How to Develop a Gratitude Practice

August 09, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

There’s something truly special about taking a moment each day to reflect on what we’re grateful for. Practicing gratitude can bring more joy and peace into our lives, making it a habit well worth cultivating. For many seniors, developing a gratitude practice has become an uplifting part of their daily routine, offering a sense of connection and positivity.

Starting a gratitude practice doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes to appreciate the small things that often go unnoticed—like a warm cup of tea or the sound of laughter nearby. Here are a few tips for getting started and making gratitude a consistent part of your life.

Begin with a Gratitude Journal

One effective way to kickstart your gratitude practice is by keeping a journal. Set aside a few minutes each day to write down three things you’re thankful for. They don’t have to be big; even the smallest moments count. Alice, who recently moved into assisted living Phoenix, found that jotting down her thoughts in the morning sets a positive tone for the day.

Embrace Mindfulness

Mindfulness and gratitude go hand in hand. Being present in the moment helps us notice and appreciate the world around us. Whether it’s enjoying the beautiful views or savoring a delicious meal, mindfulness can deepen our sense of gratitude. It’s about taking time to truly experience these moments and recognize their value.

Share Your Gratitude

Expressing gratitude can be even more powerful when shared with others. A heartfelt thank you to a friend or a shared appreciation during a group gathering can strengthen our connections. In our senior living Phoenix community, sharing what we’re thankful for during meals often brings smiles and fosters a sense of camaraderie.

Create a Ritual

Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine can make it easier to maintain. Consider pairing it with another activity you do regularly, like morning coffee or evening relaxation. Jim, one of our community members, reflects on gratitude while tending to the garden, finding peace and fulfillment in this simple ritual.

Join a Gratitude Group

Having others to share your gratitude journey with can be motivating and inspiring. Joining or forming a gratitude group offers a chance to exchange stories and insights, creating a sense of community and support. Many residents in retirement communities Phoenix gather regularly to discuss what they’re grateful for, gaining new perspectives and ideas.

Ultimately, developing a gratitude practice is about finding what works best for you and making it a part of your everyday life. As you continue to embrace gratitude, you may discover a greater sense of joy and contentment. We’d love to hear what you’re grateful for and how it has impacted your life.

The Importance of Hydration: Tips for Seniors

August 07, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Greetings from our cozy community! We often find ourselves gathered around the table or enjoying the fresh air outside, chatting about the little things that keep us healthy and happy. One topic that always pops up is hydration, especially since it’s something many of us need to pay a bit more attention to as we age.

Water might not be the most exciting topic, but it’s essential. Our bodies rely on water to function properly, and it’s especially important for us seniors to stay hydrated. Over the years, I’ve noticed that many of my fellow residents, including myself, don’t feel as thirsty as we used to. It’s not just us—many older adults experience this, which makes it easy to become dehydrated without realizing it.

Understanding Dehydration

Dehydration can creep up on us. Some signs to watch out for include dry mouth, feeling tired or dizzy, and darker urine. One of our neighbors, Bob, told me about a time he was feeling particularly fatigued. It turned out he just needed to up his water intake. A simple fix that made him feel so much better!

Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated

Let’s talk about some practical tips to help us all stay hydrated:

  1. Keep Water Handy: Having a water bottle by your side is a simple way to remind yourself to sip throughout the day. I keep mine with me, especially when enjoying the beautiful weather here in senior living Phoenix.

  2. Make Water More Exciting: If plain water doesn’t sound appealing, try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or cucumber. It’s a little trick we’ve picked up that makes drinking water feel like a treat.

  3. Drink with Meals: Make it a habit to have a glass of water with every meal and snack. It’s a routine that’s easy to remember and keeps you hydrated throughout the day.

  4. Eat Water-rich Foods: Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges are not only delicious but also help you stay hydrated. We often enjoy these as snacks or part of our meals.

  5. Check Your Urine Color: A quick glance at your urine color can tell you a lot about your hydration level. Aim for a light yellow color.

Hydration in Our Community

In our retirement communities Phoenix, we’ve made hydration a fun and social part of our lives. Whether we’re sharing a pitcher of infused water or enjoying a fruity snack together, we make it easy and enjoyable to stay hydrated. It’s a great way to remind each other of its importance and to keep our spirits high.

For anyone considering assisted living Phoenix or looking to stay healthy at home, remember that staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to care for yourself. If you have any personal tips or stories about hydration, we’d love to hear them. Sharing these little pieces of wisdom is what makes our community truly special.

Here’s to staying hydrated and feeling our best every day!

Depression in Older Adults

July 26, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Depression can affect people at any age including senior citizens.  According to Web MD, “Late-life depression affects about 6 million Americans age 65 and older, but only 10% receive treatment for depression.”  They suggest the reason for this may be that the symptoms seniors display are often ignored or assumed to be a result of illnesses and medications or just a normal part of growing older.

There are many reasons why seniors suffer from depression including major changes in their lives such as retirement, the death of a spouse, illnesses, disabilities and social isolation.  People suffering from very painful, disabling, or life-threatening illnesses are especially vulnerable to depression or the worsening of symptoms.  Furthermore, depression can be caused by medications that are commonly prescribed to the elderly including blood pressure medication, beta-blockers, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, calcium-channel blockers and medication for Parkinson’s as well as others.

Suffering from depression prevents seniors from enjoying life as they used to and can be the cause of a change in appetite, problems sleeping and impact physical health.  HelpGuide.org says, while sadness is one sign of depression, some seniors do not recognize or admit to feelings of sadness.  Rather someone may “complain instead of low motivation, a lack of energy, or physical problems.  In fact, physical complaints, such as arthritis pain or worsening headaches, are often the predominant symptom of depression in the elderly.”

All too often seniors just accept depression as a part of the aging process but there are steps you can take to help yourself or your loved one.  You first need to talk to your health care provider to rule out other problems, and then perhaps you need to make changes in your lifestyle.  Experts suggest that isolation and inactivity can make depression worse and they recommend getting involved in physical, mental and social activities.

Taking Your Blood Pressure at Home

July 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Many of us have had our blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office and were surprised when it turned out to be higher than we expected it to be. If this has happened to you, you may be experiencing something known as “white-coat hypertension,” meaning a higher than warranted reading during a medical appointment.

Doctors say one of the best ways to ensure you do not have elevated blood pressure, is to take your blood pressure at home a number of times. You may also be asked by your healthcare provider to track your blood pressure to see if you should be put on medication or adjust medication to reach a target number.

It is important to do it correctly to ensure readings are accurate. Experts say start by buying a validated monitor and do not buy one that uses the finger or wrist as they are not as accurate as upper-arm cuffs. If you have a much smaller or larger upper-arm, look for one appropriately sized.

Other things to consider are to not take your blood pressure when you are stressed and to wait at least 30 minutes after eating, smoking or exercising. Odd as it sounds you will get a more accurate reading if you empty your bladder right beforehand. Sit comfortably with feet flat on the floor and support your arm near heart height. Now wait a few minutes. A good strategy for a true representation of BP is to take 4 readings a day for 7 days – twice in the morning and twice at night. Let your doctor know your findings.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we are honored to provide a level of assisted living that allows seniors to live rich, independent lives while receiving the personalized care they need. Are Memory Problems Interfering With Your Life?

July 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Do you feel as if memory problems are interfering with your life or have family members started to notice? Medical experts say there may be a distinction between a person noticing memory loss and others becoming aware of it as this could signal a bigger problem and be an early sign of dementia.

The Harvard Medical School explains the best place to start understanding the problem is to talk to your doctor. While they may not have the proper training to do extensive screening for MCI (mild cognitive impairment), they can rule out other things causing your memory loss such as medications you take or a recent head injury. Steps you can take on your own to improve cognitive function include getting enough sleep each night, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress.

After your own physician has completed an examination, and nothing appears to explain your memory loss, it is time to see a specialist. They, or your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or hospital should be able to recommend a behavioral neurologist, geriatric psychiatrist or other specialist who works in this field. He or she will probably start with a series of written, on the computer, or oral tests to “assess memory, reasoning, attention, language, visual functions, motor functions, and social functions (such as empathy and knowing how to behave appropriately in social situations).”

They will check for “abnormalities in muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, eye movement, and the pupils’ reaction to light, which can signal abnormalities in specific areas of the brain.” In addition, the doctor will check for Parkinson’s, a stroke or tumors, and will probably schedule a hearing and vision test. If indicated, you may have advanced testing such as PET scans or your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers checked for signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Santa Fe has suites devoted to the individualized care of those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our Reflections Neighborhood was designed to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to celebrate and elevate life. Poor Sleep Affects Your Health

July 17, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.

In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.

One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night’s sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”

Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is like being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.

Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.

If you are looking for memory care or assisted living in Albuquerque, NM, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.  Our home offers beautiful surroundings and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living at MorningStar of Albuquerque.

Remote Health Monitoring Systems for Independent Senior Living

July 03, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Let’s talk about an exciting topic today: remote health monitoring systems for independent senior living. This innovative technology is changing the game when it comes to staying healthy and connected, and it’s particularly beneficial for seniors living on their own. So, let’s dive in and explore the amazing advantages of remote health monitoring systems and how they’re transforming senior communities in assisted living Phoenix.

The Upside of Remote Health Monitoring Systems

So, what’s the big deal with these systems? Well, they offer a fantastic sense of reassurance for seniors and their families. By monitoring vital signs and medication adherence, these systems provide an extra layer of safety and security. Imagine having the peace of mind of knowing that help is just a click away if needed!

How Do These Systems Work, Anyway?

These systems use wearable fitness trackers, smart home sensors, and mobile health apps to collect and transmit health data. This data is then analyzed by healthcare professionals in real time, who can intervene if necessary. This human touch ensures that the system is not just a set of algorithms, but a comprehensive health monitoring solution.

Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit

Now, for those of you considering embracing this technology, here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Look for user-friendly devices and interfaces that will make you feel free to try to figure them out.

  • Ensure that the support and assistance the provider offers is top-notch.

  • Seek out systems that allow for customized alerts and notifications, keeping seniors and their loved ones informed.

Turning Up the Tech in Assisted Living Phoenix

In sunny Phoenix, senior living communities are jumping aboard the remote health monitoring train with enthusiasm. These systems seamlessly integrate into seniors’ daily lives, giving them a sense of independence while also providing a safety net in case of emergencies. It’s like having a helping hand that’s always there when you need it.

Looking to the Future

As the world of senior living continues to evolve, technology like remote health monitoring systems is becoming the new standard. These advancements enhance safety and well-being and promote a greater sense of autonomy and empowerment. It’s like bringing the future into the present, and it’s pretty amazing!

In conclusion, remote health monitoring systems are game-changers for independent senior living. By harnessing the power of technology, seniors can maintain their independence while staying connected to crucial health support. As the senior living Phoenix landscape continues to evolve, embracing the benefits of remote health monitoring systems will undoubtedly become a cornerstone of care within senior living communities. Skin Care Routines for Seniors to Maintain Skin Health in Hot Weather

June 26, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Maintaining skin health becomes particularly important for seniors during hot weather. High temperatures and increased sun exposure can cause various skin issues. For residents in and senior living Santa Fe NM, adopting effective skin care routines can make a significant difference in their overall well-being.

Hydration is Key

One of the most crucial aspects of maintaining healthy skin is staying hydrated. Seniors should drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep their skin hydrated from the inside out. Additionally, using hydrating moisturizers can help lock in moisture and prevent dryness. For those in senior housing Santa Fe NM, it’s essential to choose products that are suitable for their skin type and address specific concerns like sensitivity or dryness.

Sun Protection

Sun protection is vital for seniors, especially during hot weather. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 can protect the skin from harmful UV rays. It’s important to apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, can further shield the skin from sun damage. Residents in senior living Santa Fe NM should make sun protection a part of their daily routine to prevent sunburns and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Gentle Cleansing

Using a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils is essential for seniors. Harsh soaps can lead to dryness and irritation, especially in hot weather. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers that cleanse the skin without causing any damage. Washing the face twice a day with a gentle cleanser can help maintain skin health and prevent breakouts.

Moisturizing Regularly

Applying a good moisturizer is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness. Choose a moisturizer that suits the skin type and addresses specific needs, such as anti-aging for sensitive skin. Seniors in senior living Santa Fe NM should apply moisturizer immediately after showering to lock in moisture and keep their skin soft and supple.

Avoiding Excessive Heat

Seniors should avoid spending too much time in direct sunlight, especially during peak hours when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Staying indoors or in shaded areas can prevent overheating and protect the skin from sun damage. Using fans or air conditioning can help keep the living environment cool and comfortable, reducing the risk of heat-related skin issues.

Regular Skin Checks

Regular skin checks can help seniors detect any changes or abnormalities early. It’s important to look for new moles, growths, or changes in existing spots and consult a healthcare provider if any concerns arise. Residents should schedule routine skin examinations with their doctors to monitor their skin health and address any issues promptly.

By following these skin care routines, seniors can maintain healthy skin and enjoy the summer months without worrying about skin problems. Taking proactive steps to protect and nourish the skin can lead to improved overall health and well-being.

Meeting the Needs of a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

June 21, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety, especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque offers care to those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages their independence while keeping them safe.  Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. Hearing Loss Linked to Cognitive Impairment

June 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar of Santa Fe is a senior community offering assisted living residents a broad range of amenities and services.  In addition, we provide care to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Our memory care is designed around the needs of residents through Lavender Sky, MorningStar’s signature philosophy and approach to dementia care, which incorporates Montessori-based therapies to help elevate and celebrate life. Belly Fat Raises the Risk for Several Common Diseases

June 19, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Experts caution belly fat, a visceral fat that surrounds the organs, raises the risk for several common diseases. These include type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, heart attacks and heart disease as well as high cholesterol and liver disease. The journal, Circulation, explains even if your BMI is within normal range, the risks associated with heart attacks and excessive levels of belly fat are higher than normal. The Mayo Clinic defines an unhealthy level of abdominal fat in women to be a waist circumference of 35 inches or higher. For men, it is 40 inches or more.

While it can be hard to lose belly fat, research suggests a multi-faceted approach including a healthy diet and consistent exercise; along with several other lifestyle changes should help make a difference. Your diet should include lean protein from foods like beans, salmon, chicken and turkey, Greek yogurt and nuts. While carbs are always blamed for weight gain, experts explained it has more to do with the type of carbs you consume. Slowly digested, high-fiber carbs can help improve blood sugar management and lower your body’s insulin resistance. Avocado, beans, lentils, oatmeal, quinoa and chickpeas are all good sources.

Exercises should include some cardio as well as resistance training like Pilates, lifting or resistance bands. Core strengthening exercises like the plank or ab crunches are also helpful. Other lifestyle changes include managing stress and getting enough sleep each night and avoiding alcohol. If you have insurance, check to see if you are eligible for a dietitian’s services.

MorningStar of Albuquerque offers a beautiful residential setting to age in place safely and comfortably. Our assisted living provides the level of support seniors need to maintain their independence and live life to the fullest. For families struggling with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of memory loss, MorningStar provides individualized, specialized care to celebrate and elevate life.  We invite you to set up a tour to experience firsthand the finest senior living in Albuquerque, NM.

Dietary Adjustments to Help Prevent Migraines in Older Adults

June 17, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Migraines can be debilitating, especially for older adults. Proper dietary adjustments can help manage and prevent these painful episodes. For residents in senior living Phoenix incorporating specific dietary changes can make a significant difference.

Identify and Avoid Trigger Foods

Certain foods are known to trigger migraines. Common culprits include aged cheeses, processed meats, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. It’s essential to identify personal triggers and avoid them. Keeping a food diary can help track which foods might be causing migraines, allowing individuals to adjust their diets accordingly.

Incorporate Magnesium-Rich Foods

Magnesium deficiency has been linked to migraines. Including magnesium-rich foods in the diet can help prevent them. Foods such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes are excellent sources of magnesium. For residents in senior living Phoenix dining services often provide meals that include these nutritious options.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is a common migraine trigger. Ensuring adequate water intake is crucial, especially for older adults who may not feel thirsty as often. Drinking water regularly throughout the day and consuming water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can help maintain hydration levels. Senior apartments Phoenix often emphasize the importance of hydration to their residents.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol

While small amounts of caffeine can sometimes help alleviate migraine pain, excessive consumption can trigger headaches. Similarly, alcohol, particularly red wine, is a known migraine trigger. It’s best to limit or avoid these beverages to prevent migraines. Memory care Phoenix facilities often monitor and advise residents on their intake of such substances.

Eat Regular, Balanced Meals

Skipping meals can lead to a drop in blood sugar levels, which can trigger migraines. Eating regular, balanced meals helps maintain stable blood sugar levels. Meals should include a mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to provide sustained energy. Assisted living Phoenix facilities typically offer structured meal times to ensure residents eat regularly.

Incorporate Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Foods such as fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts are rich in omega-3s. Including these foods in the diet can be beneficial for migraine prevention. Senior living Phoenix communities often include omega-3 rich foods in their meal plans.

Consider a Low-Histamine Diet

Some people are sensitive to histamine, a compound found in certain foods that can trigger migraines. A low-histamine diet involves avoiding foods like aged cheeses, fermented foods, smoked meats, and certain fish. Working with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist can help determine if a low-histamine diet is appropriate and how to implement it effectively.

For older adults, dietary adjustments can play a crucial role in preventing migraines. By identifying and avoiding trigger foods, incorporating magnesium-rich and omega-3 fatty acid foods, staying hydrated, limiting caffeine and alcohol, eating regular balanced meals, and considering a low-histamine diet, seniors can manage and reduce the occurrence of migraines. These strategies can enhance the quality of life for residents, in retirement communities Phoenix.

Are You Considering a Community Setting for a Loved One With Dementia?

May 31, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about senior living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say the final decision will most likely come down to your peace of mind.

Symptoms of Depression Can Be Mistaken for Dementia

May 27, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Experts report that as people age, dementia and depression are both common conditions and may be confused with one another. Additionally, one may lead to the other as depression is linked to a higher risk for dementia, and dementia can cause depression.

The Harvard Medical School explains depression in the elderly can lead to a “phenomenon called pseudodementia—an apparent intellectual decline that stems from a lack of energy or effort.” They say individuals with this problem are often forgetful, move slowly, exhibit low motivation and signs of slowing mental prowess. If a loved one experiences these types of symptoms, their doctor may treat it with the same medications used to treat depression. As the person’s mood improves, they typically begin to function at their previous level.

Professionals share a few ways depression and dementia differ to help families and healthcare providers determine what is going on. One important difference is the time span of the decline.  A person with depression typically shows a faster decline in mental functioning than those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Also, Alzheimer’s disease causes confusion and disorientation as well as problems with short-term memory. Depression causes problems with concentration.

People suffering from depression do not have more than the usual difficulties with writing, speaking and motor skills, and are more aware of any memory problems they are experiencing. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease seem indifferent to those types of changes. However, to determine the cause of the problem, it is important to make an appointment with the person’s healthcare provider.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque provides compassionate, comprehensive care to those with memory impairment.  Residents receive 24-hour care, daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  For trusted senior living in Albuquerque, NM, please contact us to learn more.

Social Activities Can Give More Meaning to Your Life

May 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The National Institute on Aging explains that while eating healthy and exercising is important for seniors, socializing and participating in activities you enjoy can be just as beneficial. Being lonely or feeling isolated is not good for our health and well-being; and can lead to depression or anxiety, neither of which is good for our health.

Taking part in social activities can increase a person’s sense of purpose and give more meaning to their life. Whether it is starting a new hobby, renewing an old interest, or making the effort to spend more time with family or friends, being social and having an active lifestyle can benefit the mind, body and spirit.

The NIA reports on various studies that find seniors who participate in hobbies and other social activities may lower their risk for developing some health problems “including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.” A longer lifespan is linked to those who say they are satisfied with life; and other studies show staying physically active and having purpose appears to keep seniors happier and less depressed.

Experts say when seniors are happier; they are more resilient and better able to cope with life’s various challenges. More research suggests seniors who routinely participate in physical or mental activities may have fewer memory problems; while other data finds creative activities such as dancing or listening to music may help with memory problems or dementia.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, residents enjoy participating in our many activities and wellness programs. We have something for everyone and our calendar includes activities to mentally, physically, socially and spiritually stimulate and engage. Looking for Senior Living in Albuquerque?

May 24, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

As senior living provides a range of benefits such as socialization, healthcare, amenities, and convenient services, it is no surprise it has become a popular lifestyle for many older adults. If your family has already started the search for senior living in Albuquerque, you know there are many options.  This may have left you wondering how to narrow down your search to find the optimal community for yourself or a loved one?

Experts say the first thing to do is to find a home that provides the proper level of care.  If you are a senior who needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living), assisted living offers you the opportunity to maintain your sense of independence and get on with living your life to the fullest.  In addition to 24/7 care managers, access to licensed nurses, and medication management, many assisted living communities offer services including meals, onsite amenities, scheduled transportation and housekeeping.  They also often provide opportunities for learning and laughing, with social calendars full of activities, events, and educational opportunities.

For families with a loved one suffering from memory loss due to Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, start by looking at homes that have a specialized memory care area.  The community should provide a secure environment as well as programming, activities and care that meets the needs of each resident.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, we offer all of that and more.  We make it easy for your retirement years to be carefree with a full range of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities as well as a staff who feel called to serve seniors. Our beautiful community has 48 assisted living suites, with spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 21 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Early Signs of Dementia in Seniors and How to Address Them

May 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Dementia is a progressive condition that affects cognitive function, and recognizing its early signs can lead to timely intervention and management. This is particularly important for residents in environments such as assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix.

Recognizing the Early Signs

The initial symptoms of dementia can be subtle and often mistaken for normal aging. Key early signs include memory loss that disrupts daily life, difficulty in planning or solving problems, and confusion with time or place. Residents in senior living Phoenix may notice these changes during daily activities that were previously handled with ease.

Changes in Communication

Another early sign of dementia includes difficulty following or joining conversations. Individuals may struggle with vocabulary, such as calling things by the wrong name or being unable to follow or join a conversation. Engaging in regular communication exercises in settings like assisted living Phoenix can help address these issues early on.

Misplacing Items

A common early symptom is placing items in unusual places and being unable to retrace steps to find them. This can lead to accusations of theft when the individual does not remember misplacing their belongings. Facilities like memory care Phoenix are equipped with systems and practices to help residents manage their belongings and reduce the distress caused by such occurrences.

Mood and Personality Changes

Changes in mood or personality can be indicative of dementia. Individuals may become confused, suspicious, depressed, or anxious, especially in unfamiliar situations. Retirement communities Phoenix often provide mental health support and activities that help maintain a stable and supportive environment for affected individuals.

Cognitive Stimulation Activities

To address early signs of dementia, engaging in activities that stimulate the brain is beneficial. This includes puzzle-solving, memory games, and cultural activities that challenge the mind. Many senior apartments Phoenix incorporate cognitive stimulation into their daily activities, providing residents with opportunities to engage their brains and slow the progression of cognitive decline.

Personalized Care Plans

Developing a personalized care plan is crucial once early signs of dementia are identified. In environments like assisted living Phoenix, care plans are tailored to individual needs, focusing on enhancing quality of life and maintaining independence for as long as possible.

Professional Assessments

Regular assessments by healthcare professionals can help monitor the progression of dementia. Senior living Phoenix offers access to specialists who can provide ongoing assessments and adjust care plans as needed.

Support Groups and Family Involvement

Support groups can be a valuable resource for individuals and their families as they navigate the early stages of dementia. Retirement communities Phoenix often facilitate support groups where residents and their families can share experiences and coping strategies.

Addressing the early signs of dementia involves a comprehensive approach that includes recognition, cognitive stimulation, personalized care, and emotional support. By taking proactive steps, residents of assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix can manage the symptoms of dementia effectively, maintaining a better quality of life.

Millions of Older Adults Fall Each Year

May 20, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

A fall can result in serious injuries especially for those aged 65 and older, who make up most cases, and can take a long time to heal.  Many even lead to permanent mobility issues that limit the person’s freedom.  The CDC reports that each year 3 million older adults are treated in the emergency room for a fall injury and over 800,000 patients are hospitalized due to their injuries.

Experts explain there are several reasons why older adults are more vulnerable to falling and include medical conditions such as Parkinson’s and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, diabetes, and blood pressure fluctuations.  In addition, physical disabilities that affect strength and balance, poor eyesight, inner ear problems, and dehydration can also put a person more at risk for a fall.  Common situations that can result in a fall include wet or recently polished floors, poorly lit areas, rugs not properly secured, stairs, and uneven sidewalks.

There are some changes you can make to fall-proof your home such replacing light bulbs in dimly lit hallways or stairways with higher wattage bulbs.  Clean up clutter and make sure each room in your home has a clear, clean path to walk through and install grab bars and handrails where needed.  Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or shower and do not wear socks or loose, floppy slippers but rather a good walking shoe with support and cushioning.

If a loved one is unsteady on their feet, talk to their doctor about using a walker or cane.  Also, ask if any of their medications can cause dizziness or light-headedness, and if so, is there an alternative.  Doctors say if not, it is even more important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, we offer residents comfort, security, and built-in companionship. Our beautiful home has suites in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities, wellness programs, activities and care services. Our residents’ safety is important to us, and each suite is equipped with a handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. In addition, we offer SafelyYou technology, which can detect and prevent falls for memory care residents with (AI) Artificial Intelligence.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in Santa Fe, NM.
