Senior Sleep: Adjusting Your Sleep Patterns for Winter

January 29, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Winter brings shorter days and longer nights, which can affect sleep patterns, especially in seniors. For residents in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, adjusting sleep habits can be key to maintaining good health during the colder months. Here’s how seniors can adapt their sleep patterns for winter.

1. Recognize the Importance of Regular Sleep

Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is crucial for seniors, particularly those in senior living Phoenix and memory care Phoenix. As the body ages, sleep patterns can change, making it important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even during the winter.

2. Maximize Natural Light Exposure

Limited daylight in winter can disrupt the body’s internal clock. Seniors in assisted living Phoenix and retirement communities Phoenix should try to get as much natural light exposure as possible during the day to help regulate their sleep-wake cycle.

3. Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment

A comfortable and restful sleeping environment is essential. For those in senior apartments Phoenix and assisted living Phoenix, this means ensuring the bedroom is quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature. Consider using room-darkening shades and earplugs if needed.

4. Monitor Diet and Exercise

Diet and exercise have a significant impact on sleep quality. Residents in retirement communities Phoenix and senior living Phoenix should avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime. Gentle exercise, like walking or stretching, can also promote better sleep.

5. Establish a Relaxing Bedtime Routine

A relaxing routine before bed can signal to the body that it’s time to wind down. This could include reading, listening to soft music, or taking a warm bath. For those in memory care Phoenix, a consistent routine is especially helpful in promoting restful sleep.

6. Limit Naps

While short naps can be beneficial, long or late-day naps can interfere with nighttime sleep. Seniors in senior apartments Phoenix and assisted living Phoenix should aim to keep naps short and not too late in the day.

7. Seek Professional Advice if Needed

If sleep problems persist, it’s important to seek professional advice. Seniors in

senior living Phoenix, memory care Phoenix, and other senior communities should consult healthcare providers to address sleep issues effectively.

8. Stay Mindfully Connected

Social connections and mental activities can also influence sleep quality. Engaging in social activities within retirement communities Phoenix or with loved ones can help maintain a positive mood and reduce stress, leading to better sleep.

Adjusting Sleep Patterns for a Healthy Winter

For seniors in assisted living Phoenix, senior living Phoenix, retirement communities Phoenix, senior apartments Phoenix, and memory care Phoenix, adjusting sleep patterns for winter is vital for overall well-being. By establishing regular sleep routines, maximizing natural light exposure, creating a comfortable sleep environment, monitoring diet and exercise, establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, limiting naps, and seeking professional advice when necessary, seniors can achieve better sleep during the winter months. Quality sleep is a cornerstone of good health and is especially important for seniors to stay energetic and enjoy their golden years, even in the chill of winter.

Health Risks of Social Isolation and Loneliness

January 22, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

A UCSF Division of Geriatrics study found 43 percent of seniors report regularly experiencing loneliness. Mayo clinic psychologist, Dr. Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., explains why this can be a problem. He says as “social animals by nature; we tend to function better when we’re in a community setting and being around others.”

Several studies report a link between social isolation and an increased risk of disease, including one from the Academy of Science, which found loneliness can lead to higher rates of poor physical and mental health. Health concerns for isolated adults include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety and Alzheimer’s disease.

It becomes harder for seniors who live alone to socialize as they get into their upper 70s or 80s as many stop driving and/or suffer from chronic health problems affecting their mobility. Other contributing issues to loneliness in the elderly may include the death of a spouse or close family members and friends.

To emphasize how important socialization is for older adults, the American Public Health Association explains the most effective way for seniors to improve their health is to increase socialization. They report “socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise.”

At MorningStar of Santa Fe, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social wellbeing. We provide everything seniors need for quality of life and to age in place safely and comfortably. Increase Bone Strength With a Healthy Diet

January 15, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The Mayo Clinic explains our bodies constantly absorb and replace bone tissue. When a person has osteoporosis, their body is removing old bone but not keeping up with making new bone. Early warning signs of osteoporosis include bone fractures, lost height, curved back, sudden back pain and gastrointestinal problems. However, many people have no symptoms, and it isn’t until a bone fracture or a bone density test (measuring the proportion of minerals in the bones), do they learn they have osteoporosis. A step above osteoporosis is osteopenia, which affects approximately half of Americans over age 50.

It is important to work with your doctor if your bone loss has progressed to osteoporosis as there are medications that can help build stronger bones. In addition, you can help increase bone strength with a healthy diet of foods high in calcium, vitamins D and K, and protein. Foods containing calcium include dairy and soy, fish and green leafy vegetables like kale. Additionally, many foods are fortified with calcium so check labels. Protein is found in meat, fish, eggs, soy and dairy products, beans, lentils, and legumes as well as seeds and nuts. Experts recommend people over age 70 increase their uptake of vitamin D to 800 IU daily, which they can also obtain from supplements.

Consuming a lot of salt should be avoided as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports overconsumption of salt can cause the kidneys to excrete calcium. Studies indicate consuming caffeine in coffee or caffeinated drinks can additionally interfere with the body’ absorption of calcium and it is recommended older adults limit their coffee intake to no more than three cups a day. Limiting alcohol also helps maintain bone health.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living Albuquerque, NM offers.

When You Eat a Breakfast With Protein, You Stay Full and Satisfied Longer

January 10, 2024 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit.  Nutritionists say another incentive for eating protein in the morning is it may help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period.

Losing Weight Gets Harder as We Get Older

December 25, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Experts say it isn’t just our imagination that losing weight gets harder the older we become but is most likely due to having less muscle mass, which burns more calories than fat. To help, they offer easy tips on how to painlessly replace calorie-laden foods with healthier, lower-calorie substitutes. In addition to the fact that nutrient-rich foods appear to help individuals be successful in their quest to lose weight, meals do not necessarily have to be smaller than your average intake.

Dietitians suggest an easy food swap is to drink water flavored with lemon slices or sparkling water rather than sugary sodas. One study found that by replacing refined grains with whole grains it “improved blood cholesterol levels and decreased percent of body fat in postmenopausal women.” Replacing sugary granola with heart-healthy oatmeal can also help control your weight. Not only is oatmeal a good source of soluble fiber known to reduce cholesterol but it contains magnesium and potassium known to promote healthy blood pressure. Also, dietitians suggest trying sprouted grain breads, which many find tastier and healthier than even whole-grain breads.

Other ways to get healthier and lose weight is to include more plant-based foods into your diet. Make a pledge to have a couple of meatless dinners each week and get your protein from bean burgers, lentils, and quinoa instead of hamburgers and steaks. To get more veggies into your diet, top your bean burger with spinach or lettuce, tomato slices and mushrooms instead of cheese. Rather than pasta, use squash or zucchini noodles.

Help Maintain and Enhance Memory and Overall Brain Health

December 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

In an article in the US News & World Report, experts say forgetfulness is not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things we can do to help maintain and enhance our memory function and overall brain health.  Furthermore, they also benefit whole body health.

One of the first things they recommend is to never stop making “physical activity a priority as it optimizes blood flow to the entire body, including the brain.  An adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the brain helps to keep our memories sharp.”  Researchers explain that the type of exercise is also important and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio exercise such as running, power walking, biking, or swimming.  However, before beginning any new exercise regime, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

In addition, continuing to learn new things can improve our memory as studies have found a correlation between challenging our brain and maintaining brain health.  This could include activities such as playing an instrument, starting a new hobby, learning a language, or just broadening your reading habits.

Other advice that not only enhances cognitive thinking but overall health includes getting enough sleep each night.  Research has shown that “powering down on a nightly basis allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia types.”

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our goal is to be the finest senior living in Albuquerque, NM, and we work hard to provide a comfortable home and a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  We offer chef-inspired all-day dining, a range of care services, luxury amenities, and a complement of wellness programs and activities. Explore 3 Assisted Living Creative Programs in Senior Living

December 13, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Creative therapies have been proven beneficial for seniors. Suppose a loved one is struggling with completing everyday tasks or experiencing anxiety due to being overwhelmed and confused with everyday life. In that case, they may benefit from exploring creative programs and therapies designed for seniors needing assisted care.

At MorningStar Assisted Living in Sparks, NV, our creative programs developed by our Life Enrichment Teams are essential to maintaining cognitive health and quality of life for all our senior residents. Keep reading to explore three of the most popular assisted living creative programs offered in assisted living.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a very successful form of therapy for seniors as it offers a wide range of possibilities. Generally, seniors can paint, draw, complete crafts, write, and much more during art therapy. Art therapy for seniors in assisted living care enhances social skills and improves cognitive and sensory-motor functions. These abilities usually diminish as we age and our memory declines. Art therapy is a great way to combat these symptoms of memory loss in seniors.

Music Therapy

There is impressive research to back up the effectiveness of music therapy and you don’t need to be a musician to enjoy the benefits! You can find music therapy in assisted living that often looks like drum circles, listening to classical music while relaxing, or practicing an instrument. Music therapy is very relaxing for seniors in assisted care and helps them recall memories and lower anxiety.

Pet therapy

It’s hard to be discouraged when interacting with cuddly animals. Pet therapy is a great way for seniors to relax and indulge their inner child. Spending time with an animal or pet you enjoy can greatly reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. MorningStar Assisted Living offers a mix of art therapies like pet therapy and other creative activities that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit through a holistic approach.

Routine Health Screenings Are Important for Seniors

December 11, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

As we age, it is important to stay up-to-date with our health care including routine screenings as many diseases do not show signs of symptoms until the problem is harder to treat. Screenings also allow your physician to compare today’s readings to past tests to look for concerning signs. However, medical experts estimate over half of all adults over 65 are not current with the recommended screenings.

In many cases our age determines the type of screenings we should get. Some tests are recommended once a year, while others, like a colonoscopy, may be based on past test results and/or on the advice of your doctor.

Common screenings include annual cholesterol tests to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol tests can help “determine your risk for the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).” Your blood pressure should be checked each time you visit a healthcare professional, and if readings are high, it should be monitored.

Mammograms are a valuable tool to help detect breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women 50 to 74 with an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. For younger women and those with a higher risk, consult with your doctor.

Other types of screenings for seniors include annual skin checks to look for signs of skin cancer and bone density tests to check for loss of tissue and bone, which might indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Eye exams are important to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Hearing tests can help seniors get the help they need if there is a problem. Talk to your doctor about which tests they recommend for you.

MorningStar of Albuquerque is an assisted living and memory care community with a range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities designed for relaxing, stress-free retirement years. Habits That Will Make Your Senior Years Healthier

November 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

While it is true that we are all living longer, there are some steps you can take to help make those years healthier than ever.  The National Institute of Health recommends that seniors incorporate the following habits into their daily lives: eat a balanced diet; keep your mind and body active; do not smoke; get regular checkups; and practice safety habits to avoid accidents and prevent falls.

The Family Doctor website also offers some common sense advice on how even small changes in your lifestyle can improve your health even if you are already a senior.  Their primary recommendation is to add physical activity to your daily life and make changes to your diet.

By increasing your daily physical activity, it will help improve the strength of your bones and muscles.  In addition, we know that stronger muscles can help to prevent falls, and if you do experience a fall, those stronger bones are less apt to break.  By daily exercising, you can also help improve many chronic health problems such as diabetes.

Seniors new to exercising should consult their health care provider before they begin.  Once they are given the go ahead, they need to start slowly.  Walking is one of the easiest exercises to do and experts suggest breaking up 30 minutes of daily activity into increments if it is easier for you.  Consider walking for 15 minutes twice a day or doing 10 minutes 3 times a day.   Strength training also offers seniors benefits but again the suggestion is to begin slowly.  Start with 1 or 5-pound weights and do a few exercises at a time.  Resistance bands are also easy to use and can help to strengthen upper arms and leg muscles.

The article also suggests making changes to your diet. Try making small changes one at a time that add up to improved health.  Adding more fiber to your meals gets your colon working better and reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. A heart healthy diet to try is the Mediterranean diet which promotes foods such as fish, fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Lastly, they recommend you drink more water and eat more whole foods.

At MorningStar of Albuquerque, our community is designed to promote residents’ independence with a range of senior care and hospitality services, resort-style amenities, and wellness programs and activities. Helping Your Elderly Parents Organize Their Important Documents

November 13, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

In the event of a medical emergency or illness, to file income taxes, or apply for state or federal benefits, experts say it is helpful and maybe even lifesaving for seniors to have their paperwork in order. Important documents to have available to a family member or trusted friend include property deeds, history of financial income and medical information. For example, Stuart Furman, A Place for Mom legal expert and elder attorney, explains if your parents are eligible to apply for veterans’ benefits or Medicaid, they will need proof of past income and financial resources.

If you are the designated person, start by helping your parents compile a record of their bank accounts as well as sources of financial income including pensions, 401(k) information, and annuity contracts. In addition, help them organize information regarding savings bonds, stock certificates, or brokerage accounts. File these documents along with all property deeds and titles to vehicles in a home safe where they are secure. Files should also include several years of income taxes as well as a list of credit cards and outstanding loans or debts owed to them.

If your parents have a living will and/or a durable power of attorney, you should have a copy as it is important in the case of a medical emergency to be able to quickly get your hands on such documents. Other things medical professionals say are important to get your hands on quickly is a list of medications your parents are taking, their medical history and insurance cards. Muscle Loss in Older Adults

November 13, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings on problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn, can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes.  The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist with Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started.  Klein explains, "The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss."

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

Learn More about Drug Recalls

November 06, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

We all applaud the numerous life-saving medications that help many people enjoy a higher quality of life than they may have experienced without these wonder drugs. In the US, the FDA is in charge of approving the medications that come to market in our country and ensuring they are safe and effective.

While each new prescription drug is carefully looked at by the experts at the FDA before it is granted approval, over the last ten years statistics show there were more than 14,000 drugs recalled. This adds up to an average of four recalls a day.

Experts say although the numbers sound alarming, in most cases, the FDA is aware of any side effects and risks the drug has before it is made available to the public. According to an article from the Harvard Medical School, there are several explanations as to why things are missed after approval, and a drug is deemed unsafe and recalled.

The most likely reason is drug clinical trials are typically done with at most a couple of thousand people. After a drug is widely used by tens of thousands, rare reactions may turn up. Another thing is that clinical trial participants are generally healthy in order to produce better trial results. Once the general public is using the drug, it may not work like it did during trials. Problems can also crop up because people are using other drugs as well.

Other complications resulting in a drug being recalled include poor manufacturing processes including bacterial contamination or problems with mislabeling and storage. In some cases, incidences of recalls are due to manufacturers adding additional drugs that were never in the original medication.

Thankfully most recalls are not life-threatening or dangerous to the user. Only 6 percent of recalls are Class I. This is where the drug is deemed dangerous and poses a serious health risk. The majority of recalls fall into the Class II category where a drug may present a less serious health risk or a temporary one. Many times it is a matter of a drug being improperly stored such as a too hot location.

To safeguard yourself, you can sign up for texts or emails from the FDA regarding safety alerts and recalls on drugs. Additionally pharmacists advise patients to carefully examine their new prescription for the correct color and broken or crumbling pills. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns regarding your medications.

How to Plan the Perfect Birthday Celebration for Loved Ones in Senior Living

October 23, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

There are some things in life that have no age limit, and birthday parties are one of them.

Birthday celebrations are enjoyable for people of all ages. For older adults, they’re also a great way to spend quality time with loved ones and make wonderful memories. If you have a loved one in senior living with a birthday coming up, here are a few tips for helping them make the most of their big day.

Talk to the Staff Beforehand

Not all senior living communities in Phoenix do things the same way. Before you begin planning the party, speak with a staff member to see if the facility has any rules or restrictions regarding parties. They can give you advice on how to throw the best birthday soiree possible and even offer suggestions for possible venues, activities, and more.

Pick the Perfect Spot

There are many different types of senior living communities, and the type of facility your loved one lives in will play a big part in your planning.

For example, some facilities are like apartment complexes, giving you the option to hold the party in a communal space or within your loved one’s residential unit. If they live in a community with individual homes or condos, you may also be able to hold the party in an outdoor space.

Invite Friends and Family

The guests are the most important part of any birthday celebration. Make it a point to invite your loved one’s close friends and relatives so they’ll be surrounded by people who care for them. Many residents of senior living are close with their neighbors, as well, so you can also invite fellow residents to get in on the fun.

Work With Nearby Companies

Senior living communities are often situated near restaurants, stores, and other businesses. These businesses can be the perfect places to find catered food, party decorations, and personalized confections. With their help, you can throw a party that suits your loved one’s unique personality while supporting the larger community.

Curate Fun Activities

Lastly, consider the kinds of activities you’ll offer your guests.

How will you keep everyone entertained and ensure that they have a good time? There’s no wrong answer here — your activity list might include board games, movies, karaoke, or other fun pastimes. Just remember to keep the focus on the honoree by choosing activities that interest them.

Celebrating Another Year in Senior Living

Planning a birthday get-together in senior living doesn’t have to be stressful. By working with staff members, friends, and local businesses, you can create the perfect celebration to honor your loved one on the day of their birth.

From choosing fun activities to a comfortable spot, there are many ways to have a party your family won’t soon forget!

Substituting Lower Calorie Foods Can Help You Lose Weight

October 20, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

Finding a Gift for a Loved One with Memory Impairment

October 18, 2023 by MS Arcadia in Senior Living

If you want to get something special for mom or dad or another loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, it can be challenging to figure out a good gift. This is where the Internet can lend a hand with a range of items designed to enhance your loved one’s quality of life.

Dementia care specialists say it can take a little more time and some creativity but there are many great gift ideas. One idea is personalized gifts or memory-filled ones. A photo album filled with pictures of the person surrounded by people important to them, or a picture book from a place they loved to visit. A coffee mug personalized with a photo or a cozy throw filled with favorite family pictures are also good ideas.

Music from their younger years, show tunes and old movies are sure to make them smile and can be a good way to spend an afternoon together enjoying their new gifts. Coloring books filled with pictures of things they love such as animals or flowers, and a set of new markers or crayons, and easy-to-do crafts are also fun to do together.

Another item targeted to people with Alzheimer’s or dementia is therapy stuffed animals.  Designed to meet their special needs, one example is a teddy bear that comes with a few classic songs but has room to load a person’s favorite tunes (up to a 1,000 songs). Cuddly robotic cat and dog stuffed animals have a calming, soothing effect on people in the middle and later stages of Alzheimer's disease. Research shows they can help the person remember a time in their life when their purpose included caring for others.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Albuquerque provides compassionate and loving care to those suffering from memory impairment. The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents, allowing them as much independence as possible.   Our specially-trained care team understands that the essence of the person still exists despite the memory loss, and will strive every day to connect with and nurture that essence.
