6 GOOD BRAIN GAMES FOR SENIORS

May 03, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

When you think of exercise, you probably think about the many options you have to work out the body. As we age, physical exercise becomes even more important to help us maintain strength and agility.

Did you know that exercising your brain is just as important as exercising your body?

According to the National Institutes of Health, exercising the brain can improve memory, reasoning, and the speed of processing information. Other studies show that seniors who exercise the brain enjoy greater independence and a lower risk of developing dementia. One of the most effective ways to exercise the brain involves playing what mental health experts call brain games.

If you are searching for an assisted living facility in Phoenix, Arizona, you should verify that any of the senior housing facilities on your shortlist promote healthy brain games for their guests.

Let’s look at six good brain games for seniors.

Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles do a great job of exercising the brain because they require developing keen foresight to see how words form several steps before the time comes to create them. Your senior loved one can find crossword puzzles in a wide variety of print publications. Crossword puzzles do not require the participation of another person, which means your senior loved one can work on one at any time during the day.

Bingo

We go from crossword puzzles that can be done alone to a good brain game that requires the participation of dozens of other people. Many assisted living facilities host bingo night, which attracts a large group of residents. Bingo requires staying on top of the numbers you have in front of you, as well as reacting quickly whenever one of your numbers gets called out. Senior centers typically put on a bingo night once a month as well.

Checkers

The next two good brain games provide the ultimate tests of exercising brain power. Checkers is a fun game to play, as well as a relatively easy one to learn for seniors. This good brain game is less about developing strategy and more about the process of making logic-based decisions and improving hand-eye coordination. Games sets come in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate the vision needs of seniors.

Chess

Chess represents a much more complex game than checkers because of the multiple layers of strategy involved in moving the pieces around the board. However, learning chess is highly beneficial because it improves problem-solving skills, as well as enhances deductive reasoning. Chess even can improve your senior’s patience, which is something that often diminishes as we grow older.

Scrabble

As the classic brain game associated with seniors, playing Scrabble is an entertaining activity while at the same time giving memory a robust workout. Scrabble also is one of the best games for improving or restoring a senior’s vocabulary. This good brain game brings together seniors, which is a plus considering the isolation that can develop while living apart from family members.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Your senior loved one can work on a jigsaw puzzle alone or with one or more friends. Jigsaw puzzles strengthen problem-solving and strategy-developing skills, while also requiring your senior loved one to exhibit a high level of patience. This good brain game varies in complexity, depending on the number of pieces and the type of picture design. At the MorningStar Arcadia assisted living facility in Phoenix, Arizona, our culture is “to honor, to value, to invest” in our residents. This type of culture separates us from other memory care facilities in Phoenix, AZ. Learn more about our beautiful community by submitting the online Contact form.

Is a Loved One Having Memory Problems?

April 28, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

If your mom or dad or another loved one is having serious memory problems, we have some suggestions to help you navigate through this trying time.  Medical experts recommend doing some research on Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, to educate yourself on how the disease is diagnosed, stages of the disease, and some of what your family can expect if it is.  You may want to visit websites such as the Alzheimer’s Association as well as online support groups for family members dealing with the disease for suggestions on how to best prepare and support your parents.

Also, remember it may not be dementia as there are medical conditions, reactions to medications, and nutritional and hormonal issues that can cause dementia-like symptoms.  Therefore, you need to sit down and have a talk with your parents about the problems they are having and the need to make an appointment with their healthcare provider for a full medical exam.

Experts say when you are ready to have the “conversation,” be honest and try to keep your voice calm.  Pick a time and place where you will not be interrupted and be sure to include in your homework different care options in case they ask.  Also, be ready to talk less and listen more as they may have also been worried about some of the changes they have been experiencing.  However, keep in mind it is common for a person to be confused, in denial, and/or withdraw.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we understand a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia related disease is devastating, and we want area families to know we are here to help shoulder the burden. Our goal is to provide the best assisted living Albuquerque, NM offers, which includes specialized care for those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our comprehensive care also includes assisting families to better understand and cope with the disease. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Why Try Volunteering with Seniors

March 22, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Aging is something that will happen to all of us, so it can be a valuable experience to try volunteering with seniors while you are still young. Becoming old is an inevitable part of life, and many people find themselves alone and in need of help during this season of their lives. However, thanks to volunteers, these seniors do not have to always feel this way! Many assisted living communities or other elder-centric organizations are often in need of people willing to help take care of seniors by way of quality time, errands, teaching, and much more. Keep reading to discover why you should try volunteering with seniors.

You Will Meet New Friends

Volunteering in any capacity is a great way to meet new people. However, when you choose to volunteer with the elderly, you get to meet new friends as well! By helping seniors in their time of need, you will have the opportunity to get to know them on a personal level, learn about their lives, and so much more. Oftentimes, elderly people can be prone to loneliness, and will just be in need of someone they can talk to and depend on. They quite literally need someone to come and be their friend! By volunteering with seniors, you are not only being a friend, but you are gaining friends as well.

You Can Utilize Your Skills and/or Hobbies

Depending on your skills and/or hobbies, you can volunteer with the elderly to utilize them. For example, if you are very good at a creative skill like painting or crocheting, you can volunteer your time to teach these skills to the elderly. Contrary to popular belief, many seniors want to, and even enjoy learning new skills and hobbies. This can translate into all kinds of volunteering opportunities centered around teaching the skills and hobbies you love as well. Doing this can also allow you to have more time to pursue hobbies you actually love, and help you get back in touch with your creative side. Any senior living in Phoenix will be excited to learn about what you know!

You Will Gain New Perspectives

Volunteering with seniors is a great way to learn how the generations before you really lived, what they learned, and how we can improve on what they built. By actually spending time with the elderly, you will be able to learn about their perspectives about life, as well as share your own experiences. This can show you points of view you may not have considered before, as well as help you to become more open minded about how to move forward in your future.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living Phoenix, AZ has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar Assisted Living Homes & Memory Care at Arcadia provides outstanding assisted living Homes and memory care.

Why Seniors Need Time Outside

March 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

It is no secret that going outside into nature is something that can be a very healing experience. This is especially true for the elderly who are in assisted living. The outdoors are a great place to get fresh air, sunlight, and even experience the beauty of local wildlife. In this post, we will be discussing why seniors need time outside to promote quality of life and well being.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an absolutely necessary nutrient to keep our bodies functioning properly. The best and most effective way to get it is to spend at least 15 minutes a day outside in the sunshine. Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin whenever we are out in the sun. However, since our bodies do not store “extra” vitamin D, it is important to try to get outside at least once a day. Vitamin D makes it possible to absorb calcium, combat bone loss, and even help with coping with depression.

Mental Health

Speaking of coping with depression, making time to go outdoors consistently can do wonders for your mental health. Those in senior living in Phoenix can benefit greatly from daily trips into the great outdoors; as long as the weather permits, of course. Being outside encourages improved bodily functions, which can help with any chronic pain elderly people often experience as they age.

This reduction of pain can be a wonderful way to improve mental health, as seniors will have more to focus on besides their pain. Stress hormones are also reduced while spending time outdoors, which in turn, can combat anxiety, mental fatigue, high blood pressure, and more.

Immunity

The immune system is another part of the body that can be improved by spending time outside. This benefit can be built onto even more as well by being active outside as well. It is a well-known fact that maintaining an active lifestyle can help boost the immune system, as well as helping to prevent diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, strokes, heart disease, and much more. By pairing activities with the outdoors, you are also getting all the benefits of nature, sunshine, and fresh air.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating true homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Considering Assisted Living for a Loved One in Santa Fe?

March 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

MorningStar of Santa Fe wants to reassure families considering assisted living that if their loved one moves into our home, we will see to it they receive the care they need.  Before the resident even moves in, our Wellness Director will meet with the family to thoroughly discuss the person’s medical history, current health condition, medications, and personal preferences.  In addition, we regularly review, evaluate, and update care plans to ensure changing needs are addressed.

As a family member, some of your concerns may be focused on your parent or loved one’s medications especially if they have had problems taking them on time, all the time, or incorrectly.  If you want to know if we offer medication management, the answer is yes, and we also offer pharmacy services.  We consider medication management to be an important service to our residents as we know many seniors with chronic health conditions take several prescription medications daily, which can result in missed or improper dosages.

Your initial meeting with our Wellness Director is also a good time to discuss concerns such as a parent who has been losing weight recently and who may not be eating properly.  Or you may worry they are not drinking enough fluids each day.  We have an answer to both problems as our five-star meal service is designed to be both nutritional as well as to temp the appetite of our most discerning residents.  To help keep our residents hydrated, we make sure they have plenty of opportunities to drink throughout the day.

Along with our compassionate care services and resort-style amenities, residents have a choice of well-designed floor plans that are sure to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  Within our 56 assisted living suites, we offer floor plans that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations that provide residents privacy, comfort, and security.  You will find our suites have high ceilings, kitchenettes, handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and private heating & air conditioning.  All that is missing to make it feel like home are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind a beloved family member as we are pet friendly!

For more information about the finest senior housing in Santa Fe, NM, we encourage you to contact us for more information about our beautiful community. We look forward to hearing from you.

Why Every Senior Should Play Brain Games

March 17, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Brain health is one of the most important priorities for most seniors. As we age, our brains can deteriorate due to all kinds of different factors. However, there are some things that you can do as an elderly person in assisted living to be proactive about your brain health. In this post, we will be discussing why every senior should play brain games.

Problem Solving

Brain games and puzzles are a great way to implement and strengthen your critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Puzzles specifically can be considered a “full body workout” for the brain, since they require the use of both the left and right sides of your brain. This can help you make sure that your whole brain is being engaged, so that you can get the full benefits of making time to play brain games/do puzzles. In addition to this, a study in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry states that “Older adults who regularly take part in word and number puzzles have sharper brains.”

Increased Dopamine

Another way that brain games can be great for any senior living in Phoenix is how much they can increase dopamine production. Every time you have a success/win in a brain game, your body automatically produces dopamine as a response. Dopamine is a chemical responsible for the regulation of your moods, concentration, and even memory! This means that by using brain games to help your brain produce dopamine, you can actually help strengthen your brain, and improve your ability to concentrate, be in a good mood, and remember things all at the same time.

Improved Memory

Brain games like crossword puzzles, sudoku, and other logic puzzles can be the perfect activities for improving memory in a fun, interactive way. These kinds of games improve memory with the use of easy math problems, bite sized memorization skills, logic, and more. By consistently challenging yourself and your brain with these and other types of brain games, you can strengthen your memory, and even other parts of your brain by learning to play brain games you have never played before!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on Family Members

March 06, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.  MorningStar offers experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.

Assisted Living Can Be a Healthier Lifestyle for Seniors Than Living Alone

February 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As people grow older, their needs change and many require help with daily personal care activities.  This can present a dilemma in families as some elderly seniors firmly state that they do not want to move into assisted living.  However, when the pressure to assume caretaking responsibilities continues to grow for family members and even safety is a concern, they may have to investigate alternatives.

It is important to know that research shows assisted living can be a healthier lifestyle for seniors than living alone.  They have access to 24/7 care as well as the benefits that come from socializing with others.  In addition, keep in mind that your parent’s home may need costly modifications to make it safe for them to continue to live there while assisted living communities are designed to address those needs.  Moreover, along with the assistance they need with daily personal care, communities such as MorningStar of Santa Fe provide a range of wellness programs and activities that support residents’ mental, physical, spiritual, and social connections.

In addition, wholesome, nutritional daily meals as well as housekeeping and laundry services mean your parents will have their basic needs met seamlessly.  Lastly, something often overlooked regarding assisted living is that with proper assistance, rather than your parent’s fear of losing their independence becoming true, they will actually get it back.  Also, by getting the needed assistance from the staff, it allows families to just enjoy spending time together without the added responsibility of being caregivers.

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Santa Fe provides the finest senior housing Santa Fe, NM has to offer, with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Options include 56 private assisted living suites in a variety of configurations including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In our Reflections Neighborhood, devoted to caring for seniors suffering from memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, we have 29 secure suites. Located on the city’s west side, near the intersection of St. Francis and St. Michael, our community has wonderful mountain views and is convenient for shopping and other services. Please contact us for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Assisted Living at MorningStar of Albuquerque

February 17, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

A Place for Mom’s website, a free service that helps families in their senior care search, reports the various services offered at assisted living communities can make it a healthier, safer living option for many seniors. As services typically involve 24/7 care, nutritional meals and wellness programs, it means residents receive the kind of care required to enhance their quality of life.

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Albuquerque provide the social connections necessary to seniors’ wellbeing as well as intellectual stimulation. The individual and their family get peace of mind knowing help is available when it is needed. Likewise, recent research shows assisted living communities may help seniors avoid falls as most are equipped with safety features such as grab bars and walk-in showers in the bathroom. MorningStar’s emergency call systems in each suite also means immediate help is at hand.

MorningStar of Albuquerque offers seniors assistance with another all-too common problem of medication mismanagement. The JAMA Internal Medicine journal published a study showing “80% of older adults regularly take at least two prescription medications, and 36% regularly take at least five prescription drugs.” The Department of Health and Human Services reports up to 55 percent of older adults are “non-compliant” in their medications including skipping doses or failing to take medication as prescribed. Either one can result in hospitalizations or deaths. Our medication management service helps to avoid these problems and includes dispensing as well as ordering prescription drugs.

MorningStar’s comprehensive care starts with residents having an individualized plan created to address their specialized needs. It is frequently reviewed and updated as required. Our day-to-day care is intended to help residents maintain a healthier lifestyle with nutritional meals, exercise classes, and life enrichment programs designed for their needs. 3 Reasons Pomegranates are Good for You

February 15, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Pomegranates are an often overlooked fruit, since they can be difficult to work with. However, these fruits are well worth the effort it takes to harvest all those beautiful, red jewels (called arils) inside. Here are 3 reasons pomegranates are good for seniors in assisted living in Phoenix, Arizona.

Full of Vitamins and Minerals

In their whole fruit form, pomegranates are packed with nutrients like antioxidants, fiber, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin C, and much more. All of these nutrients are vital for your body’s overall health; and keep all your systems functioning as they should. Antioxidants alone are fantastic compounds that help protect your cells from environmental wear and tear. However, keep in mind that you will actually only get all of these benefits by eating pomegranates—not just drinking the juice. It’s those little arils that really pack a healthy punch.

Good for Your Heart

Over the years, several studies have shown pomegranates to be instrumental in helping keep hearts healthy. Due to their anti-inflammatory properties and powerful antioxidants, pomegranates protect the heart in many ways. They do this by reducing damage from oxidative stress, helping regulate blood pressure, and contributing to the prevention of plaque buildup in the arteries. All of these benefits make pomegranates a powerhouse of heart health and cardiovascular wellness overall. If you’re a senior living in Phoenix, Arizona, then consider adding more raw, organic pomegranates into your diet if your primary physician gives you the OK.

Boosts Your Brain

Compounds in pomegranates, called “ellagitannins” have been found to work like antioxidants. This means that they reduce inflammation, but specifically inflammation related to the brain. Early research has also shown that these ellagitannins may also be able to help prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Ellagitannins are also being studied for their ability to assist the gut microbiome in creating a compound called “urolithin A.” Urolithin A has shown promise in reducing brain inflammation that can cause a variety of cognitive diseases as well. This means that eating pomegranates can be a delicious way to be more proactive with your brain health.

5 Anti-Alzheimer’s Habits

February 01, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Alzheimer’s is a very frightening diagnosis to receive, whether you’re a senior who lives independently, or in assisted living. While there are no fool-proof ways to completely prevent Alzheimer’s, there are many things you can do to keep from contributing to your chances.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your body overall, and can also increase your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. If you smoke, start doing everything you can to quit now, and stick to quitting. If you’re already a non-smoker, always be aware of secondhand smoke around you to avoid it.

Eat a Healthy Diet

What we fuel our body with is what helps it function. Bad fuel equals sub-par functioning in some way or another. This is why what we eat is so important. Speak with your doctor and/or a licensed nutritionist about what you need more of, and what you need to avoid in your diet. This will help your body become healthier, and allow it to function more efficiently.

Stay Active

Even if you don’t have a lot of energy or time, there are still ways that you can stay active. Proper exercise helps strengthen your body, and this strength also translates into your body’s systems, such as the nervous system, circulatory system, lymphatic system, and more. Staying active gives your body that much of an advantage to prevent many diseases, not just Alzheimer’s.

Exercise Your Brain

Keeping your brain busy, engaged, and solving problems is how you exercise it. Our cognitive functions are a bit like muscles in that the more we use them, the stronger they become. Try or learn something new every day, work on brain teasers, do puzzles, switch up your routine, etc. to keep your brain active and engaged. If you live in an assisted living community, ask staff and family for some brain games and activities so that everyone can try them!

Drink Sparingly

Drinking to excess is similar to smoking—it has no value to your body, and can actually cause life-threatening damage. Alcohol slows down the body’s functions and processes, including cognitive function. Consistent heavy drinking over time is hard on your brain, as well as the rest of your body; so stick to none or one small glass of red wine a day.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living Phoenix, AZ has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Arcadia provides outstanding assisted living and memory care.

3 Winter Fun Ideas for Seniors

January 30, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Winter is a beautiful time to get into a joyful spirit and have fun with family and friends. For seniors, this can be one of the best times to get together with their loved ones and celebrate holidays. Here are 3 awesome winter fun ideas for seniors; whether you are in independent or assisted living!

Carol Karaoke

Karaoke is a fun way to let loose and enjoy yourself with just about any group of people. Whether you know the words or not, it’s always nice to be able to just be silly with loved ones. A bonus of karaoke is that you can go with a theme, and do funny renditions of Christmas carols, or other holiday songs you may know. Karaoke is not only fun, it also requires some movement and reading; so it’s an amazing way to get your mind and body moving too!

Recipe Sharing

Winter time is a time of cozy, homemade meals with loved ones for most, but each family has different recipes. This is a wonderful opportunity to share a bit of your family’s traditions/culture with your friends! Try organizing a potluck with friends where everyone brings a family favorite along with a recipe written down for guests to take with them. This is a perfect way to share meaningful memories, delicious food, and even some family history. Nothing brings people together quite like food, and winter is the best time to share your most comforting recipes. This can even work in an assisted living community where everyone can meet each other’s families while trying their favorite foods!

Card Making

There are few things more special than receiving a handmade/handwritten card in the mail. However, many people simply don’t make cards anymore. This is a great opportunity to let your creativity shine, and try your hand at card making! Just about anyone can make a card, and there are no right or wrong ways to do it; so grab some supplies and give it a go! Paper, pens, markers, stickers, buttons, photos, colored pencils, scissors, glitter, stamps, popsicle sticks, and much more can all be used for card making; so don’t worry about not having enough of any one thing to use.

Learn More About Assisted Living at MorningStar of Albuquerque

January 23, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Many families mistakenly think senior living and particularly assisted living is just a more luxurious nursing home.  The fact is nursing homes are intended for people who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental conditions and require around-the-clock skilled nursing care.  Residents may be bedridden or in wheelchairs and receive ongoing palliative and preventative long-term care.

Assisted living is for seniors who are mostly independent but require help with what is known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include things like dressing, bathing and other personal care activities.  In some cases, people move into assisted living knowing that while they do not now need assistance with such tasks, they may need help in the near future.

Assisted living also makes sense for seniors who are looking for more companionship and love the security of knowing they are not alone.  As many assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Albuquerque have an emergency call system in each suite, you can rest easy knowing help is just minutes away.   Another perk of MorningStar of Albuquerque is we offer scheduled transportation so you will never have to worry about getting to your doctor’s appointments and other important errands.

Moreover, while MorningStar’s suites vary from studios to two-bedrooms, all our suites are smartly designed to make the most of the space they offer with high ceilings, large windows and both natural and overhead lighting.  In addition, residents often tell us what a relief it was to give up their large family homes that were hard to keep clean as well as all the maintenance required.  Residents also enjoy weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services.

Located on the northeast side of town, MorningStar of Albuquerque has wonderful mountain views and is convenient to medical facilities, shopping, and other services.  We have 48 stylish suites for assisted living and another 21 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. For more information on exceptional senior living in Albuquerque, please visit our website.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Another Dementia-Related Disease

January 18, 2023 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a dedicated, compassionate team and provides a safe, loving home for seniors suffering from dementia.  If you are looking for trusted memory care or assisted living in Albuquerque, NM please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest memory care and assisted living Albuquerque, NM offers.
