Having Surgery? Tips to Help Your Recovery

September 14, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Medical experts say there are things we can do before and after that may help encourage our recovery from surgery.  One of the first things Dr. Charla Fischer, an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Spine Center in New York City, is to think of surgery not as a sprint but rather as a full marathon or race.  She explains, "The surgery itself is just the first part of the race – there is also the recovery after. You want your body to be as prepared as possible, and exercise and good nutrition before and after surgery are part of this."

Before your surgery, your doctor may have you screened for a series of health problems including malnutrition, anemia, diabetes and pain, and then take steps to address them.  As exercise is another important part of getting in shape, you should talk to your surgeon about what is safe for you to do.  If you feel you need more guidance, ask if you are a candidate for a pre-habilitation program as it can show you the best type of exercise to safely strengthen your body in readiness for surgery.  Also, be sure to ask about what kind of exercise is safe to do after the surgery.  Doctors say typically the quicker you are to move, the quicker you get your strength back.

If you find yourself suffering from preoperative anxiety, ask your surgeon to walk you through the experience so you know what to expect including “pre-surgery, during surgery, the hospital stay and recovery after surgery," Dr. Fisher explains.   Your post-surgery diet should be rich in protein, and avoid sugary and processed foods.  Also stay hydrated.  Quitting smoking is another thing that offers big benefits in post-surgical outcomes as “smoking increases the risk of blood clots, reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it and increases stress on the heart.” Finally, if something doesn’t seem right about your recovery, contact your surgeon.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we provide high-quality assisted living and memory care as well as respite care.  Respite or temporary care is a great option for seniors who are recovering from surgery or an illness and require some day-to-day support services.  Along with providing a fully furnished suite, our respite residents are treated to three healthy and delicious daily meals created by our Executive Chef, 24-hour care and medication management.  Contact us to learn more about exceptional senior living in Albuquerque.

You’ve Made the Hardest Decision of Your Life

September 14, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

As adults, our lives do not fall short of requiring us to make difficult choices. That doesn’t stop some from feeling tougher than others.  If you have recently made the decision to move your parent or loved one into assisted living or memory care, you are probably dealing with emotions of shame, guilt, and worry. Unfortunately, the reality is that even if this is the best decision for their health and yours, the guilt and sadness can still feel looming. If you’re adjusting to this new reality, it’s important to understand why you’re feeling this way and where this guilt may have come from to better heal and accept your loved one’s new transition in life.

If you feel as though you’ve failed to care for your parent or loved one by moving them into assisted care, that simply isn’t true. You have had to make a difficult decision that required prioritizing two different levels of need. Accepting help from a facility that is suited and more knowledgeable in senior care is more selfless than you may be feeling. In assisted living, your parent or loved one will be able to have supervision, help with everyday tasks, communicate with their neighbors, and receive healthy meals all without fail. At home, you may have had to cut corners or other things seemed to fall by the wayside, leaving you to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Assisted living allows both you and your loved one to be cared for and experience relaxation.

Your parents don’t hate you. Perhaps when you were younger, they expressed the desire to never be in a nursing home or under supervised care. This sentiment may now be leaving you to feel guilty for going against their wishes. The truth is, while they may have never seen themselves within assisted care, they certainly wouldn’t want to feel like a burden to you or other family members, either. They couldn’t predict the future, and while they may be feeling a range of emotions and taking some time to adjust, they will come to understand that you made the right choice for them and you.

MorningStar of Sparks in Greater Reno is dedicated to creating a true home for its residents and helping both them and their families adjust to their new lifestyles. Contact us today to learn more about our senior living options in Sparks, Nevada. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you have. Our website also provides information on our company’s history and vision, as well as what sets us apart from other senior living facilities in Nevada.

It May be Time to Consider Assisted Living

September 12, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

For many seniors, there comes a time when they feel they are not living life on their own terms, and routine, day-to-day activities start becoming more difficult. To determine if assisted living is the right choice for a parent or spouse, experts say you need to consider the amount of care they require on a daily basis. If it is more personal care than he/she can get (or afford) with in-home services or in an independent living community, yet they don’t need 24-hour medical care and supervision, assisted living is the ideal option.

People often confuse assisted living with nursing homes; however, they are not the same thing. Nursing homes provide around-the-clock skilled nursing care while assisted living provides help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) to enhance residents’ quality of life within a residential setting.

While some families may experience sticker shock when first learning the cost of assisted living, you need to consider everything it includes. For example, MorningStar of Albuquerque’s monthly fee includes property taxes, utilities, security system, and the cost of maintenance inside and out. Daily meals are included in the fee as is housekeeping, scheduled transportation and an array of activities, entertainment and outings.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we like to think of assisted living as providing seniors “a little help from friends” to enable them to live life as independently as possible. Our beautiful community on the northeast side of the city offers assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Onsite amenities include a full salon, bistro, theatre, fitness room, massage room, and fireside patio. For seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to meet the needs of our most tender residents.

Along with assisted living and memory care, we also offer respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (up to a full month) so you can see if we are a good fit. For trusted assisted living Albuquerque, NM seniors can count on, visit our website or contact us for further information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Fall is a Great Time to Begin a Healthier Lifestyle

August 24, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

For large parts of the country, 2022 turned out to be a very hot summer. Now that fall is around the corner, most of us can look forward to more moderate temperatures, making it easier to enjoy the outdoors. Medical experts say spending time outside has a beneficial impact on our mental health as well as boost our immune system; and a nice sunny fall day can increase our vitamin D. In addition, engaging in many types of exercise is not only more enjoyable but safer in temperate weather.

Another healthy habit to incorporate into our fall routine is getting a flu shot. While we all know the dangers of COVID-19, influenza can also be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises “The single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like avoiding people who are sick, covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like flu.”

Fall is also time for healthy, immune boosting vegetables and fruits. Pumpkins are a good example of a tasty, nutritional vegetable. They are high in beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A, as well as vitamins C, E, potassium and fiber. The versatile pumpkin can be used in everything from chili to soups, pastas, breads, drinks and yummy desserts. Moreover, don’t forget to save the seeds as they are high in plant-based protein, fiber and magnesium.

For many, one of their favorite things about fall is the start of football season and enjoying the games with family and friends. Dieticians recommend considering healthier alternatives to traditional snacks on game day such as fresh vegetables and dip, homemade trail mix, hummus with veggies and fresh fruit. Not only are they more heart healthy but may help take off a few inches from your waistline.

At MorningStar Senior Living at RidgeGate, our primary goal is to provide seniors with carefree retirement years.  Our beautiful community offers residents a safe and comfortable home to age in place while taking advantage of resort-style amenities and a broad range of meaningful activities. Residents also enjoy healthy, nutritious meals inspired by our own Executive Chef and served in our full-service dining room. Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar’s Community in Phoenix

August 24, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Arcadia are not a nursing home. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful community offers 80 graciously appointed suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood provides 30 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. For trusted memory care or assisted living Phoenix seniors and their families can count on, visit our website or contact us for further information.

MorningStar Senior Living’s communities across the U.S. have a passionate commitment to serving seniors, earning a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Arthritis Is a Common Problem for Seniors

August 24, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

Contrary to popular belief, arthritis itself is not a single disease but rather a condition that includes over 100 different types. The word arthritis refers to joint inflammation. While older people are generally associated with arthritis pain, it can occur at any age. Read on to learn more about the symptoms of arthritis and how to treat it.

Symptoms of Arthritis

When a senior is experiencing arthritis, it is usually quite obvious because it can quickly become painful and even difficult to complete everyday tasks. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness, swelling of the joint area, and limited range of motion.

Severe arthritis can even cause permanent joint changes that can be visible. Seniors with arthritis are prone to knobby and crooked fingers. Oftentimes, the damage is visible on X-rays.

The symptoms of arthritis may come and go, which can make it difficult for seniors to know when to seek help. Caregivers of seniors in assisted living know the signs of arthritis and can urge a resident to seek help.

How to Treat Arthritis

There are several treatments for arthritis, and it may take a combination of them to ease the pain. Treatment may also vary from senior to senior depending on their circumstances. For example, treatments for a senior living independently may look different than treatments for a senior in memory care.

The first step in treating arthritis is to get an accurate diagnosis from your doctor. Since different treatments target different underlying causes of joint pain, it’s important to identify what is creating your symptoms.

Your primary care doctor should be able to help you sort out what is going on. In some cases, they may refer you to a specialist for a more precise diagnosis.

Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications or pain relievers to help with pain on a day-to-day basis. A more natural remedy is treating the sore area with heat and cold. Your doctor can help you create a heating and cooling regimen to achieve maximum relief.

Massage has been another effective tool shown to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis. In many cases, massage can be performed by a massage therapist, but there are techniques for self-massage as well.

Lastly, acupuncture has become an increasingly popular treatment for seniors with arthritis. Acupuncture has been used for various diseases for centuries, and it can be effective in relieving pain in joints.

Arthritis Is a Serious but Manageable Condition

Whether a senior is in independent living, in assisted living, or in a memory care community, there are treatments for arthritis that can work for them. With a little trial and error, most seniors with arthritis can learn to live with the diagnosis and carry on normally with their daily lives.

A Message to the Spouse or Adult Child of a Senior with Memory Loss

August 24, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Assisted living facilities cannot replace you, nor your love for your family member or spouse. While it may feel selfish or guilt inflicting to consider other living options for your loved one with extra needs, it’s quite the opposite. As a caregiver, you live a busy life; you have a family, a job, and household upkeep to look after. When you are living a preoccupied life while also trying to give care to an elderly loved one, it may feel as though you are falling short, with things slipping through the cracks. Assisted living facilities are an extra tool to supply better senior care, not a replacement for the family.

You might feel apprehensive about turning your role of caregiver over to someone else, despite your self-sacrifice taking its toll on your own health and well-being. Please know that at MorningStar of Sparks, we are here not to replace you, but to walk beside you and be a loving presence in your family's life. As an assisted living facility, MorningStar is aware of the time, dedication, and exhaustion families experience when caring for their loved one with memory deterioration. Our expertise is caring for the unique needs of our residents through empathy, community, and rigorous staff training based on morals and values.

Within its communities, MorningStar offers assisted living with support at various levels that varies depending on the resident. This support aims to help complete the activities of daily living, while still encouraging independence and exploration. 24-7 Care Managers are on site to ensure your comfort that your loved one’s safety is in prompt and able hands in the event an accident does occur.

MorningStar at RidgeGate Offers Specialized Memory Care

August 22, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

In addition to independent living and assisted living options, MorningStar at RidgeGate provides 29 suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Dedicated to providing the best memory care in the Lone Tree, CO area, our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to encourage residents’ independence as much as possible, while providing individualized care that stimulates or calms as the situation requires.

At MorningStar our approach to memory care is designed around our comprehensive program we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our philosophy encourages us to walk alongside a resident as we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia.  With insight and intentionality, we enter into our memory-impaired residents’ “purple world” to cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. We also educate the families of those afflicted with dementia on how to follow our lead and enter too.

Another important aspect of our unique methodology is to accept the diagnosis of dementia and embrace the fact (we know it is difficult) that this is the path we must take together.  By embracing a deep understanding of the disease, it allows us to embrace the necessary changes in our own communication style as well as physically embrace residents with the power of touch. And most importantly we embrace hope.

Finally, Lavender Sky explores a boundless variety of resourceful and individualized solutions for we recognize that what works today may not work tomorrow.  When memory care residents come to MorningStar at RidgeGate, we explore the person’s life including their background, interests and preferences to create a specialized care plan.

As you can see, memory care at our senior care community springs from a deep understanding of the disease and is offered with the utmost love and compassion.   Please visit our website to learn more.

MorningStar at RidgeGate’s mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Finding the Best Memory Care

August 22, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

Searching for memory care for a loved one that suits the person’s needs as well as the family’s is challenging at best. Knowing the person is dependent on getting the level of care they need for both their wellbeing and safety makes choosing the right home essential. Experts say start by taking your time to think about your loved one’s needs including daily personal care required such as dressing, toileting, bathing, etc. as well as any on-going medical needs.

Additionally, do they have mobility issues and use a wheelchair or a walker; or do they need assistance eating? If the person is known to wander, you will want a secure home to keep him or her safe including alarms on the doors. Another thing experts say is to let the community know if the person is prone to angry outbursts or other aggressive behaviors.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s needs, now consider if the homes you are looking at are equipped to handle those needs. Ask about living arrangements, dining service, and the level of daily help the person will receive. Moreover, does the community offer exercise programs and other meaningful activities?

Now inquire about the homes’ experience with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and the training the staff has in dementia care. What is the home’s philosophy of care and how do they approach difficult situations such as aggressive behaviors? Most of all does the staff seem caring and do residents appear to be content and well-looked after?

At MorningStar at Arcadia, our mission is to provide the best senior living Phoenix has to offer, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is geared toward residents’ care from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Preventing Falls with Balance Exercises

August 19, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Memory care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s statistics show that one in four Americans aged 65 years and older falls each year.  Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, and the number of falls will continue to increase as America’s baby boomers grow older.

While these are worrisome facts, experts say there are some simple exercises seniors can do to help prevent falls and maintain their independence. Remember a common injury caused by an elderly person falling is a hip fracture that can seriously impact their life.

Most balance exercises are easy to learn and can be done anywhere.  The Mayo Clinic explains that while many exercises including walking can help maintain good balance, there are specific exercises targeted at improving a senior’s balance and stability.  They do caution however that if you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, to get your doctor's okay before starting balance exercises.

Examples of balance exercises include: standing on one foot, walking heel to toe, back leg raises, and side leg raises.  To do the standing on one foot exercise, stand behind a sturdy chair; gripping for balance, lift one foot off the floor.  Hold for 10 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg.  Repeat the exercise several times and increase the repetition as your strength increases.

Walking heel to toe is done by positioning the heel of one foot in front of the toes of the other foot.  Your heel and toes should be touching.  Now select a spot ahead of you and focus on it to help keep you steady as you walk.  Try to step forward for as many as 20 steps.  Be sure to ask your healthcare provider for other balance exercises.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we promote a healthy engaged lifestyle which includes an onsite fitness center and exercise classes to make it easy for residents to keep moving.  Our various enrichment activities and wellness programs are designed to enhance and support our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website for further information on the finest memory care and senior housing Santa Fe, NM has to offer.

This post is for informational purposes only.  Please consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercises.

We proudly provide the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  If you are looking for exceptional senior housing, Santa Fe, NM’s MorningStar community may be your answer.

Help Aging Parents Organize Important Documents

August 19, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

In the event of a medical emergency or illness, to file income taxes, or apply for state or federal benefits, experts say it is helpful and maybe even lifesaving for seniors to have their paperwork in order. Important documents to have available to a family member or trusted friend include property deeds, history of financial income and medical information. For example, Stuart Furman, A Place for Mom legal expert and elder attorney, explains if your parents are eligible to apply for veterans’ benefits or Medicaid, they will need proof of past income and financial resources.

If you are the designated person, start by helping your parents compile a record of their bank accounts as well as sources of financial income including pensions, 401(k) information, and annuity contracts. In addition, help them organize information regarding savings bonds, stock certificates, or brokerage accounts. File these documents along with all property deeds and titles to vehicles in a home safe where they are secure. Files should also include several years of income taxes as well as a list of credit cards and outstanding loans or debts owed to them.

If your parents have a living will and/or a durable power of attorney, you should have a copy as it is important in the case of a medical emergency to be able to quickly get your hands on such documents. Other things medical professionals say are important to get your hands on quickly is a list of medications your parents are taking, their medical history and insurance cards. Other types of documents to safely file or to create include end of life planning and estate planning.

Helping a Loved One Transition to an Assisted Living Community

August 19, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Many times, a move to assisted living for an elderly loved one is due to an event such as a recent hospitalization for a fall or a worsening medical condition. This means the person does not have the time to process the move from a beloved home, and the sudden change may be very upsetting. Even for seniors who have had the time to plan a move into assisted living, it may be challenging.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we know the many benefits assisted living communities such as ours afford to residents; but at the same time, we recognize any change is difficult and moving into assisted living is certainly one of those events. In addition to our own experience, experts also offer suggestions to families on how best to support their loved one during the transition.

It may ease the transition for the person to get as familiar as possible with the new community and staff before the move.  Also, after a decision is made, let your loved one decide what furniture and keepsakes they want to move with them and help them decorate.   If possible, arrange furniture and decorations in a similar way and display photos and other keepsakes to make the new place feel like “home.”

Keep in mind the person may feel abandoned, or frustrated with their perceived loss of independence and decision making, and have a hard time adjusting to a change in their routine. Give the person plenty of support during the first days and weeks at the community, but don’t overdo it. This could actually be counterproductive and prevent a loved one from making an adjustment. Instead, emphasizing the move is an opportunity to start a new chapter in their life.

In some cases, seniors make a quick adjustment and recognize the advantage of no longer worrying about their homes’ maintenance or preparing meals. They like the ease of a more robust social life and feel a peace of mind knowing help is around whenever they need it. For others it may take a little more time.

In addition to assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque offers individualized memory care, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (from a week to a full month) to see if we are a good fit.  Please visit our website for information on our company’s history, vision, and mission as well as what sets us apart from other senior living in Albuquerque.

Finding Thoughtful Gifts for an Elderly Loved One Can Be a Challenge

August 15, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

Trying to find thoughtful gifts for an elderly parent or grandparent can be a challenge.  If they live in a senior living community that provides for many of their needs or an apartment without much extra space, they probably do not need anything that takes up a lot of room or already has it.

This is where it helps to be creative, and remember gifts of your time often mean the most to an elderly person. However, there are some good gift ideas you may not have thought about and would be appreciated by your loved one. One idea for a mom or dad who loves coffee but doesn’t want to brew a whole pot is a single-serve coffee maker. Add in a few boxes of single-serve cups to use with the maker including hot chocolate or flavored coffees in a selection they would enjoy.

If they haven’t gotten a smart speaker such as an Amazon Echo yet, it can make a great gift for someone with mobility challenges as it is voice operated. They can play music, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, control compatible smart home devices, and more. To get them started, put together a cheat sheet of verbal commands they can use.

Other ideas include a heated massage pillow to relieve neck and back pain or a sleep sound machine to help with a good night’s sleep. A gift basket filled with their favorite treats or products to pamper themselves with like fancy soaps, lotions and a couple of pairs of non-skid fuzzy socks are always appreciated. Another hit would be a recordable book from the grandkids.

For exceptional senior living, Albuquerque, NM seniors and their families are encouraged to consider MorningStar. Our all-inclusive assisted living and memory care community offers a range of luxury amenities, while providing all the warmth and welcoming comforts of home. Every suite is well designed to maximize space and options include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. All have high ceilings, wall-to-wall carpeting, large windows and safety features such as handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Please contact us for more information about MorningStar of Albuquerque and be sure to ask us about our Move-in Specials.

Assisted Living and Holistic Care Available to Greater Reno

July 27, 2022 by MS Arcadia in assisted living

When it’s time for us to make the decision to move our parents or loved ones to assisted living, we may be faced with defiance or frustration; whether from our loved one or other people around us. Often, parents may feel as though they are strong enough to live without being watched over. However, if you’ve noticed an alarming change in their behavior, routine, or ability to complete household tasks alone, it may be time to discuss assisted living senior care.

An important part of providing exceptional senior assisted living services is helping residents to maintain their independence. Adults, no matter the age, don’t want to lose their ability to make decisions on their own. It is important that a senior living facility should encourage autonomy while also overseeing daily tasks, such as laundry, taking medication, and eating routine meals that are completed safely. Not only do we want our residents to complete their daily necessities, but they should also feel fulfilled and excited to start each day. To achieve that goal, MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks offers “WellStar,” our signature activities program for physical, social, spiritual and emotional wellness.

“WellStar” creates and promotes a wide array of activities for our residents at MorningStar of Sparks. Whether physical, intellectual, spiritual, or social, our Life Enrichment Teams present creative ways to stay active and productive for man’s good and God’s glory. Tapping their unique talents and experiences, some residents choose to lead special interest clubs themselves. These activities give a sense of purpose and help to build community within our senior living and assisted living residents.

Our entire team is engaged in finding ways to build that spirit of community, one loving relationship at a time. Even for respite care residents (here for a short recuperative stay) or our retreat residents (here for a trial stay), there’s the promise of new friendships. And for the most tender among us, our memory care residents, each day presents the opportunity to stimulate the brain and find moments of spontaneous joy.

To learn more about MorningStar’s “WellStar” program and other amenities we offer in Assisted Living in Reno please contact us. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you have. Meet MorningStar’s European-Trained Executive Chef: Jacques Cornelis

July 25, 2022 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

It is important to maintain healthy and regular eating habits when living in a senior living community. If your elder parent or loved one is struggling to feed themselves or you’re noticing a great change in their diet, it may be time to consider assisted living. Assisted living is a great choice for elders that can maintain most daily activities but may need help with routines such as eating regular meals and cooking by themselves.

MorningStar of Sparks believes diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. Food can be utilized as a healing medicine and is one of the great joys of living and should be enjoyed with family or within a community. Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible. We also understand diets alter as we age. Our Chefs are trained in how best to modify menus and recipes to accommodate changing needs and tastes. Our nutritional choices include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat for residents to self-manage.

Jacques Cornelis is MorningStar of Sparks’ European-Trained Executive Chef that is new to senior living and is excited to work with the great crew in the kitchen. Jacques first entered a professional kitchen at 14. For the next four years, it was one day of school and four days of culinary apprenticeship at De Watermolen, a Michelin-starred restaurant. Jacques worked ten years in the finest restaurants in Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. On why French cuisine holds the world’s stage, he explains simply, “It’s the sauces. They can make the plainest dish extraordinary. Besides, France offers the greatest of food baskets to work with.” In 2007, Jacques won Iron Chef’s “Blazing Pans” event at the Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival, pitted against the chef of North Star.

On the deep satisfaction of working in senior living, Jacques comments this way: “I’ll be 64 next month. So I have a very good understanding of the special requirements of senior clients. In other words, I know what rings their bell.” But give Jacques any audience and watch him perform. He loves walking to the dining room and hearing feedback. He regularly hosts made-to-order omelette stations and monthly cooking demonstrations in our community.
