Hearing Loss in Older Adults

January 15, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) reports that one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those 75 and older have some difficultly hearing.  This can cause seniors to experience difficulty understanding and following doctor's orders, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms.” Hearing loss can leave people feeling isolated as they have problems following and engaging in conversations with family and friends.

The medical term for hearing loss is presbycusis; and typically starts gradually by affecting the ability to hear higher pitched sounds.  A person may feel like the volume is loud enough on the TV but the dialogue is mumbled. Experts explain this is caused by the loss of nerve hair cells in the Cochlea or the deterioration of other parts of the inner ear or auditory nerves.   Generally age-related hearing loss affect both ears equally.

High blood pressure and diabetes, both common health conditions in older adults, can also affect the hearing as does some types of chemotherapy drugs.  Furthermore people of all ages are at risk of hearing loss with long-term exposure to loud noise such as on a jobsite.

If you or a loved one seems to be having trouble hearing, NIDCD has a checklist of questions to answer.  For example, do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them?  Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper? Do you feel restricted or limited by a hearing problem?   If the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, discuss the problem with your health care provider. They will refer you to an otolaryngologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and neck.  If a problem is found, you will be referred to an audiologist who will determine the type and degree of hearing loss. From there you may be fitted for a hearing aid.

This blog is for informational purposes only. For any health issues and concerns, please consult your health care provider.

Is Your Loved One Safe Living Alone?

January 14, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Many older adults cling to the idea of living in their own home and stubbornly refuse to accept the fact that their declining medical conditions may be putting their very safety at risk in their present living situation.  This is when family members need to step in and help make some decisions.

In the best scenario, we typically want to make changes in things as important as our living situation with careful thought, but unfortunately, many older adults do not have such plans in place.  This reluctance to plan ahead means lots of families are unaware of today’s various senior living options, which include assisted living, independent living, skilled nursing facilities, family group homes, memory care, and continuing care communities.

As you sort through the best care options for your parent, start by honestly assessing their medical conditions, their mobility, and care requirements.  In addition experts say to try and determine what the future holds for your loved one as you do not want to get them settled into a home and quickly realized it is not equipped to provide the care they now need.

One senior living option is assisted living, which is designed to provide your parent help with their ADLs (activities of daily living) in order to allow them to live as independently as possible.  Most assisted living communities have tiered levels of care, which means as your parent’s needs increase the community will be able to address them.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, a Phoenix assisted living community, we work hard to create a true “home” for our residents.  We define health and well-being holistically and offer services and programming that supports the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Please visit our website for information regarding our various care services and amenities as well as pricing and availability.  Then use our online link to set up a tour.

Learn More About Assisted Living

January 14, 2020 by MS Arcadia

The American Healthcare Association defines assisted living as “part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”  So rather than taking away the independence of seniors assisted living actually helps residents to maintain their independence while giving them the care they need to live comfortably and safely.

Please remember assisted living is not a nursing home.  It is a community designed to meets the needs and preferences of the residents and to give them their dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, choice and safety.  While each community has its own personality, assisted living typically addresses the needs of its residents with 24-hour care services, daily meals and wellness activities.   In fact, it is often more cost effective not to mention more convenient than employing a group of home health care providers.

If you are looking for the best senior living Albuquerque has to offer, we encourage you to visit our website to learn why MorningStar of Albuquerque is a step above other communities. Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease or Normal Aging?

January 13, 2020 by MS Arcadia

As we age, many of us experience occasional memory loss.  While it may be worrisome, most likely it is just a normal part of growing older.  In the case of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, a common indicator of the disease is memory loss that happens so often it disrupts daily life.  The Alzheimer’s Association lists 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s and recommends if you or a loved one has any of them, to see your health care provider.

The first sign that you or a loved one’s memory loss may be a sign of a bigger problem is constantly forgetting new information.  Memory loss may include: needing to have the same information repeated over and over; forgetting important dates and events; and relying more and more on family members or memory aids to handle things.

Another way memory loss can adversely affect a person’s life is when it becomes difficult to problem solve.  He or she may find it hard to do things they have done well in the past such as keeping track of monthly bills or following a recipe.  Some individuals with Alzheimer’s have problems losing their way when traveling familiar routes or keeping track of the month or season of the year.  Also, a person may start putting things away in odd places and not remember where they put them. We encourage you to read the Alzheimer’s Association’s full list of common signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our goal is to provide the best senior living Albuquerque offers, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Our beautiful community offers 21 secure memory care suites in our Reflections Neighborhood designed to care for those in the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages. Research Suggests a Link between Alzheimer’s & Diabetes

January 13, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Recent studies have suggested a connection between diabetes and Alzheimer’s but researchers do not yet fully understand the connection.  Moreover while not all of the research has confirmed a link, researchers say that people with diabetes, especially type 2, appear to be at higher risk for eventually developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

One of the things not yet known is whether taking steps to prevent or control diabetes helps to reduce your risk of cognitive decline.  However we do know that one of the complications of diabetes is damage to the body’s blood vessels as well as the fact that diabetes is one of the risk factors for vascular dementia, which causes a reduced or blocked blood flow to the brain.

Scientists first suspected a connection between Alzheimer’s and diabetes when they realized that the changes in the brain were very similar; and it has been hypothesized that each of these conditions may fuel the damage caused by the other.   With new research, experts hope to get a better understanding of the connection between the two diseases. “That link may occur as a result of the complex ways that type 2 diabetes affects the ability of the brain and other body tissues to use sugar (glucose) and respond to insulin.”

We also know that diabetes increases the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which may eventually lead to full blown dementia.  In addition MCI can also appear years earlier in people who later are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

At one of most trusted senior living communities in Santa Fe, NM; MorningStar of Santa Fe provides the area compassionate assisted living and memory care.  Please contact us to learn more about pricing and availability.

Balance Exercises Help Seniors to Prevent Falls

January 12, 2020 by MS Arcadia

It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent falls as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.

As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging. Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure. Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do balance-training exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercise can improve your mobility.  While it is helpful to join a class that offers balance-training exercises, there are also exercises that can be done throughout the day right at home.  One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter. If you need to, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off.   Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar at Arcadia strives to be the best in Phoenix assisted living, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously.  Our residents have many opportunities to stay active including various exercise classes or working out in the fitness room.  See our website to learn more.

When is It Time for a Senior to Stop Driving?

January 12, 2020 by MS Arcadia

From time to time, we hear news stories about elderly people causing serious car accidents due to negligence.  This typically reignites the on-going debate about “when is it time for a senior to stop driving?”  Also it is important to keep in mind that seniors are more likely to be injured in an accident as well as more likely to die from their injuries.

Obviously being told you should no longer drive is a very sensitive topic for an elderly person still driving.  To them, it represents more than just getting from one place to another but their independence and a way of life.  So before you take away your elderly parent’s driving privileges, there are some things you can do to check that their driving is up to today’s road conditions.

The first thing you can do is to get in the car and take a ride with them.  Experts say some driving issues signal serious problems while others less so.  For instance if your loved one is confusing the gas pedal with the brake, this is serious and requires immediate action.  Other things to look for are problems with left-hand turns, changing lanes, or driving either too fast or too slow. Once you are out of the car, check for signs of new scrapes and dents.

Many older adults realize their driving abilities are not what they used to be and make the decision on their own to stop driving at night or on freeways.  They also will not drive on icy and snowy roads or in the rain. Some even make other adjustments such as not making left hand turns or avoiding busy roads with lots of lanes and traffic.

One of the many advantages of senior living is that most offer services for transportation.  This ensures your loved one will get to their doctor appointments safely and any other errands they need to do.  If you would like to learn more about the best senior living in Santa Fe, NM, please contact the MorningStar of Santa Fe Assisted Living & Memory Care community.  We welcome any questions and will be more than happy to speak with you and your family.

Those with Dementia Benefit from a Connection with Animals

January 08, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Research has shown that people with dementia benefit physically, emotionally, socially and mentally from a connection between humans and animals.  Whether they are a furry, feathery or scaly friend, it appears that animals have the ability to help those with dementia in a number of ways.  In numerous studies, therapeutic animals have drastically improved dementia symptoms and helped to elevate mood, decrease behavioral problems, improve nutrition, increase social interaction, and provide a calming effect.

Many people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia lose the ability to initiate and maintain social relationships as the disease progresses.  Dr. Mara Baun has extensively studied the psychological benefits pets provide to those with Alzheimer's disease. Her research found therapy animals “help decrease the symptoms of aggression and help increase socialization. The presence of a therapy pet helped decreased symptoms of "sundowning" in Alzheimer's patients.”

Dr Baun's sundowning study found that a therapy dog can provide “missed physical contact to a patient with Alzheimer's disease. It matters little to the pet if the person's body has deteriorated or if the stories are repeated over and over.”  The animal’s complete acceptance and non-verbal communication can be soothing for patients. In addition, animals offer unconditional love and endless forgiveness.

At MorningStar at Arcadia, we strongly believe in the power of animals’ unconditional love and periodically bring in therapy animals to visit with our memory care residents.  In addition to our loving, compassionate memory care, we also offer assisted living, and in case you wondered, MorningStar is a pet friendly community!   If you are looking for one of the best assisted living homes Phoenix AZ has to offer, we encourage you to visit our website to learn why our residents are proud to call MorningStar “home.”

MorningStar at Arcadia’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  Set in a loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Arcadia invites you to schedule a tour of one of the best assisted living homes Phoenix AZ offers.

Hobbies Help You Stay Interested in Life

January 05, 2020 by MS Arcadia

Spending time doing things you enjoy can not only help you to stay more interested in life but may also be good for your health.  Many hobbies are enjoyed at any age and can help to exercise your mind or body (many do both) as well as provide social interactions.

Creative hobbies such as painting, sculpting, photography, scrapbooking and knitting or the performing arts are fun activities for seniors and provide lots of opportunity for socializing.  Another healthy hobby is caring for a pet according to A Place for Mom.  They explain that, “Pets provide a comfort system and actually produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that helps to lower levels of the stress-inducing hormone cortisol and increase the production of the feel-good hormone serotonin.”  Studies have shown that pet ownership may help lower cholesterol, fight depression and help protect against heart conditions.

Stretching exercises and yoga are also popular with seniors as they help improve flexibility and movement and build balance as well as improve blood flow to the brain, heart and circulatory system. Yoga classes are designed for many physical fitness levels such as chair yoga for those unable to get down on the floor.  Joining a walking group is another fun way to exercise and spend time with friendly faces.

Looking for the finest senior living Reno-Sparks has to offer?  At MorningStar of Sparks, we specialize in providing our residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Every day we offer a variety of fun and engaging activities that may include things such as exercise groups, craft classes, games, painting classes, and the knitting club.

Please visit our website to learn more about our loving community and while you are there, be sure to take a look at our Community Amenities and Suite Features & Floor Plan pages.

Moving to an Assisted Living Community

January 01, 2020 by MS Arcadia

At MorningStar of Sparks, we recognize for many seniors that change can be both difficult and challenging.  While moving to an assisted living community may be the best decision for the person and their family, this doesn’t mean there won’t be a transition period.

Many seniors mistakenly think touring senior living communities, deciding on one, figuring out budget considerations, and perhaps selling the family home is the most difficult part of moving to community living.  However, experts report it can typically take anywhere between 30 to 90 days before a senior feels comfortable in their new home, but there are few things that can be done to help the process go more smoothly.

To start with it is important to make sure your loved one’s new home is filled with familiar and beloved objects such as personal photos, books, and knick-knacks.  As the new resident, you should try to keep a positive attitude toward the move and be a good sport about joining community activities and socializing with others.  After all making new friends can make all the difference in the world.  Furthermore, remember the staff is there to help and will be more than glad to answer all of your questions.

As a family member, be open to listening to your loved one’s fears and concerns.  While you will want to visit, be sure not to be “too supportive” as the senior needs to find their own way in their new home.  Experts say it is also important to not waste time feeling guilty about moving your loved one into assisted living.  Remember it is a safe place for them to find comfort, wellness and community.  Please visit MorningStar of Sparks’ website to learn more the finest independent and assisted living Reno or Sparks offers.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Sparks, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Planning a Holiday Visit with a Loved One Suffering from Dementia?

December 16, 2019 by MS Arcadia

If you have wondered how to make the most of your time when you visit a relative or friend suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, take some tips from the experts.  They have the experience to help your visit go more smoothly.

Their first tip is to adjust to your loved one as they are now and do not expect to have the same type of conversations with them as you once did.  As dementia care specialist Vivian Green Korner explains, “Conversations may become less intellect to intellect and more emotion to emotion.”

Another thing, focus on what the person still has rather than focusing on what they have lost.  They may enjoy stories about the past as well as love hearing music that reminds them of when they were young.  Anthony Cirillo, president of The Aging Experience and host of the Virtual Summit for Caregivers, say that, “Music activates something in people no matter how advanced their dementia.”  Also, it may be helpful to bring photos, books or even tasty treats to share with your loved one.

In addition, don’t waste time asking a lot of questions that may just confuse the person, instead, just live in the moment.  Talk about things you are seeing such as the color of the leaves on a tree outside the window or a pretty picture in the room.  If the person appears to be getting agitated, suggest getting up and taking a little walk as often a change of scenery can help to change their mood.

Remember it is important to make eye contact as a lot of your communication with the person will be non-verbal.  Experts also suggest touching a person before you start to speak as touch is a powerful communicator especially as their verbal skills are starting to diminish.

At MorningStar of Sparks, our mission is to provide seniors the best independent and assisted living Reno–Sparks offers, which includes 32 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  As dementia specialists, we understand the disease and provide care that treats the individual with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Please see our website for more.

The Holidays May be the Best Time to Get Serious about Senior Living

December 15, 2019 by MS Arcadia

You may not have thought about it before but the holidays can be a good time to make plans for a move into senior living for your parent or another loved one.   Your family members are already gathered together to celebrate the holidays and also many of them may have more free time available than usual.

If the family has already been making plans to move mom or dad into an assisted living community, December is a good time to set up a tour to view a couple of the places you and your parent are most interested in.  Remember the home is probably brightly decorated and holding lots of special activities that should help to make it look most appealing to your parent.  Also with more of the family around, everyone can take responsibility toward helping them make decisions for their future.

In addition if you live out-of-town, getting together with an elderly loved one in person may reveal the fact that they do need more assistance in their life.  It is most likely the reason interest in senior living communities tends to be high during January and February. If you beat the rush and start your search in December, mom or dad may even have more choices in suite styles.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, our community is a true home that provides compassionate assisted living and memory care. We proudly offer programming and services that support the whole person: body, mind and spirit; and truly believe that our ability to learn and to contribute is ageless.  In fact part of our mission statement reads to “value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence.”  Please visit our website to set up a tour or to request information on pricing and availability.

MorningStar of Santa Fe offers the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living in Santa Fe, NM.
