Accurate Medical Information is Key to Good Health

July 16, 2025 by MS Arcadia in assisted living facility

The Medical News Today cites recent surveys showing Americans are vulnerable to misinformation via social and mass market media as well as from friends and family. As this can include critical medical information, they warn while there is a fount of easily accessible content, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from inaccurate advice.

According to a 2024 survey from Healthline, more than half of American respondents said they got health information via social media, while another 32% said they turned to family, friends, and colleagues for health advice. To help empower us to make good medical decisions, Medical News Today spoke with Dawn Holford, PhD from the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. who specializes in the psychology of communication and decision-making.

Holford suggests people double check information with more than one reliable source to look for consensus across the board. She also adamantly says it is up to medical news websites like Medical News Today to be extra diligent to ensure their information is correct. In terms of the consumer, she recommends using trusted governmental public health organizations as well as global ones like the World Health Organization. In addition, look for well-vetted independent sites and reach out to trusted healthcare providers.

Following her rule of thumb, Holford cautions to be on your guard. She explains, “If something seems to align to what you already believe — it may well be correct, but follow the same steps to verify it.”

Practicing Gratitude Can Enhance Both Mental and Physical Well-Being

July 11, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior Assisted Living

Many of us have felt the world is a scary place at one time or another, but studies show the simple practice of gratitude can go a long way toward helping us feel happier and less anxious. In fact, experts say it is linked to mental and physical health benefits like feeling more optimistic and hopeful as well as strengthening relationships, boosting immunity, lowering blood pressure, improving sleep and decreasing the risk of depression.

However, just like other healthy habits; the practice of gratitude takes a conscious effort. Experts say to receive the full benefits; it should not be saved only for special occasions but rather practiced every day.

To begin, we need to understand exactly what “gratitude” is. Erin Wiley, M.A., L.P.C.C., a licensed clinical psychotherapist and executive director of The Willow Center, explains that gratitude is “a positive state of mind evoked by focusing on and appreciating the good in one’s life.” By adopting a positive state of mind, we can concentrate on the good things as well as deal with negative events that come into our lives in a more fruitful way.

A helpful suggestion for getting into the habit of feeling more grateful includes using a journal daily to express your gratitude. In the same way, vocalizing feelings of gratitude gives them power and can help to override negative feelings. Also, spread your feelings of gratitude toward others in your life. Actions such as volunteering are yet another way to feel gratitude.

At MorningStar, we provide exceptional assisted living in Albuquerque, NM designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle that allows seniors to live life to the fullest. A Close Relationship Benefits Both Children and Grandparents

July 09, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren.  If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

MorningStar of Albuquerque Supports Your Independence

June 30, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior Assisted Living

One of the hardest things many seniors face is a chronic illness or condition that interferes and limits their independence. Burdening our spouse or another loved one with our day-to-day care is not the thing most of us want to do. In fact, it may be the time to investigate assisted living and discover what it can offer to you and your family.

Assisted living is not skilled nursing but rather compassionate senior care for the ADLs (activities of daily living). It is based around the person’s needs to ensure they get the proper support to maintain their independence within a community setting. Senior living communities like MorningStar of Albuquerque provide residents with responsive 24/7 caregivers, access to licensed nurses, medication management, third-party care providers and more.

Our spacious suites available in a variety of floor plans are meticulously designed with high ceilings, large windows, handicapped-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. Each unit is equipped with a kitchenette and private temperature control. To maintain cleanliness and comfort, weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services, as well as daily spot cleaning and trash removal, are provided.

In addition to senior care services, residents are provided with hospitality amenities such as all-day restaurant-style dining, eliminating the need to shop, prepare, and cook meals independently. The resort-style facilities include an onsite salon, life enrichment area, library, bistro, fitness center and theatre. Our fireside patios and lovely grounds encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors. We also accommodate pets, subject to our pet policy.

In addition, MorningStar of Albuquerque offers trusted care in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood based on Lavender Sky, our programmatic approach to memory care. It is our philosophy of everything we believe and strive for in service to our memory-impaired residents. Our ambition under a Lavender Sky is to Enter, Embrace and Explore.

Enhancing Quality of Life for Individuals With Alzheimer’s Disease

May 30, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior Assisted Living

Researchers say despite declining cognitive abilities, studies show those with Alzheimer’s disease do better when encouraged to participate in meaningful activities as it gives them a sense of purpose and self-worth. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports, “engaging older persons with dementia in appropriate activities has been shown to yield beneficial effects such as increasing positive emotions, improving activities of daily living (ADL) and improving the quality of life.” One study’s author explains the act of staying engaged can help dementia patients maintain quality of life even in advanced stages of the disease.

Just as it is important for older people to stay engaged and active, it is also important for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to be involved in healthy daily activities. Dementia care specialists say structure and routine helps individuals “maintain their cognitive function, sense of security, and can calm anxious or aggressive behaviors.” Especially in the early stages of the disease, these types of activities give a person a sense of control over their day. Toward the latter stages of the disease, purposeful activities can be one of the few remaining ways to engage in memories and communicate.

Studies show the creative arts are an effective way to stimulate the five senses. Singing has been shown to not only be enjoyable to those with dementia, but often is one of the last abilities they lose. A person may remember the words to a song long after other memories disappear. Dancing to or listening to popular music from their youth is another activity shown to stimulate the person’s senses and increase self-awareness, while reducing anxiety and depression. Painting or drawing can do the same for others. Experts say don’t forget the value of exercise. A short walk outside can lift spirits but make sure the person is steady on their feet as Alzheimer’s can affect gait and balance.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque provides holistic care for those with memory impairment.  Each resident has an individualized care plan which is designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Every day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior assisted living in Albuquerque, NM.

Preparing for a Parent’s Unplanned Hospital Visit

May 28, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

While many hospital stays are planned, older adults are more likely to require an unexpected trip to the hospital. When you have the luxury of time, it is easy to get prepared with the necessary information a parent needs when admitted to the hospital. It can be a different story if the trip is sudden.

Medical experts say to ensure a loved one gets the proper care; it is important to see to it that the hospital has a complete medical history.  Notes and documents can be completed and gathered now then updated as health changes occur. For starters, the hospital will want a “next of kin” contact for the patient so decide beforehand who that will be.

Now go through the list of medications your parents take and make sure they are all together in one location. In the event of a medical emergency, you will be able to bring all their medications with you to ensure the hospital knows the most up-to-date medications and dosages.

Another thing to gather information on regards your parents’ pre-existing conditions and any recent surgeries or procedures they may have had. Provide the name of their primary care provider; and be sure to let the hospital personnel know if your parent has dementia or any physical limitations.

If the hospital doesn’t already have a copy of your loved one’s advanced directive, also known as a living will, bring one with you. An advanced directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken in end-of-life situations when they cannot speak for themselves. Mom or dad may also have a Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, which is another kind of advance directive. It covers not receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if the person’s heart stops or if they stop breathing.

Other information to give to the hospital regards allergies and dietary restrictions. Additionally, make sure your loved one has their cellphone with them as many hospital rooms do not have phones.

If you are considering assisted living facilities in Albuquerque, NM, MorningStar may be your answer.  We are on the northeast side of town with wonderful views and convenient medical facilities, shopping and other services.  Residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please visit our website for more information on senior apartments and to inquire about pricing and availability.

Nearly Twenty Million Americans Have Age-Related Macular Degeneration

May 26, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior Assisted Living

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older, we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.

One of the most serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people aged 60 and older, affecting nearly 20 million Americans. The risk of developing AMD increases with age and if you are 75 or older, your risk is 1 in 3.  Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

Couples are Welcome at MorningStar of Albuquerque

May 05, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; an assisted living community may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facilities.”

Many assisted living communities like MorningStar of Albuquerque welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. The Benefits of a Good Night’s Sleep

May 02, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior Assisted Living

One thing we can do to maintain our health as we age is to get a good night’s sleep. Learning to prioritize and manage our sleep is important to good brain health including our cognitive health. However, for far too many older adults, it becomes harder and harder to sleep through the night.

Seniors often believe the myth that they no longer need as much sleep as they did when they were younger; but experts disagree. They say the truth is older adults require the same amount of sleep as their younger counterparts, which is at least 7 hours a night according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Moreover, studies show older adults are typically getting less REM (rapid eye movement) sleep per night. This is the phase when we dream and the brain is active; and is important for memory, learning, mental focus and mood.

Another sleep cycle is the period when the brain purges toxins. AARP writes, “The glymphatic system uses cerebrospinal fluid to flush out toxins and waste products, such as amyloid beta.” Not adequately going through this cycle may accelerate the amount of amyloid beta that builds up and clumps together to form plaques; and lack of this slow-wave sleep may increase a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies also report that lack of sleep can affect our emotions. After all, who has not felt grumpy or sad when they have not gotten enough sleep? Several long-term studies have shown adults who report poor sleep patterns are also more prone to depression. Getting enough quality sleep can even strengthen your immune system.

For the above reasons, it is important to try and improve your sleep quality. If you think stress and anxiety are interfering with your sleep, try mindful practices like keeping a gratitude journal or breathing exercises. Also, make a point to get enough physical exercise each day as that too can help you sleep better.

At MorningStar, our mission is to provide the best senior assisted living in Albuquerque, and we are committed to the comfort, wellbeing, and safety of our remarkable residents.  Located on the popular northeast side of town, MorningStar of Albuquerque is convenient for medical facilities, shopping, and restaurants as well as other services.  Our beautiful community offers 48 stylish assisted living suites and 21 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment. Are You Annoyed by Medical History Forms?

April 30, 2025 by MS Arcadia in Senior apartments

We have all had the experience of sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office with a clipboard or tablet loaded with forms ready to be filled out. You may wonder why as you have already filled out similar forms at your other healthcare providers, and maybe even at this office.

Experts say it is good to remember there are several reasons why you are being asked for your medical history again. To start with, your health may have changed. Additionally, not all doctor offices have access to the same digital information; or it may not have been updated. Also, a specialist may be looking for different information not typically collected by your primary care physician. Remember your refusal to answer questions could make it harder for your doctor to see the full picture of your problem; or at the very least make you look uncooperative. Dr. Robert Shmerling, a rheumatologist and senior faculty editor at Harvard Health Publishing, agrees you are not obligated to fill out your medical history but says the response from the practice might be, “How can we provide the best care if you don’t provide the information?”

So what is the most important information to include? The Harvard Health Publishing article highlights the most useful things to share with your healthcare provider:

  • chronic or new symptoms and conditions

  • past surgeries

  • family medical history

  • insurance information

  • current prescription and over-the counter medicines, supplements, vitamins, and any herbal remedies or complementary medicines you use

  • medication allergies

  • vaccination history

  • any screening tests you’ve had, so they won’t be prescribed unnecessarily

  • any metal implants you have, which could affect screenings.

If you are worried about giving out so much personal information, remember the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a federal law, protects your health information with very strict rules about who can access it and how it can be shared.

At MorningStar, we provide senior assisted living in Albuquerque, NM that allows residents to safely and comfortably age in place.
