrients in and toxins out. Cardiologist Jayne Morgan, MD. of Hello Heart, says it also reduces platelet adhesion and subsequent clot formation, and aids in response to injury. Endothelial function “is measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), and even a small increase in FMD (about 1%) can reduce cardiovascular disease risk by 8–13%.”

Dark chocolate is the best type of chocolate to get Flavan-3-ols and should contain 70 percent or more cocoa and minimally added sugar or natural sweeteners like coconut sugar. Green tea and black teas are better than flavored teas as processing can damage or remove the compound. Research has shown Sencha, a popular Japanese green tea, is rich in catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which have vasodilatory effects. These catechins can help relax and widen blood vessels, potentially reducing blood pressure.

Other foods that may help support cardiovascular health are curcumin found in turmeric; resveratrol, found in grapes; garlic extract; and quercetin, found in apples, red wine, berries and onions. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flaxseed, walnuts, and some other seeds are also being studied. Doctors advise that ‘natural’ does not equal ‘safe’. Some food containing blood pressure reducing properties can interfere with anticoagulants and statins. If you have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular diseases, check with your healthcare provider about the best diet for your health.

Dizziness, Vertigo and Imbalance Are Common Complaints Among Older Adults

August 29, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

Dizziness, vertigo and imbalance are among the top complaints of older adults, and are problematic as they put people at a significantly higher risk of falling. The reasons can range from age-related inner ear problems, cardiovascular issues, neurological conditions, new medications, and in some cases, anxiety.

Dizziness and imbalance are prime examples of typical age-related inner ear problems that cause the deterioration of the inner ear structures responsible for balance and equilibrium. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common and occurs when tiny calcium particles are dislodged in the inner ear canals. The result is a sensation of spinning or dizziness as the person moves their head in certain directions. Another inner ear problem is called Meniere’s disease, a buildup of fluid in the inner ear causing dizziness, tinnitus and hearing loss.

Cardiovascular issues related to dizziness include poor circulation, heart problems and low blood pressure. One effect of low blood pressure is orthostatic hypotension, which causes a person’s blood pressure to drop suddenly resulting in lightheadedness or dizziness.  This condition is a big fall danger.

Medications for blood pressure; antidepressants, sedatives, and tranquilizers are also associated with dizziness. Diseases like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis damage the nervous system and lead to balance problems and dizziness. Seniors are also prone to dizziness from things such as dehydration and overheating.

With so many reasons for dizziness and vertigo, there are a range of treatments. Experts say the most important thing you can do is to talk to your doctor to determine what is causing your problems.

Bruising Tends to Be More Common in Older Adults

June 27, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

As we age, many seniors discover new bruises on their body but have no memory of how they got there. The Medical News Today (MNT) explains this may be the result of the skin thinning and blood vessels weakening and/or that some people are just more prone to bruising. It can also run in families. Being a frequent, extreme bruiser includes having many bruises without remembering their cause; regularly developing bruises that take many weeks to heal and bleeding for longer than 10 minutes following an injury.

Excessive bruising and bleeding can be from medications, many of which seniors routinely take. These include drugs like warfarin, heparin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, apixaban and aspirin. Doctors say even certain herbal remedies such as ginkgo biloba, ginseng, feverfew, large quantities of garlic, ginger, and willow bark can increase the risk of bleeding or cause a change to blood vessels. The same is true for drugs like corticosteroids and glucocorticoids of which one example is prednisone.

MNT reports liver disease is also associated with excessive bruising. “As the disease progresses, the liver may stop producing the proteins that help the blood clot. As a result, a person may experience excessive bleeding and easy bruising.” Other blood disorders and diseases such as hemophilia, senile purpura, or even vitamin deficiencies can include bruising as a symptom. Experts say consult your healthcare provider if you suddenly begin bruising more easily, have symptoms such as yellow skin, fever and low energy, taking medication and begin bruising, or getting painful bruises that are slow to heal.
