Are You the Main Caregiver for an Elderly Family Member?

January 15, 2021 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If you are the main caregiver for an elderly family member who requires help with the activities of daily living (ADLs), it may be the job is becoming too much for you.  The Nov/Dec issue of Today’s Geriatric Medicine cites a study by the “National Alliance for Caregiving and Caring Across Generations,” which states that more than 11 million American adults are considered sandwich generation caregivers and bear the responsibility of simultaneously caring for their children as well as an aging family member.  In total it is believed there are approximately 40.4 million unpaid caregivers for adults 65 years and older in the United States consisting of adult children, spouses, relatives or friends.  In addition, 61 percent of those caregivers are employed, including nearly half who work full-time and juggle their own family responsibilities.

While for most, caregiving is a labor of love but there is no denying it can be challenging.  Whether you are an adult child with your own children, a spouse, or another relative, you may feel it is time to ask for help.  This decision may lead you to an assisted living community where mom or dad will receive all the care they need and you can go back to being their loving child.  If you are a spouse who has been responsible for the caregiving duties, senior living communities such as MorningStar of Albuquerque warmly welcome married couples to live together in their own suite, surrounded by their own treasured possessions.

We are pleased to give residents and their families peace of mind knowing that trained care managers are there to help navigate changes in health, and that transportation is available for doctor visits and other errands.  It is also a relief to know mom or dad will have nutritional, daily meals prepared by our own Executive Chef, built-in companionship, and the comfort of knowing someone is always around to lend a hand if needed.

In addition, MorningStar of Albuquerque has a team of caregivers who feel it is a privilege to serve seniors and understand that residents deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.  Our community has 48 suites for assisted living and 21 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  If you are looking for outstanding memory care or assisted living, Albuquerque’s MorningStar community encourages you to contact us for more information about our beautiful home.

MorningStar of Albuquerque’s mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest memory care and assisted living Albuquerque, NM has to offer.

Senior Living You Can Trust!

January 07, 2021 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Placing a loved one in an assisted living or memory care community is not done lightly as we want the very best care for them.  Trust is an important part of that decision, which is why MorningStar of Santa Fe is pleased to share a couple of the reviews we have received from family members of our residents.

One resident’s daughter writes about how much she appreciated the fact that the staff is always willing to lend a helping hand, and she loves the warm welcome she gets from the moment she steps through the door.  She goes on to say, “The Reflections Neighborhood staff is taking great care of dad,” and adds, “I have no worries about his care.  I appreciate all you do for my dad and highly recommend your Assisted Living facility to all.”

Another family expressed their gratitude with the following message: “My 93-year-old mom spent the last few months of her life in this assisted living setting.  The staff, from top to bottom, was so loving and conscientious from the time my mom arrived through the time of her passing.  Nice, smart, responsible, compassionate people.  Our family sincerely thanks MorningStar staff and administration for everything.”

We do want to give a shout-out to our remarkable team members as we know that we could not deliver this kind of service without them.  MorningStar of Santa Fe is lucky to attract a team of caregivers that are dedicated and feel privileged to serve.  In addition we provide each with the support and training they need to be successful including Radiance, our brand standard of Service Excellence. Its precepts are introduced to team members upon hiring, and celebrate an attitude of selflessness that issues from a deep and sincere place - like a beam of light.  Please visit our website for senior living in Santa Fe, NM that is delivered with warmth, sincerity and depth.

Tips to Help Your Elderly Loved Ones Avoid Being Scammed

January 05, 2021 by MS Arcadia

Each year millions of elderly seniors fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. The sad part it is often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills. Experts also say seniors are from a generation that was raised to be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) updates the public to current scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, take a look at the info and discuss the various schemes used with them. One scam frequently used this year is a phone call, email or in-person approach to collect money for disaster relief. Thieves also scam those who have been the victim of a disaster by trying to collect personal information under the guise of providing some sort of financial relief.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor. In addition never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people. Also do not give out personal PIN #s, or Medicare and other financial info over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure sales persons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes. Experts say it is most likely a hoax. Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

Please visit MorningStar of Sparks to learn more about vibrant senior living in Reno. Our community has 128 bright suites for independent living and another 80 for assisted living. Within our memory care wing, we provide 32 secure suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Please visit our website to learn more.

MorningStar of Albuquerque Provides Compassionate, Loving Care

January 05, 2021 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If you are considering assisted living, Albuquerque NM’s MorningStar community may be the answer.   Unlike many other senior communities in the area, our warm and welcoming home was designed from the ground up to serve both assisted living residents as well as our most tender memory care residents.

MorningStar of Albuquerque is dedicated to providing compassionate, loving care that enhances our residents’ lives.  We are proud to have a team of individuals with a felt calling to serve, and who consider seniors to be heroes.  Each staff member is the type of person who does the right things even when no one is watching and willingly goes the extra mile to assist our residents.

A sign that a loved one would do better in assisted living includes a person who lives alone and has had a fall (or more than one) over the last six months.  While hopefully they were not seriously injured, please keep in mind how dangerous falls are for seniors.  The CDC reports that, “each year one in four older adults aged 65 and older will fall. Among older Americans, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury.”  In 2017 this resulted in 29 million falls, 3 million emergency department visits, 800,000 hospitalizations and 28,000 deaths.  At MorningStar, every resident has around-the-clock Care Managers and access to full-time Licensed Nurses (on call 24/7).  In addition, each of our private suites has an emergency call system installed.

Another reason assisted living makes sense for so many seniors right now is the isolation from sheltering at home due to the pandemic.  For elderly adults who live alone, this can be very lonely as many are not able to spend time with their family members including their grandchildren.  While it is great to be able to Skype or Facetime, we all know it is not the same thing.

While just a few examples of the numerous advantages senior living offers, a community like MorningStar of Albuquerque is committed to ensuring the wellbeing and comfort of our residents on all levels.  Think about the benefit of no longer having to grocery shop and prepare meals as we offer a 5-star dining service, or worry about getting safely to doctor visits and other important errands as we provide scheduled transportation.

Finally, we want you to know we have made many changes in our community to keep both residents and team members safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.  We continue to stay abreast of developments and evaluate best practices and innovations in our services to seniors. Please visit our website for more information.

Seniors with Chronic Diseases are More at Risk for Poor Nutrition

January 01, 2021 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) cautions that elderly adults with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease among others, are more at risk for poor nutrition.  Bad eating habits, loss of appetite, lack of access to healthy foods due to an inability to get out and shop, or a shortage of money, only add to the problem.

The NCOA also wants seniors to know that poor nutrition not only makes it harder to manage chronic diseases but may actually make you more vulnerable to coming down with them.  Another problem is it can weaken your immune system leaving you susceptible to the flu, colds and other viruses.  Moreover, poor nutrition can hamper one’s ability to recover from surgical procedures, heal wounds, and increases the risk for infection or falls.

Also, as many elderly people have a decrease in appetite and consume much smaller portions each day, the food they do eat needs to be nutrient-dense.  This is one reason experts recommend the elderly avoid foods high in sugar, salt and trans fats as well as processed foods, which often are short on nutrients and much needed vitamins and minerals.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we know that good nutrition is important to the health of seniors.  This is why we offer our residents not only delicious daily meals but ones that are largely prepared from scratch and include the freshest ingredients.  Our range of nutritional choices include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat so residents can self-manage their diet.  Our Executive Chef even incorporates “super foods” such as acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and leafy, dark greens to enhance our food service. For more information on the finest memory care and assisted living Phoenix offers, please contact us or visit our website.

MorningStar at Arcadia represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  If you are looking for exceptional memory care or assisted living, Phoenix’s MorningStar at Arcadia may be your answer.

Senior Living: Santa Fe, NM's Community Provides a Range of Benefits

December 30, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If you spent the holidays worrying about your elderly parent, who while safely quarantined in their home, were alone and lonely and likely not getting the kind of personal daily care, meals, or company they needed, it may be time to consider assisted living.  At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we specialize in providing care for seniors who need a little help with their day-to-day personal care activities but do not require 24-hour medical care.

We have seen first-hand how the transition to assisted living eases the stress of either or both the senior’s life or the family caregiver’s life.  Moreover we recognize that senior living at its best allows residents to not only survive but to thrive with a wide range of care services, fine dining, and meaningful wellness programs and activities.  In addition residents enjoy built-in companionship as they make new friends with fellow residents and our truly loving staff.

To give families a good idea of what services are provided with assisted living, we are happy to answer questions.  Also we suggest you take a look at our website where you will find all kinds of information.  A good place to start is our Decision Guide under the “First Steps” tab.  Here we go over things to look for that may indicate your parent needs more help such as recent falls, unexplained weight loss, poor balance, and/or poor personal hygiene.   From there, take a look at our FAQs for more details.

Under our “Wellness” tab we go over our dining services, life enrichment programs, and clinical care services.  We also like to direct interested families to “Our Heart” to read a little background on how MorningStar Senior Living began and what its mission and precepts are all about.

While you will discover our company was founded on Judeo-Christian tradition, we honor all faith systems and worldviews as we believe it is our responsibility to respect residents’ spiritual preference as part of caring for the whole person.  In fact our goal is to meet a resident’s social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs as part of creating a comfortable home and compassionate care.  Please contact us for more info.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  We encourage you to give us a call for more information on unparalleled senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Researchers Study the Link Between Dementia & a Healthy Lifestyle

December 27, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The Alzheimer’s Association is partnering with the Wake Forest School of Medicine in a new, first-of-its-kind intervention trial called the U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. POINTER). The two-year clinical trial wants to learn if lifestyle interventions that simultaneously target multiple risk factors can protect cognitive function in older adults between the ages of 60-79 who are at increased risk for cognitive decline.

The national study hopes to “create a new and healthier ‘normal’ through lifestyle changes.” While research have already shown that a healthier lifestyle protects our bodies’ overall health, scientists now want to know if it can also protect the health of the brain from future memory problems such as Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

The U.S. Pointer study is currently being conducted at the University of California - Davis, Rush University Medical Center, and Wake Forest School of Medicine, and is the first study of its kind to be done on such a large group of participants from across the United States. Additionally it is part of a worldwide consortium of other similar research including the 2014 Finland study of healthy older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. The “FINGER Study” (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability) reports that “a two-year combination therapy simultaneously targeting physical exercise, a healthy diet, cognitive stimulation, and self-monitoring of heart health risk factors had a protective effect on cognitive function.”

At MorningStar of Sparks, we have a reputation for the finest senior living Reno offers. Our community has 128 bright suites for independent living and another 80 for assisted living. In addition we have 32 secure suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Currently we are safely accepting new residence and invite you to visit our website for further information regarding our gorgeous home as well as our COVID-19 protocols.

Assisted Living at MorningStar of Albuquerque

December 27, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

MorningStar of Albuquerque wants to reassure families considering assisted living that if they put their loved ones into our home, we will see to it they receive the care they need.  Before the resident even moves in, our Wellness Director will meet with the family to thoroughly discuss the person’s medical history, current health condition, medications, and personal preferences.  In addition, we regularly review, evaluate, and update care plans to ensure changing needs are addressed.

As a family member, some of your concerns may be focused on your parent or loved one’s medications especially if they have had problems taking them on time, all the time, or incorrectly.  If you want to know if we offer medication management, the answer is yes, and we also offer pharmacy services.  We consider medication management to be an important service to our residents as we know many seniors with chronic health conditions take several prescription medications daily, which can result in missed or improper dosages.

Your initial meeting with our Wellness Director is also a good time to discuss concerns such as a parent who has been losing weight recently and who may not be eating properly.  Or it may be you worry they are not drinking enough fluids each day.  We have an answer to both problems as our 5-star meal service is designed to be both nutritional as well as to temp the appetite of our most discerning residents.  To help keep our residents hydrated, we make sure they have plenty of opportunities to drink throughout the day.

Along with our compassionate care services and resort-style amenities, residents have a choice of well-designed floorplans that are sure to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  Within our 48 assisted living suites, we offer floorplans that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations that provide residents privacy, comfort, and security.  You will find all of our suites have high ceilings, large windows, wall-to-wall carpeting and mini blinds and all that is missing to make it home is your own furnishings and personal items.  Moreover, if you are wondering, we are pet friendly!

For more information about the finest assisted living Albuquerque, NM offers, we encourage you to visit our website for contact information as well to inquire about pricing and availability.

A Flu Shot is More Important than Ever This Year

December 21, 2020 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Medical professionals remind Americans that the flu can also be deadly, and say it is especially important for those at risk of serious complications to be on guard against getting it.  In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that during the 2019-20 flu season as many as 740,000 Americans were hospitalized.  The 2017-18 flu season was an extremely virulent strain and caused approximately 61,000 deaths.

This year doctors worry about an overlap of COVID-19 and the flu; and is why there is such a push to have all Americans get a flu shot.  Those more at risk include adults over the age of 65.  Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, explains that as we age our immune systems are not as robust.  Add to that, about half of those people have another underlying health condition that puts them at risk.

Something like heart disease or a history of stroke increases a person’s risk for heart problems including a heart attack or another stroke during a case of the flu.  Diabetics also are three times more likely to die from the flu; and lung conditions such as COPD or asthma can lead to pneumonia or other respiratory infections.  Moreover, doctors caution those with weakened immune systems and cancer survivors as well as anyone with a body index greater than 40 are more at risk for serious complications from the flu.  Talk to your healthcare provider about getting a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia vaccination.

MorningStar at Arcadia offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security.  Our beautiful community has 80 stylish suites for assisted living and 30 secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. If you are looking for exceptional senior living, Phoenix’s MorningStar at Arcadia encourages you to contact us or visit our website to learn more about our loving community.

Brush Up on Your Video Chat Skills in Readiness for the Holidays

December 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

While many of us are saddened at the time spent apart from beloved family members and friends due to COVID, we need to remember that it is just a matter of time before we will get back to our normal lives.  That being said it is especially difficult to not spend time with our grandkids, but tech experts offer some tips to help make the Christmas season a little easier with video chats that are more engaging and meaningful.

To start with, experts say it is time to improve your tech skills and get more familiar with using Zoom, FaceTime and/or Skype including keeping the camera on you.  Once you get the hang of it, you will find it is actually pretty simple.  Perhaps more challenging is how to keep the attention of a young child or even a teenager so everyone gets something out of the call.

If you are a family who loves board games, how about trying to play a virtual game like chess for older grandkids or simple games like Candyland or Uno for the younger ones.  The child can set up the game board, most kids love to be in control, and if you like, you can have your own dice to roll.

If it has been a while since the kids were at your place, give them a tour and show them anything that is new or different.  Also be sure to include the family pets in the call.  An article on the AARP website suggests you take the time beforehand to think about specific questions to ask the kids rather than just asking how they are.  If they play sports, ask about last week’s game, or what they thought about a particular TV show they watch or a book they are reading.

Other activities for younger kids could include reading a book to them, or baking a batch of cookies together virtually (you will probably need mom or dad’s help when it comes to the baking part).  Also keep in mind that while updating your video chat skills may feel confusing at first, connecting with your loved ones makes it all worthwhile.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  We invite you to visit our website for contact information and to inquire about availability and pricing regarding the finest senior living Santa Fe, NM offers.

Enjoy Healthy Meals This Fall

December 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Every fall, many of us treat ourselves to a variety of pumpkin dishes from spicy lattes to breads and pies.  However, this time of year many of our seasonal foods are not only tasty but healthy.  The cranberry is one of these foods, which has medical experts giving it at a “super food” status.  The Medical News Today website explains that cranberries are high in nutrients as well as antioxidants.

In fact, “research has linked the nutrients in cranberries to a lower risk of urinary tract infection (UTI), the prevention of certain types of cancer, improved immune function, and decreased blood pressure.”  Other studies have found cranberry supplements to be beneficial in reducing a person’s body mass index (BMI) as well as improve HDL (high density lipoprotein) levels (good cholesterol).

There are also tasty substitutes to help flavor food rather than using salt or sugar.  Fresh garlic is one of these.  The National Cancer Institute lists garlic “as food that may help fight stomach and colon cancers in some folks.” Other studies have found it may have a small effect on lowering the body’s blood cholesterol.

Cinnamon is another seasoning that adds lots of favor to fall dishes.  Beyond its good taste, several recent studies show it may help to lower blood glucose levels for people with Type 2 diabetes, which would be great news for the almost 85 million prediabetics in the country.  Adding cinnamon to our diet is as easy as putting a dash in a cup of coffee, tea or cider or sprinkling it on apple slices.

Ginger is another food easy to incorporate into many different dishes and medical experts say it is good for the digestive system and helps lessen nausea and motion sickness.   Ginger tastes great in Asian dishes and can be added to salad dressings or used in a sauce over grilled fish.  Also, if you haven’t yet discovered the benefits of turmeric, now would be a good time to do so. Containing curcumin, it has been shown to offer “potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant properties in animal and laboratory studies.”

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we pride ourselves on providing residents with a lifestyle of comfort and wellness including our 5-star food service.  Meals are prepared largely from scratch and contain fresh foods and seasonings, some of which are locally sourced.  Visit our website to learn what sets our community apart from other assisted living Albuquerque offers and why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Be More Independent with the Right Mobility Aid

December 12, 2020 by MS Arcadia

If you have arthritis, heart or lung issues, pain and weakness in the feet and legs, impairment due to a stroke, visual impairment, or other balance problems, a mobility aid can help you feel more independent, reduce pain, and increase confidence.  With a number of options available ranging from canes to walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, you may be wondering which one is best for your needs.

Experts explain that your choice of aids will depend on your disability and/or medical condition.  Canes are the most common choice and are good for someone with balance problems.  In fact the journal, Medical News Today, says that one in 10 adults over the age of 65 uses a cane.   However, even here there are decisions to be made.  While white canes are reserved for the visually impaired or blind, you may find a four-footed cane with its wider base offers more stability.  If you need to shift weight from the wrist to the arm, try a forearm cane.

Walkers, also called Zimmer frames, provide stability and are used by an estimated 4.6 percent of people in the country over the age of 65.  Along with the basic walker, styles include rollators that have four wheels, handlebars and a seat.  Knee walkers are similar to a rollator but have a padded cushion to rest a knee on while the stronger leg moves it forward.  Walker-cane hybrids are another option that offers better support than a standard cane.

For more severe disabilities or to move longer distances, a wide range of wheelchairs and scooters are available. If mobility problems are long-term, modifications to your home may also be necessary.  Regardless of what mobility aid you decide on, doctors recommend making an appointment with your health care provider or physical therapist to learn how to use the new device properly.

MorningStar at Arcadia proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. What Does Assisted Living Offer?

December 10, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Many families mistakenly think senior living and particularly assisted living is just a more luxurious nursing home.  The fact is nursing homes are intended for people who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental conditions and require around-the-clock skilled nursing care.  Residents may be bedridden or in wheelchairs and receive ongoing palliative and preventative long-term care.

Assisted living is for seniors who are mostly independent but require help with what is known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include things like dressing, bathing and other personal care activities.  In some cases, people move into assisted living knowing that while they do not now need assistance with such tasks, they may need help in the near future.

Assisted living also makes sense for seniors who are looking for more companionship and love the security of knowing they are not alone.  As many assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Arcadia have an emergency call system in each suite, you can rest easy knowing help is just minutes away.   Another perk of MorningStar is we offer scheduled transportation so you will never have to worry about getting to your doctor appointments and other important errands.

Moreover, while MorningStar’s suites vary from studios to two-bedrooms (including penthouse suites), all of our suites are smartly designed to make the most of the space they offer with high ceilings, large windows and both natural and overhead lighting.  In addition, residents often tell us what a relief it was to give up their large family homes that were hard to keep clean as well as all of the maintenance required.  Residents also enjoy weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services.

MorningStar at Arcadia offers the kind of senior living area families have come to count on.  We have 80 bright suites for assisted living and another 30 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, Phoenix’s MorningStar at Arcadia encourages you to contact us or visit our website to learn more about our loving community.

Fall Prevention is Important for Seniors to Practice!

December 07, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The Mayo Clinic reminds older adults it is important they take proper precautions to prevent falls.  As we age, medical conditions, the resulting medications needed, and a more sedentary lifestyle can result in weaker muscles and balance problems that can lead to a fall.  Also please keep in mind, a fall for an older adult can cause injuries that are very serious such as a broken hip, head trauma, or in the most severe cases, death.

However the solution to preventing falls is not to stop moving.  The medical experts at the Mayo Clinic explain being inactive is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is vital that we keep moving.  To that end, they suggest a commonsense six-part plan to keep seniors safely mobile.

Their first recommendation is to set up an appointment with your doctor.  Bring to the visit a list of all your medications, and be prepared to discuss with your doctor any side effects of the drugs that may put you more at risk for a fall such as anti-depressants or sedatives.  It may be possible to eliminate or substitute the medication for something else.  Also talk to your doctor about whether you have fallen and if it was due to your medical condition.

In addition discuss with your healthcare provider what type of exercise would be best for you.  Typically walking, swimming and something like tai chi are gentle exercises that are safe for most; and offer the benefit of strengthening muscles, improving balance, and gait.

Other ways to lessen your risk for a fall begins by reviewing your home with an eye to fall prevention.  Start by checking hallways and stairways for adequate lighting, and add more if needed.  Secure loose rugs and make sure you have wide clear paths for walking around your home.  Wear proper fitting shoes with nonskid soles and use assistive aids like a cane or walker if needed to help maintain your balance.  Install grab bars and railings where needed.

At the MorningStar of Santa Fe assisted living and memory care community, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need.  Moreover our cherished residents and their families know they can trust the compassionate, professional MorningStar team to deliver the finest senior living in Santa Fe, NM.

Positive Thinking Can Change Senior’s Lives for the Better

December 07, 2020 by MS Arcadia

There are many examples of how the power of positive thinking has changed people’s lives for the better.  When we take a positive attitude, it helps us to be more successful in most every aspect of our lives; and experts say it can be even more important as we age.

Tom Caklos, founder of the www.positivecreators.com website, explains that positive thinking “is a critical ingredient for the well-being and health when a person is on the last leg of his or her life after completing all responsibilities and fulfilling all goals.”  He adds it is an important tool to help the elderly transform their lives and fill it with passion, energy and joy.”

So how can a senior who may be experiencing the loss of independence or a loved one, challenging health problems, and/or chronic pain cultivate positive thinking?  Experts suggest getting into the habit of using positive affirmation to change negative thinking into positive thoughts.  Moreover, when we focus on the changes we wish to make in our lives, it can help boost self-esteem and confidence.

Positive affirmations can be simple and include things like giving thanks each day for your longevity and for all of the people in your life who you love and who love you.  Be grateful for the wisdom you have learned in life and recognize your ability to contribute.   Affirm that these are the best years of your life, that you have the right to good health, and the right to live with joy and purpose.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals and are committed to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence.  We have 80 stylish assisted living suites, with another 30 secure suites in our Reflections’ wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  Visit our website to see what sets our community apart from other senior living Phoenix offers and why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Did You Get Your Flu Shot? It May Reduce Your Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

December 05, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Not only do flu shots NOT make a person more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease, a myth that has been around for years, but recent research has found evidence that flu and pneumonia vaccines may actually protect you from Alzheimer’s.  This year’s 2020 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference presented two studies that dealt with this very idea.

The first study was from the University of Texas where they went through millions of medical records in a national database with the goal of finding factors that appeared to affect a person’s risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.  Albert Amran, a medical student of the McGovern Medical School at the university’s Health Science Center in Houston and an author of the study, relates that one of the commonalities was getting a flu shot.  Researchers took into account other risk factors for Alzheimer’s such as smoking, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, education, and income as well as the number of prescriptions a person filled as a way to check their overall health.  Even after all that, Amran explained they found that “People who got at least one flu shot had a 17% reduction in risk, and people who got regular vaccinations saw their risk drop another 13%.

The other study presented at the conference was by a team of researchers from Duke University and the University of North Carolina.  Svetlana Ukraintseva, an associate research professor in the Biodemography of Aging Research Unit at Duke's Social Science Research Institute of Medical Records, said the team studied the medical records of more than 5,000 people at least 65 years and older.  In her presentation to the Conference, she stated they discovered individuals who had a “pneumonia vaccine before the age of 75 was at least 25% less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's.”

While scientists are uncertain why flu and pneumonia vaccinations appear to protect seniors from Alzheimer’s, they have some theories.  One may be the fact that flu and pneumonia adversely affect the brain so protecting a person from the disease protects their brain from damage.  Another theory is that getting the flu or pneumonia can result in a general weakening of the immune system and ultimately allow more bacteria and viruses into the brain, putting them more at risk for Alzheimer’s.

Cataracts are a Common Problem in Aging Eyes

December 05, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The Mayo Clinic defines cataracts as a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye and explains it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. While they develop slowly and do not affect our vision much early-on, as the condition progresses, people find it is difficult to read and drive a car, especially at night. Symptoms also include hazy or less colorful vision; sensitivity to light and glare, double vision in one eye, and the need for brighter lights for reading and other activities.

About half of Americans will have cataracts by the age of 75 but they can also be the result of an injury or certain genetic disorders. In addition diabetes, the long-term use of a steroid medication, or past eye surgery can cause cataracts to develop.

Doctor say when cataracts start interfering with your vision as the “clouding becomes denser and involves a bigger part of the lens, to the point your vision becomes blurred,” it is time to think about cataract surgery. The good news is that the surgery is typically very safe and effective.

Cataracts and other eye problems are more common in seniors and is why the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends adults over the age of 65 get a complete eye exam every year or two. During your exam, your ophthalmologist will check not only for cataracts but age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma as well as help to identify certain health conditions such as diabetes or stroke. They also recommend wearing sunglasses to screen out the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light rays or wear regular eyeglasses with a clear anti-UV coating to slow down the formation of cataracts.

Finding Things to be Grateful for will Make You Feel Better!

December 04, 2020 by MS Arcadia

As we come to the end of a very different, difficult year, it is important to take time to think about the things we are thankful for in our own lives.  While many people are feeling depressed, isolated, or a sense of loss, behavioral scientists have found that expressing gratitude can be good for us.  When we express gratitude, we acknowledge what is good in our lives and give thanks to both tangible and intangible gifts bestowed upon us.

One recent study focusing on the benefits of gratitude from psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami, found people who expressed gratitude felt more positive emotions and even improved their health.  During the 10-week study, one group of participants wrote down everything that had happened during each week that they were grateful for.  The other group was told to record everything that had irritated them throughout the week.

At the end of the study, participants were interviewed and researchers found that the group that wrote about gratitude was more optimistic and felt better about their lives. “Surprisingly, they also exercised more and had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on sources of aggravation.”  In another study, couples were asked to take the time each day to express their gratitude to their partner.  Participants said they felt more positive toward their partner as well as more comfortable discussing things that were upsetting to them about the relationship.

While it is hard to categorically say expressing gratitude will make us feel better about ourselves, most of the studies done on gratitude appear to support the premise.  We know that at the MorningStar of Santa Fe senior living community, we all try to be thankful for our many blessings.  For compassionate senior living, Santa Fe, NM’s families trust, we are their top choice.  We are grateful for our team of dedicated individuals who understand the intrinsic value of serving others, especially seniors.  Please contact us!

Moving Your Parent to Memory Care

December 01, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Now that the decision has been made to move mom or dad into memory care, you may be worrying about how they will handle the change.  This is a common concern of families but experts have some tips to help ease the transition for both you and your loved one.

While realistically you understood the need for change, and knew your parent was not getting the care they needed to ensure their wellbeing and safety; it is still unsettling to think of them being subjected to such a big change.  However, please remember you did your homework and wisely selected the community you thought was the best option.  You also recognize the community is able and ready to provide the level of care you want for your loved one.  So take a deep breath, and read some of the following advice.

First, remember that typically when families finally make the move to memory care, the person is no longer their self and most likely does not realize the extent of the problem.  Thus it is unproductive to try and tell them you are doing this because they need help.  Along the same lines, experts say it is best to not include them in the planning or packing process, it can be too upsetting for them.

If you can, schedule the move for the time of day the person is at their best and don’t over pack as too much stuff is just confusing to someone with dementia.  Enlist the help of the home’s staff to aid you and your loved one in coping with the change.  While COVID-19 may hinder some of your access to the new home, take advantage of any move-in programs and assistance offered including letting the Wellness Director explain to your parent why memory care is necessary.

In addition, you may want to take a few days off from work in case you are needed at the community.  And while it may seem unfair, experts suggest you do not tell the person in advance about the move.  Also remember with time it will get easier, and be sure to give them some time to adjust on their own.

MorningStar at Arcadia’s goal is to provide the best senior living Phoenix offers, which includes loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia diseases.  Our compassionate, experienced team feels privileged to serve our special residents.  We consider the care and support of residents’ family members to be part of our job, and we are here for them as well.  Visit our website for contact information.
